Re: Window manager broken after last update

I might be wrong, but this may have affected a lot of people who wouldn't know how to boot into a command prompt. In the past Linux Mint has been something people can use without being aware of the operating system. It was impressive how quickly the problem was solved but shouldn't something be post...

Re: Window manager broken after last update

I have two PCs running Linux Mint 19.1. Both developed this problem over the last 24 hours after a mint update. The way I solved the problem was to downgrade the window manager, xfwm4, as follows: $ sudo apt-get install xfwm4=4.12.5-1ubuntu0.18.04.1 It was difficult to do because the menu's had disa...

Re: vboxclient the virtualbox kernel service is not running

I had this problem with LM 17.2 with xfce. The standard mint updates upgraded part of VirtualBox to version 5 and I started to get the message about the "vboxclient kernel not running". I noticed that there will some bits of VirtualBox still on version 4.3. My Windoze XP VM wouldn't run any more. To...

Re: why dash (rather than bash)

It might be worth looking at this - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DashAsBinSh. I'm a newbie and only discovered about the differences this morning. I'm off to find a wooden leg to stick out of my window!

Re: [solved]Problems after removing 2nd distro

I had the same problem with Mint17.1 and xfce. I did the grub-install and update-grub without sucess. I was still geting Grub rescue on booting, having to change the settings and run normal after each re-boot. Installing Boot-Repair https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair did the job straight ...

Re: Linux Cinnamon 17 - VLC won't disable screensaver

I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 with xfce (Ubuntu 14.04) and had a problem with XScreenSaver interrupting my videos. I tried Caffiene from the developers and it worked straight away: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:caffeine-developers/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install caffeine After that, you jus...

Re: [WORKAROUND] Shares not mounting at startup.

Hi - this post worked for me - http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=144997. At the moment my passwords are in the /etc/auto.sambashares file. I'll do the rest of the hack when I get a "round tuit".

Why did 'apt-get autoremove' wreck my system!

After upgrading from XP a couple of months ago I thought I was doing quite well with making things work. Yesterday, whilst playing with Audacity, PulseAudio and ALSA, I innocently ran the command 'sudo apt-get autoremove' . Without looking too carefully i gleefully accepted the recovery of disk spac...

Re: Which do you prefer: Cinnamon or XFCE?

Tried both but have ended up with XFCE on both headless server and desktop. Laptop still on Windoze XP so it will probably have a clean 17+xfce installed on it.

I particularly like the way multiple workspaces work in xfce.

Re: Total GUI hang (except mouse), what?

I have the same problem with Linux Mint 17 and Cinnamon 2.2. Just a few times in the last four weeks. This morning it happened as I clicked a youtube video running in FireFox to pause it. Mouse cursor moved but PC didn't respond to clicks or key-presses other than [Ctrl][Alt][Backspace] which took m...

Re: Vino VNC broken with Cinnamon 1204 RC

I have a similar problem. After some research, I found this: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=564520 I am a newbie and have no idea what to do with the information. I believe that Cinnamon is based on Gnome. Should I post it as a bug in Cinnamon? So far, my reaction is "Forking hell!"
