Upgrading RAM
I currently have 1 8GB stick of RAM in my computer that was purchased 2 years ago. I need to upgrade to 16GB - I’m regularly hitting over 85% usage. I was told that even if I purchase the exact same brand, there’s a high likelihood that it won’t be the same as brands often change manufacturers or th...

Re: Does LM come w/ a firewall enabled by default?
...'sudo apt-get install gfw' to instal the firewall GUI ... Shouldn't that be gufw? I was going to suggets that anyway, and the default rules are fine for most non non server users. And re the OP, no it's not turned on by default, and unlike Windows you don't have to be completely nbuts to not use...

Does LM come w/ a firewall enabled by default?
Hello,
Title pretty much sums it up. I’m curious if LM 19.3 and 20 each have a built in firewall and if it’s enabled by default or not. It doesn’t act like it does, which is why I’m wondering, either way. If so, what are the default settings for media servers and the like?
Thanks so much in advance!

Re: Please Help! Software updater froze while installing updated pkgs/kernel
In looking that over, the odd thing is that I didn’t even install some of that stuff. The Gnome/Snap, I never did that. Don’t even understand how it came to be. Yes, there seems to be issues with the Snaps. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have installed that way but there was no data on it back when I ...

Please Help! Software updater froze while installing updated pkgs/kernel
Hello, I’m stuck and not sure what to do.As the title says, I was simply applying the routine updates that came up within the package/software update manager of LM 19.3 (this is not the version update to LM20) and it had some updates to the kernel that needed to be installed. So, I went through the ...

Need help finishing up VNC setup on Linux Mint
Hello, I’m trying to setup a VNC server so that I can access my Linux Mint machine via Jump and Screens on iOS. Both work with standard VNC but I need to have it running. Thus far, I have installed TightVNC and have established a password and checked that it’s successfully running. It’s vncservernam...

True PDF Editor on Linux?
Hello, I used to run Linux Mint and ended up having to go back to Windows a few years back for compatibility reasons. I miss the experience and I'm wondering if it may be feasible to switch back to Mint at this point. I can find most of the things that I need to be able to do with the exception of t...

Re: I have been a new user for 5 days.....
Yes, usually I don't have problems with the links showing up in the menus if I install from the repos. Occasionally, it will take a few minutes for it to show up, once (if I remember correctly) it was after I restarted. So I'd think the "reload plugins" fix posted by psyc1610 might work. I...

Re: Separate data partition
I'm no expert but I can share how I have my laptop setup. I have six partitions (well, seven if you included the extended container partition): Win2k Linux Mint Second Linux Distro (currently Mint 5) Home Shared Data Swap So, it's relatively self-explanatory how I use it. I mount /home for each of t...

Re: Installing Ubuntu after Mint on a triple boot
Yes, that setup is relatively standard, however, there's something to keep in mind. You can setup /home to be on the same /home partition as Mint but remember *don't* choose to have the partition manager format the /home partition. Also, it's generally not a great idea to share the same /home/userna...

Re: Synaptic question
OK, one more thing I just found... I don't understand why this is but I realized that I had been using the quick search function and I hadn't seen that in previous versions of Synaptic (probably was there but not on my toolbar). Quick search didn't find any of those additional packages BUT I just tr...

Re: Hard drive question/load cycle count
SATA? Okay, but then its SATA1 or SATA2? Too bad you're not talking about a SAS drive. I've always wondered how fast one of these really is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822116081 As far as 5400-vs-7200 on SATA goes, we'll assume you can handle a 3.0mb/s SATA2 and life is g...

Re: Synaptic question
Thanks for the replies. I understand that Synaptic is a front end for apt, that's my problem. The new content of repositories aren't showing up in Synaptic. Thanks for double checking but I've refreshed about 15 times, literally. I added content from yet another 3rd party server and, even after refr...

Re: [SOLVED] Amarok 2
Hi, I'm glad it worked. By the way, it's really a shame that amarok2 packages have been named "amarok-kde4" , it's not very user friendly. Take care. Jean. I totally agree. However, I was looking for the amarok-kde4 packages which never did show up in Synaptic. Go figure...still don't und...

I'm 99% sure it's SATA and I'm also embarrassed to say that I think it's actually 120gb. I guess I filled it faster than I thought!
