Re: Why I'd Rather Use Windows 8 instead of Linux

I just wanted to clarify my earlier post - I can only speak for myself when I say I've faced no hostility from anyone in the open source community. I tend to stay away from online forums where there's a lot of obvious hostility, so that probably helps explain why I haven't faced any problems myself....

Re: Introducing Linux Mint to my School District

Welcome to the forums and well done on introducing open source software to your school district. I wish more public institutions would do the same. :)

Re: Why I'd Rather Use Windows 8 instead of Linux

I've seen that article before. He sounds like a typical Microsoft shill. I wonder how much he gets paid for writing that garbage. I particularly don't like the way he insults the entire open source community in that article. Since I've been involved with the Linux and open source community, I've bee...

Re: The Cinnamon desktop is very laggy for me (LM17)

Sorry for the delay in replying. Tonight I installed LM17.1 Cinnamon edition on a live DVD to try it out, and to my surprise, it worked perfectly! :D So the problem must have been something to do with Virtual Box. I've now installed the Cinnamon desktop on my main Linux Mint installation and it's wo...

Re: The Cinnamon desktop is very laggy for me (LM17)

Thanks, eventually I did manage to get the guest additions installed by mounting the CD-ROM via the terminal. However, it still hasn't fixed the lagginess even though I rebooted the virtual machine. Does this mean I'm out of luck with regards to using the Cinnamon desktop?

Re: The Cinnamon desktop is very laggy for me (LM17)

I've also tried running sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms and it just says virtualbox-guest-dkms is already the newest version, so I guess this means the guest additions are already installed?

Re: The Cinnamon desktop is very laggy for me (LM17)

How can I verify if the guest additions are installed? I wasn't sure, so I tried going to the Devices -> Insert Guest Additions CD Image menu item, but the following error message appeared. ErrorScreenshot.png When I go to Devices -> CD/DVD Devices I can see that VBoxGuestAdditions.iso has a checkma...

Re: The Cinnamon desktop is very laggy for me (LM17)

Thanks. Unfortunately, even though I increased the VM's system memory from 1GB to 3GB, I'm still having the same issues. I also increased the amount of video memory but even that hasn't helped. It doesn't feel as if increasing the RAM and video memory has had any effect at all. :( Does anyone have a...

The Cinnamon desktop is very laggy for me (LM17)

I use MATE as my desktop for my main Linux Mint 17 installation, but I wanted to try out the Cinnamon desktop, so I installed it in VirtualBox. (I have a separate Linux Mint 17 installation in VirtualBox where I can experiment with things without the fear of breaking my main operating system). Cinna...

There is a Linux clone of Notepad++ called Notepadqq. It doesn't seem to have plugins like the Windows Notepad++ though.

Re: Can't setup Chromecast (Mint 17).

I know this post is now a few months old, but I bought a Google Chromecast this morning and I just wanted to explain how I managed to get it working with Linux Mint. I completed the setup process on my (Android) phone - when you go to chromecast.com/setup it asks you to install the Chromecast app. W...

Re: What's this about bash?

Thanks all, I've got the fix for the bash vulnerability. I didn't realise until today that you have to manually check for updates and apply them - I stupidly assumed that they would be applied automatically (like Windows updates)! I've only been using Linux Mint on this computer for about 3 weeks th...

[SOLVED] Trouble installing drivers for Canon Pixma MG5450S

I'm trying to get my printer drivers set up but I'm having problems. I followed the advice in this thread: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=172255&hilit=mg5450 but I'm stuck at this step: "if it stops and asks for a file called libtiff4 .................. get it from here ftp://ftp.u...

Re: What mobile operating system do you use?

I assume that by "mobile" you mean cell phone OS, right? And not mobile as in tablet, or laptop computers, which are mobile compared to a desktop system. If that's the case, then, my phone is not a smart phone, so it runs whatever OS Samsung built into it. Yes that's right, I'm talking about cell p...

Thanks for your reply. I'm interested in supporting the work they do, for example the ongoing development of Linux and protecting against threats from proprietary software companies. I'm also happy to donate to Linux Mint, of course! :)

What mobile operating system do you use?

I was just curious to see which mobile operating systems are most popular amongst Linux Mint users. ( f you currently use more than one, vote for your favourite). I originally assumed it would be Android (since it's based on the Linux kernel), but I know a few Linux desktop users who use iOS instead...

Linux Foundation/Free Software Foundation

Is anyone here a member of the Linux Foundation or the Free Software Foundation? If so, do you find it useful? I'm considering joining one or the other.

I'm currently studying the Introduction to Linux course on the edX website, which was created by the Linux Foundation.
