Re: [SOLVED / Redundant] Advice requested on planning partitions across SSD + HDD for new machine
Closing this out as Solved - well, actually it's redundant as I've subsequently come into possession of a new machine with a single 2TB hard drive

[SOLVED / Redundant] Advice requested on planning partitions across SSD + HDD for new machine
Greetings, I'm planning on shortly decommissioning my current 2007-vintage desktop PC and moving everything onto a new setup, and the plan is to have the new machine run Linux Mint straight away. My challenge is that while my current 'potato' so-old-it-originally-came-with-Windows-Vista machine curr...

Re: My PC thinks it's hundreds of miles away
I'm in Illinois, and my computer, from time to time, thinks it's in La Vista, Nebraska. Why there, I have no idea, but I did look it up, seems like a nice community. I can do better - I'm in New Zealand, but due to the configuration of $VERYBIGCO's intranet gateway to the outside world, my work com...

Re: LM 20.2 sticky is not starting
I have the same problem with Sticky Notes not starting. Here's what I get when I run Sticky Notes from Terminal: terry@Vixen-IV-L ~ $ sticky Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/sticky/sticky.py", line 625, in do_activate self.load_notes() File "/usr/lib/sticky/sticky.py&...

Re: Sticky Notes as replacement for GNote - How?
I just did the upgrade from 20.1 to 20.2 and I was looking forward to seeing what Sticky Notes would be like - but I couldn't get it to work at all! All that happens (after an initial prompt to migrate Gnote data to Sticky Notes) is an icon to come up on the taskbar, a constellation of sticky notes ...

Re: mockturtle Weather applet no longer working (bug report raised)
A new developer has taken over the Weather App, and it's now fixed (you have to register for a free OpenWeather API key to use it).

Update from the applet author on GitHub:

I'm using the bbcwx@oak-wood.co.uk desklet (with OpenWeatherMap) as an alternative.

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint??
Why did I decide to install Linux Mint four years ago? Primarily because Windows Vista was approaching end of life, a simple upgrade to 64-bit Windows 8 at the time wasn't possible (because I have wound up with 32-bit Vista on a 64-bit machine for what seemed like good reasons at the time), and I fi...

[SOLVED] mockturtle Weather applet no longer working (bug report raised)
In case anyone was wondering why the "Weather" (weather@mockturtl) Cinnamon applet is no longer working as of Friday 4 January, it's possibly due to the Yahoo! API the app uses no longer being supported. https://developer.yahoo.com/weather/?guccounter=1 Important EOL Notice: As of Thursday...

Re: Clementine icons look horrible
I found the same thing when I installed the non-flatpak Clementine off the Mint Software Manager. The only solution I found was to uninstall that version, and install the Flatpak version. All the icons now look the way they should - but now album art doesn't appear in the taskbar Sound app. (I think...

Making a desktop launcher for "cd" + bash script
Occasionally I do art streaming on Picarto, and I have a nifty little CLI utility "grab-song" which allows me to pass details of the currently playing song (from Rhythmbox or Clementine) into a text file that I can then display in my stream. The commands I use to run grab-song are: cd grab...

Re: Gimp 2.10.4 has no maximize button.
I've found a simlar thing with GIMP 2.20 installed via flatpak - I first found it in LM18.3 MATE, and it persisted into LM19 Cinnamon. For me, the single mode window was maximised far beyond the screen resolution, resulting in the bottom buttons of panels not being visible. Switching between themes ...

[SOLVED] flatpaks running in "superuser" mode - is this OK?
I've been trying out various flatpak applications(1) on Mint 18.3 MATE, and I've noticed that all the flatpak apps run in "superuser" mode. 1) Is this normal and/or intentional? 2) Is this a good idea? 3) Can flatpaks be run as a normal user, and if so, how? Having successfully adapted to ...

and I did not know there was an install option Most of the AppImages I have used asked to be installed. I think that is the norm, and from an end-user stand point it makes sense to do it that way. Re: any timer software out there similar to this for windows?
Which desktop are you using - Cinnamon, MATE, or something else? If you're using MATE there's a Timer applet you can add to the panel, which can be configured to display a popup notification. Right-click on the panel, select "Add To Panel", then select the Timer applet and select "Add...

Re: "The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed package' failed to install into /target/."
Try installing without an Internet connection (disable any wifi connection / disconnect the network cable). There is an issue affect some users where GRUB fails to install when connected to the Internet. Yes, this works! I did this after umpteen failed attempts at installing with the network in pla...

Re: Brother DCP-J125 receiving data but not printing
My father has the 64-bit installation of Mint 17.3 Cinnamon - that's what was on the LiveDVD I gave him:-) And we did use the printer driver tool from the Brother website, I walked him through the process and watched him on a shared desktop session on Skype. (Still trying to work out how to do the r...
