openQA

Just finished the last day of Linux Fest Northwest 2016 and went to a talk about how RedHat and OpenSuSE are doing QA before a release using a project called openQA that programmatically does visual inspections of their builds. The QA team at SuSE has it to the point where they trust openQA enough t...

username and password dialogues

So, I frequently find myself typing half my password before I realize that I'm on the username dialogue. This is because both the username and the password dialogues look the same and sit on the exact same space on the screen. Luckily it hasn't been an issue yet, but it's only a matter of time befor...

[SOLVED] - Wireless on Lenovo Y700 (Intel 8086:1010)

Here's how I got Wireless working for my Lenovo Y700. This is mix of different solutions that I pieced together to be as Mint-y/Ubuntu-y as possible. That's also to say that, while I'm doing this on Mint, these instructions should also work on Ubuntu. Verify that you're working with the correct hard...

Re: Touchscreen

Touchscreen on my HP m7-n101dx on 17.3 isn't working for me, either. It's worth noting that I thought I'd give a few distros a shot before returning to Mint; the touchscreen worked just fine in Solus and OpenSUSE (tumbleweed). This suggests a configuration or hardware detection issue specific to Min...

Re: [SOLVED] Bash, replace ' ' in string, output to variable

There was (is?) a very long standing bug surrounding replacing spaces using sed, and as a result, I strongly recommend NOT using sed to replace whitespace. Use 'tr' instead.

e.g.

Code: Select all

user@linux$ echo "$filename" | tr " " "_"

Re: The location is not a folder

I suspect that the media device is taking too long to respond to mint. To confirm this, try the following. From the wife's machine, access the path/file (try #1, then try #2). From your own machine, try to access the path/file again. If there's no error, then the media device is (partially) at fault...

Re: Micro lags (freezes / stuttering) (17.1, ATI 7700)

Stuttering has been a classic problem of ATI cards from the early 2000s depending on the model. Generally, this been considered a driver problem. What happens when you dial back the in-game graphics settings a little? With that said, stutter has historically only been noticeable in benchmark results...

Re: Samba shares for Windows PCs Passwords View/Update

you can use smbpasswd to change the password for the user+share, but recovery of the old password isn't really an option on Linux.

However, you can boot the windows machine with the below. It'll take anywhere from a few minutes to a few centuries to run.

Re: All applications are invisible. Graphics driver problem?

Yeah, I ran into this same problem while using the drivers direct from AMD and then installed updates. Using the driver directly from AMD and the regular Mint updates REALLY do not play well together. I've been using Linux for 13yrs and even I struggled a little with undoing what the updates had don...

Re: Torrent download speed decreases

Require encryption in your torrent client and see what happens. I can't speak for other ISPs, but Comcast uses Deep Packet Inspection to see what type of traffic you're creating and then throttles it accordingly. This combo is called "Quality of Service" (or less commonly, "traffic shaping") and in ...

Re: LM 17 can't get past "minty" logo

I wouldn't try to transfer anything that isn't your home directory. If I were going to do something like what you want, I would create a list of installed packages dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall > ~/Desktop/packages Copy my home directory to an external storage device cp -r /home/USER' /m...

d'oh. Yeah, sorry. There's a submenu or something in the tray icon. I dropped my LM machine  so I can't check exactly what that is, but the process is more or less what I've done in the past.

Glad you got it sorted!

Nope, not normal. Sounds like there's a service running in the background that has a serious memory leak. Just as a place to start, I think I'd install htop and keep an eye on what processes is eating up memory.

Re: Make Iron my default browser?

There should be an option within Iron to set it as the default browser. Just make sure any other browsers have this setting disabled first. I was also using Iron at work until a coworker pointed out that there's no real difference between Iron and Chromium; they should both have the googley bits pul...
