Re: [solved] mintupdate as stand alone install

As mintupdate will not even launch in ssh session without sudo I came across a way to get mintupdate to launch via sudo in the x11 forward session so that the install updates will not fail due to permissions. Seems to work fine despite your warning. BTW UsePAM is set to yes for my sshd So ssh to the...

Re: [solved] mintupdate as stand alone install

@gm10 you mentioned setting up a arm64 test system. Here is my recommendation. https://store.pine64.org/?product=rock64-media-board-computer Pine64 regular rockchip64, plus case and 16gb emmc plus usb/emmc adaptor using ayufan bionic image. https://store.pine64.org/?product=rock64-media-board-comput...

Re: [solved] mintupdate as stand alone install

Rats.... I found an x11forwarding show stopper issue. I started as sudo via x11forwarding When I go to try install the updates it fails and the terminal says Exception in thread Thread-1: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python3.6/threading.py", line 916, in _bootstrap_inner self.ru...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

gm10, 1. yes disabling notification via remote-desktop allowed x11forwarding launch to work!!! 2 I always wondered how mintupdate "bundled" the packages that needed updating (one thing that made aptitude pretty unusable) So now when I see a "bogus" package (one I did not install) I can look to see i...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

The crash happens because your desktop environment does not appear to have a notification service installed, guess I wasn't handling that situation (will be fixed next release). 1. As a workaround, manually disable notifications like this: dconf write /com/linuxmint/updates/show-desktop-notificatio...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

I got my nomachine remote desktop server running and entered the remote machine that way and then launched mintupdate. It seems to be running fine. It shows lots dependent packages (e.g. libs) but I assume it cause this wasn't a standard mint install. So looking at this instance and the one via x11 ...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

As I looked closer I realized that despite starting on the remote machine it was picking packages to update from my local machine! Pretty obvious because I knew some of them were definitely not installed on the remote machine Not sure how that could happen? I thought only the x11 rendering happens o...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

@gm10 ok that deb file worked I watched anxiously as mintupdate was installing expecting another issue but NO! fired it up and .... the application window appears and is populated but it looks like it never comes back from loading (watch icon, menu and packages window are greyed out) Not much on the...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/di ... ary-arm64/

this shows no packages so maybe there just no universe/multiverse backports of anything for arm64.

I wonder if someone has a ppa or such of back-ports.

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

ok getting closer The install reports mintupdate : Depends: init-system-helpers (>= 1.52) but 1.51 is to be installed looks like the arm64 ports has an older version. Will that work? Hope this isn't a rabbit hole of dependencies not ported to arm64. ~$ apt policy init-system-helpers init-system-help...

Re: mintupdate as stand alone install

So instead I put up another PPA just for this, see if it works and let me know: https://launchpad.net/~gm10/+archive/ubuntu/linuxmint-tools-arm64. After loading and updating the ppa none of those packages in ppa including mintupdate are available. Hit:13 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gm10/linuxmint-tool...

[solved] mintupdate as stand alone install

I have some sbc's (arm32 and arm64) that I have a minimal gnome install on top of 18.04 along with enabling x11 forwarding. This allows me to install/run a few useful gui applications on an otherwise "headless" machine which I can start over ssh (e.g. gparted, nemo3) One management application in mi...

Re: Alternative to Gnome Schedule? (Solved)

Tired to compile from source in 18.04, no luck missing too many pieces.

But the .deb file above works in 18.04/19.1!! Locations slightly different

Code: Select all

Icon=/usr/local/share/pixmaps/gnome-schedule/gnome-schedule.svg
Exec=/usr/local/bin/gnome-schedule

Re: How to Add a `Paste Link Here` Nemo Action

most definitely. Maybe I'll just make a github repo and you can embed, fork or reference that.

I probably end up making a few improvements and some error checking like checking to make sure the clipboard is holding a valid file/directory to link and the paste target is also a valid directory.

Re: How to Add a `Paste Link Here` Nemo Action

Here is code of two bash scripts called by the two nemo actions see github repo https://github.com/dkebler/paste-link-here copies the currently selected file or directory path to the clipboard #!/bin/bash LINK_DIR=$(dirname $1) #echo The Link Path- $1 - was sent to clipboard > $LINK_DIR/link.log ech...

Re: [SOLVED] Creating shortcuts

Came up with a couple nemo actions and bash scripts that adds 'Link to Clipboard' and 'Paste Link Here' now it's simple to make links from one directory to another quickly (no having to move them and remove 'Link to')

How to Add a `Paste Link Here` Nemo Action

TLDR; requirements: must install xclip and xdotool, sudo apt install xclip xdotool 1. Download and extract latest release https://github.com/dkebler/paste-link-here/releases into ~/.local/share/nemo/actions . 2. Make sure the two bash scripts (.sh) have executable permissions. 3. In Nemo select a f...

Never saw the "attached" patch file so just did this instead followed that link to github repo and then loaded the entire raw cinnamon-desktop-editor.py into browser copy and pasted that into a file onto my desktop cinnamon-desktop-editor-fix.py now made an insurance copy of the original and then co...

Re: 19.1 Bug? nemo launcher fails from desktop confext menu and from command line

not to be rude but couldn't have been an announcement made about something as big as this being broken? so in the meantime how are we suppose to create launchers / shortcuts? see my note above. right click on any launcher in panel and click +add. You'll at least get a new launcher in the panel whic...
