Re: How to solve a silly mistake .... (nVidia driver)

@WharfRat: Thank you for those suggestions. I am not familiar with the first, but if you could detail how to go about doing that I would certainly like to give it a try for educational purposes if nothing else. If that doesn't work, then I will go to suggestion #2. You are correct; it is a brand new...

How to solve a silly mistake .... (nVidia driver)

I have just installed 64Bit Mint 18.2 alongside 32Bit 18.1. No big deal here. It installed perfectly and booted up as it should. But the video driver did not recognise the monitor (as it normally doesn't it seems) and I was only able to view a distorted incorrect resolution on the display. Having ha...

<SOLVED> Two different Linux versions on same drive

I am running a 64Bit Motherboard on my desktop PC. For some reason, until now 32Bit versions of Linux (Ubuntu and then later, Mint) have been installed on this PC for years. Currently Mint MATE 18.1 32Bit is installed and running on this drive. My question is, can I install Mint MATE 18.2 64Bit on t...

Re: VPN

I have been using Witopia VPN for a long time now. It is generally reliable, has many servers, and has served me well on frequent world travelling, even in China (requires a special DNS which is supplied on request). Witopia VPN is NOT free. I have found IPSec to be a very secure protocol, although ...

Re: 17.3 MATE inappropriate display resolution

GlennD: Thank you for the response. Yes the driver selected is -304. The reason for that was because in Mint 18.1 which I now have running but cannot use (the VPN problem), the method was to install an nvidia legacy driver which -304 is. But unfortunately, there is no nvidia-xorg-legacy available fo...

Re: 17.3 MATE inappropriate display resolution

This is very confusing, Yesterday, after installing nvidia-340 driver as you suggested using the method you suggested, bootup resulted in a black screen with everything hung. I went back to Grub and edited the script for Mint 17.3 by adding nomodeset and things booted just fine. This morning, first ...

Re: 17.3 MATE inappropriate display resolution

I followed the advice to install nvidia-340 from the ppa repository as suggested. Still no nvidia driver is installed. The only difference between running with the -304 driver and the -340 driver is that with the -340 driver it boots into a black screen and hangs. It did not when using -304 even the...

Re: 17.3 MATE inappropriate display resolution

64-bit, eh? This machine was sold to me at the outset as a 32-bit machine. I have never queried it and it has operated as a 32-bit system ever since. Perhaps at the next upgrade I will try 64-bit. Thank you. With regard to driver version =304 or =340; I have installed both a various times with absol...

<SOLVED> 17.3 MATE inappropriate display resolution

This issue is part one of a two part issue. After a long process, problems with xserver, nvidia settings, and other issues, were solved. (See https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=246039&start=40#p1322568 ). But a second problem has arisen forcing me to revert, on a separate HDD,...

<SOLVED> Finally; I have to admit defeat.

It is finally SOLVED! Firstly, I upgraded to Mint 18.1. I could only boot to the Live DVD by editing "nomodeset" into the boot GRUB menu. The MATE version of 18.1 was installed. But still I needed the nomodeset option to get to the sign in screen. I then installed xserver-xorg-legacy from ...

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

I now have an old card which has run without problems previously. I have installed nVidia 304 from both Driver Manager and then again over the top of it from Synaptic. (Same version). This driver was running before the problems. The same kernel is running as was running before the problems, 3.131.0-...

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

I have changed the GPU back to an old GeForce unit, installed Nouveau drivers from Drivers Manager, and absolutely nothing has changed except that I can now boot into a 1280x1024 resolution without doing anything. Still not a patch on the 1920x1024 I had before this trouble. I am still in Mint 17.3....

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

Well; where do we go from here? Everything suggested implemented, and the final result after it all is exactly the same as it was before we started. nVidia drivers say they install, but apparently they don't. nVidia drivers when purged say they are purged, but nothing changes. Nouveau when installed...

lmintnewb2: Thanks for the thoughts. Unfortunately this ASUS motherboard provides no graphics output port. It seems that no graphics card, no monitor connection.

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

lmintnewb2: Thank you for your suggestion. The Motherboard in my old system has no specific in-built graphics function. Does this preclude simply removing the graphics card, or would the system handle graphics output without a dedicated card? If that would work, how would I incorporate such a change...

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

Phd21: I worked out that to boot to Advanced Options one needs to hold down the Shift key during the actual boot. This I have done and Mint 17.3 not only wants to boot to the incorrect kernel, but I can get no "Advanced Options". To check that what I was doing was what you wanted, I then t...

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

Thom_A: Thanks for the reply. I thought I had the oldest computer. But you take the prize. And yes; I was also under the impression that Linux had a better chance at running well on older machines than that other OS. But in the event, it is the other OS which is operating well, albeit not with every...

Re: Finally; I have to admit defeat.

Phd21: Before I go down this road, whilst digging around a few minutes ago, I came across a file in the folder /etc/modprobe.d called disable-nouveau.conf Maybe this is why nouveau keeps showing up as failed. Should I do anything about that? Then, at the risk of sounding a real newbie, how exactly d...
