Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

It's the same old misconception people have about freedom of speech. You have the right to speak your mind, but I'm not obligated to listen to it and I don't have to put up with you saying whatever you like in my house. I can ask you to leave. In a similar vein, Linux DOES give you the choice, but ...

Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

It isn't Mint's code that does that, it is from Ubuntu or possibly Debian
Good point. Perhaps I should argue with them. But the last program I had to fix was called mintinstall, which seems to be mint.

Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

I'm not denying you anything. In fact, I don't care one bloody bit what you do. That's the part that isn't actually true, at least when it comes to Mint code. There are people who are actively trying to thwart my attempts to run as root by adding code to deliberately make things not work as r...

Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

Running your Linux desktop as root is not a sin, no. It's just plain dumb. Which qualification can count as the understatement of the year, but let's stick to it for the sake of civility. Explain why it's dumb in the context of having good backups. And explain why it's so dumb that you have to go o...

Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

The solution to safety running as root is good backups. I've had a daily snapshotting utility for years but Mint now comes with Timeshift so if you screw up you can walk it back to where it was. Any time I do something that I know is a little dangerous I always do a quick backup to make sure. And wi...

Running as Root is not a Sin

mintinstall The software manager should not be run as root. Please run it in user mode. I'm really frustrated with nanny mode in Linux. After all, Linux is about freedom and being root is about freedom and my computer my choice. Besides mintinstall runs as root or it wouldn't work so confused? Reall...

I'm hardly a noob. Been running Linux servers since 1996 and programming since 1979. I just don't need a net.

[SOLVED] Update Manager can't see 18.3 ???

Running 18.2 and I go into the update manager and it doesn't see 18.3. It's not an option under Edit.

But - I was running 18.1 in a virtualbox and its update manager did see 18.3 and upgraded just fine. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Resetting Video Install

I copied a Linux Mint Mate system from my desktop to my laptop. The desktop was nvidia but the laptop was ati. So I get an error loading xwindows. Although it won't boot up into the gui, I can run "lightdm" from the command line and it works. And if I boot off the install cd it also works. So what I...

Kernel not fully installed

I'm new to the mint world and more used to yum than apt. I have a boot problem now because of a screwed up kernel install. Here's what's happening. Thanks in advance for your help. apt upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrad...

Re: Mint 17 and 18 AMDGPU drivers! Look here before doing anything!

I bought a couple Samsung 32" TV sets to use as monitors and the text looked really bad. It almost looked that old CRTs with bad convergence. What should be a thin black vertical line seemed to have colored edges. I thought it was the monitors. But I have a Windows 10 laptop so I thought I'd try it ...

Anything I can do or should I just get a new graphics card? And which one?

Re: Migrating from Yum to Apt

yum list all yum list installed yum list available (not installed) Looks like some thought went into designing yum. Personally I find apt weak - or rather the combination of apt, apt-get, apt-cache, dpkg and all the rest you need to get a decent set of options. When I had Fedora installed (20 or 21...

usleep solution

Just some information for those of you who can't find usleep anywhere and need it. The busybox app has usleep in it. And you have to do is:

cd /bin
ln busybox usleep

And you have it!

Re: xorg.conf?

I did all that. I did finally find a solution. I run this script: xset -dpms xset s off xset s noblank in a cron job once a minute. Yes - overkill perhaps but it works. And it works even if you're in root running the gui. This gets you around the "nanny mode" that some people who can't handle the id...
