Re: Why do newcomers stay with Mint?

I don't think there has been or will be any OS that suits all needs. Certainly not in my life seeing the evolution of IBM's first term, Apple1, pcDOS, VMS. Solaris, etc etc. On the Linux side now you have hardware dedicated os's like rasbarian for the PI, penetration hacking OS's on same etc, server...

fun day on Easter, got a young nephew interested in LM

I have a nephew in middle school who has had a tough time as he, like me, learns a little bit differently, hence middle school sucks big time. But he's actually smart, just has to learn how to package info for himself in his own way etc. Rather tough times now though. But I learned that he really lo...

[solved]help diagnose external HD on eSATA controller doesn't show

edit to add: solved. I'm a dummy. The reason I don't just delete is to show that at least the linux command line tools was telling me something right in my face. dmesg was telling me I had a bad sata port 5 connection.. not a pcie sata controller, that was on an old system. I didn't even know my own...

Re: Flatbed scanner

I have a similar but older cannon scanner. Could no longer get an ms windows driver for it so became useless. Once I started with linux Mint using Xsane (install from package manager is simplest) it worked wonderfully. Can import from GIMP, Inkscape as well if you configure (almost automatic) to use...

for PDF's document viewer/xreader 2.0 needs more love

In the quest for better alternatives to adobe acrobat reader and editor I totally missed the simple xreader aka document viewer in LM 19.1 cinnamon (others?). I have tried various web recommended alternatives like libra office draw, Okular, Scribus, and adobe acrobat installed in wine (with winetric...

Re: Linux Mint 17.x reaches end of life in April

Since LM 17 is ( or was/has been/whatever) so popular, why can't it be supported longer? As Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.04 (some 90 % of its packages are unchanged upstream Ubuntu), you'd have to ask the Ubuntu developers that. Maintaining the EOL upstream Ubuntu packages would be qui...

Re: antivirus

Thats not to say there haven't been or do not exist now vulnerabilities in Linux, Linux Mint. Keep it patched and up to date. Don't install things randomly from non official LM sources.

Re: Ooops. Lost my mintUpdate daemon and applet

If you are at System Tray, just click on it, to highlight it, and go to the bottom and click Add to panel. There should be a button beside the lock that's white with a green center, if it's activated. The 2nd one I listed is in the same Preferences section as Applets, called Startup Applications. T...

Re: Ooops. Lost my mintUpdate daemon and applet

Thanks again! yes I still have the same issue. I thought I saw something about a log file above or maybe I'm knee jerking on that. I can show processes up after fresh reboot if useful. I still have to invoke manually. I don't see anything on the gui for the update manager for auto starting. The two...

Re: Ooops. Lost my mintUpdate daemon and applet

<side note on the joy of localized application names> No complaint about having the string "Linux Mint Update Manager" as the non-localized subtitle. I am not the biggest fan of translating all the genuine application names into local languages. Frequently makes talking about applications more diff...

Re: Ooops. Lost my mintUpdate daemon and applet

Good morning, gm10. Just checked here on the Mint 18.1 xfce system, where I had typed my previous post as well. Actually, here the item is labelled mintupdate (Linux Mint Update Manager) in the Startup Applications list. So both terms are given: mintupdate and Update Manager . This should be the la...

Re: Ooops. Lost my mintUpdate daemon and applet

Hello, oldgranola. Inspect the list of "Startup Applications". It is available in the [Mint] application menu and through "System Settings". Check if there is an item in the list of "Startup Applications", named "mintupdate". In case it has been disabled (unticked), enable (tick) it again. Next tim...

Ooops. Lost my mintUpdate daemon and applet

In LM 19.1 cinnamon the update manager icon on the taskbar went away and I see that the update manager process isn't running automatically after boot. I have to invoke it manually after boot and to see whats up. After doing so I see mintupdate process (ps mintUPdate and in Htop) but no gui telling m...

Re: [recommend] Kodi solution= flatpak!

ya I had to do that already because 18 wouldn't run. But still, the best addons crashed 17.6 in LM. I also have to say that kodi 18 is an upgrade, definitely, and kodi 17 is no longer being worked on by team xbmc for any OS. Also, addon devs are all going to 18 compatibility which will break some 17...

[recommend] Kodi solution= flatpak!

I hope not premature, but for those of us having Kodi problems in Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1, 18.x I think I can recommend the kodi 18 Flatpak package from Flathub.org flathub.org . Previousely, I could not get kodi 18 to run at all due to VDPAU issues (amdgpu specific?) and even with deprecated kodi ...

To the OP, you really need to give more info on your setup or no one can help. But "Who says Mint is trying to be the default os? " was really completely non helpful. sorry to the OP for that, not our usual response here.

Re: Uninstalled Python 2.7 and now Mint won't boot, etc

Eeeek! A while back trying to fix Kodi on LM17 I was warned by smarter folks here not to do that:>) If there is a specific reason you are sticking to LM17 instead of upgrading such as AMD graphics drivers, I can tell you that LM19.1 free AMDGPU is working fine for me on an AMD APU. So one alternativ...

I just did a google to search the LM forums on 'kodi' + "update". There are many on this and similar topics. Here is your exact problem documented  Don't worry, its a learning curve for sure :D

Re: Kodi won't play anything after update

Also, I don't post an error log because there was no error, just an endless wait for something to happen. Hand on forehead.. There are indeed errors, thats what is happening under the hood. There is also indeed a log. It is in .kodi/temp/, go look. There will be two at least a new one 'kodi.log' an...
