I'm having the same problem (my display adapter isn't bad) I simply installed Linux Mint 17 Mate onto a USB 3.0 key. I can barely get Linux Mint to boot up before it halts. I've tried it both in a USB 3 port and a USB 2 port. Linux Mint simply won't boot in Live mode with a Persistent State enabled....
