Re: Linux Mint 20 success or issues

Today I installed LM20 cinnamon on three laptops and two desktops. Desktops are my own frankenstein home builds, laptops were Lenovo, and two HP's. All but one were in dual or tri boot systems. Clean installs into older LM partitions were easy peasy and worked well accept for the stupid SAMBA not be...

enabling SMB1 for new install or LM20 should be a sticky

Just because everybody who installs LM20 (think also LM19.x) who also has to connect to a NAS or windows type share is going to experience the very strange decision to disable that in SAMBA, this https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=322404&p=1831297&hilit=mint+20+samba#p1831297 url or s...

Re: for lm20 upgrade, how to downgrade gm10's mint-common,mozo

Also while backing up I took a look at a man page for dpkg-divert-linux on nixdog.net. There is a file /var/lib/dpkg/diversions which on this system has the lines: /usr/bin/mint-refresh-cache /usr/bin/mint-refresh-cache.mint-common Dare I just edit those lines out? Cheers cat file diversions: /usr/s...

Re: for lm20 upgrade, how to downgrade gm10's mint-common,mozo

Thanks. Interesting learning experience. I'm making another backup of my home directory and copying my timeshift snapshots elsewhere also, so I will try after that is done and keep you posted. I did download from http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mint-common/ and tried to install from .deb o...

Re: for lm20 upgrade, how to downgrade gm10's mint-common,mozo

Thanks again Xenopeak. I believe I was successful in removing gm10's update manager but it was an iterative process. I believe I have the correct version now. I tried your suggestion to simultaneously reinstall but got errors again on mint-common. See below. $ apt policy mintupdate mintupdate: Insta...

Re: for lm20 upgrade, how to downgrade gm10's mint-common,mozo

Hi thanks. It appears the ower of those files in cache is root, correct? BTW I ran the dpkg as written then did ls -l again fun@fun2:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/mint-refresh-cache /usr/bin/mint-refresh-cache.mint-common -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1695 Dec 16 2019 /usr/bin/mint-refresh-cache -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root...

Clearing out the rest of GM10's residue

Seeing that the GM10 project thread has been locked, please forgive me for bringing it up again. I have tried in the 'installation and boot section' with zero response. I find I still have two packages from his PPA that I couldn't revert or downgrade [downgrade foreign packages] to standard as neede...

Re: 19.3 boot needs key presses to progress

The first 'brand' splash would be the motherboard Bios announcing itself (as long as its not saying Mint or Ubuntu etc). If it hangs there I would say you may have something in the bios boot manager settings that loads prior to any OS stuff (grub) causing that. Or something is up with grub, same for...

for lm20 upgrade, how to downgrade gm10's mint-common,mozo

I am looking to upgrade from min19.3 to mint20 cinnamon and am reading the instructions here: https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/upgrade-to-mint-20.html In attempting to downgrade foreign packages with the package manager it fails at: package mint-common 1:2.6~gm10 and package moz...

Phoronix article on "Ubuntu community friction, uncertainty": Glad LM still has LMDE

I have read that part of the reason for keeping the LMDE project here going for LM is just in case something happens to the Ubuntu project. Here's an article in Phoronix on recent Ubuntu community issues, difficulty filling key positions, friction and future uncertainty. https://www.phoronix.com/sca...

Re: Manjaro - what's the big deal

I love Manjaro and its rolling release, user base, newest available programs etc. It feels very fresh. I don't have to wait for Ubuntu to catch up. I was [princess] about something here on Mint not having some up-to date tool I wanted and the reply was something like " well for that you need to go t...

Re: Linux Mint 20 success or issues

I have not upgraded or clean installed yet from 19.3 cinnamon, waiting for time and some userbase experience. There is a lot to digest here and the 'readme'. Looks to me that the major issues revolve around 1. Some packages no longer in the current official Ubuntu package base, thus not played well ...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

I also found it an iterative process of downgrade and repair/fix broken packages. But I was able to use synaptic package manager to get most of it down.

Ya, lot of UKUU updates too.
I removed gm10's mintupdate and got the official one working. Sure feels like a downgrade... Wish the mint community could have forked it for LM20.

Re: re-install of mintupdate not working

What did work though was to use software sources tool in maintenance to 'restore official package version' tool after 'delete cached repository index'. Thats me random clicking, sometimes works.... Gotta say though, looking at the official mintupdate tool I now have, sure gonna miss gm10's work. Why...
