Re: Why I'd Rather Use Windows 8 instead of Linux

@slayde, the software apps you mentioned run as well under Windows, so therein is no conclusive argument. Linux Mint Forum is a bit friendlier than most and so is Zorin Forums. Some Linux forums are so unfriendly that I will never set foot there again, ever. They even had me off using Linux altogeth...

Re: Will I need a graphics card?

@M Wood Retaining the Windows partitions are done for warranty purposes. Dell South Africa does not offer support for Linux systems and it would be easy to stick in the Windows system should any hardware fail and they need to problem shoot. All the systems we are looking at either ship with 8GB or 1...

Re: Laptop cooler ? After a few days' testing, the results

1. In the past, my laptop would heat up to 95 degrees Celcius when using Chrome, then it would shut down. Now, it usually does not exceed 80 degrees and, as I am writing here in Chrome, temp is indicated as 70 degrees Celcius. 2. I have run a number of full system recursive scans with Clamtk just t...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

@frodopogo Thank you for your most interesting post and your well-honed eloquence. You managed to post a very entertaining essay that I enjoy reading more than once, which is why my response comes at this day, many weeks later. Updates, as the world of Mac had taught me through tribulation, are dang...

Re: Will I need a graphics card?

I can't speak on whether a video card will help, but if you are editing very large RAW images in GIMP, I'm told that adding an SSD to your system for use as a "scratch disk" is very helpful. I don't know much more than that -- one of my friends was telling me about it the other day -- but seek at t...

Re: Is Linux Secure or Vulnerable?

Most routers already provide a hardware firewall that is far better and basically makes redundant a software firewall. Kudo's to you, caf4926, for your spot-on wisdom here. Once again, the superior intellect of the Linuxian shines through, as so correctly termed by the cyber sage Wywerjet. I tested...

Re: Will I need a graphics card?

Thanks for the advice and links, DrHu & richyrich :)

It seems therefore that an i5 2.6GHz Haswell CPU with HD4400 or 4600 should be doing the job well enough. It also then means that a Macbook with irisPro will be overkill. IrisPro >HD5200.

Re: Is Linux Secure or Vulnerable?

So, assuming equal levels of user competence, Linux without AV is safer than Windows with AV . I have many years, and many customers' experiences, behind that statement. You may all take my word for it. M Wood, thanks for the complement. On anti-malware, we are on the same page. Interestingly...

Will I need a graphics card?

Hi My small family are all interested in art and photography. We are considering to purchase a good DSLR that also has excellent video capability. We are using Xara Xtreme, Inkscape and GIMP. On an i5 Haswell CPU and LM 17.1 Cinnamon edition, will we need discreet graphics or will the Intel HD 4000/...

by the time that NoScript and LastPass are installed, kiss your computer goodbye and use it as a doorstop. Please elaborate. Do you mean there are security issues with them, or that they add a lot of overhead? Why should I trust a stranger with my passwords and usernames? NoScript requires more tec...

Re: Is Linux Secure or Vulnerable?

My son's 41 times infected Mac deserves attention here. His system has been infected more times by one single virus type than there are virii for Mac in total. Bitdefender could identify but not remove, ClamAV never even saw what was transpiring. It was much worse than any Windows or MS-DOS infectio...

Re: ClamAV doesn't detect TAR-files?

Perhaps some day you will realise that ClamAV is a rather useless tool as it had scored very badly in AV test labs, then also because no Linux AV ever picked up any of the Shellshock aka BashBug nasties, Heartbleed, etc. If people realised these existed, it would have been documented in definition l...

I'n not into casting spells and exorcising demons. :!: But I was referring to spell checker in MS Word. That coins it. Re: Is Linux Secure or Vulnerable?

Dear Linus & M Wood, Hi there! 1) Clam AV is awarded a lower grade, but at user level may suffice with all the precautions afore discussed! We have a Linux BitDefender Scanner for Linux which comes as a Deb. package. How can one update a pirated AV(CommonSense) is the question uppermost :? ! 2) Secu...

Re: Is Linux Secure or Vulnerable?

At the other end of the scale, the guru user will probably never get an infection on a Windows box. But he'll still need to be more vigilant than he would with Linux. I could be that Windows guru you are referring to. A tad optimistic, perhaps, but I do get your point. my point is that there most l...

Re: Laptop cooler ? Some practical experience

Every laptop cooler I have seen is USB powered. This can drain the battery quickly. It can also add more heat into the laptop due to added power being used. I have found that my tethered phone adds to the heat inside the notebook, yes. I always operate my notebook on mains power regardless, as this...

Re: Macbook Retina 11.1 LMDE boot

Hi folks, I want to install LMDE on a macbook 13inch retina 11,1. I boot LMDE from a usb stick and grub page shows up, after that it gets stuck with following message "no controller found" and it's totally hanged. Nothing works unless you hold the power off button. It's the same thing with recovery...

Thanks for those valuable hints. I generally use Chrome, but dabble with Firefox. ) Chrome, despite being from Google, is a much more secure browser than most, that can handle multiple instances each sandboxed into its own "virtual machine" process. It seemingly is the same virtue that requires mor...
