Re: Firejail not sandboxing [SOLVED]

Hi folks, Just a few comments/clarifications. :D Installing firejail, in and of itself, doesn't actually apply any sandboxing. To run a program in the sandbox, you must either (1) run firejail <name-of-the-program> , or run sudo firecfg first and then start programs the way you normally would (from ...

Re: Are Linux distributions really so different from one another?

if you compare something like mint, ubuntu, and debian, they are going to be similar, however, if you compare mint to something else, like manjaro or arch, for example, much of the software isnt remotely cross-compatible and the distros are very different. I disagree a bit on the software. My Arch ...

Re: Why oh Why can't we make Linux better looking

Yes, but is it spyware? Opinions seems to differ. Opinions are cheap. It's open source so claims of spyware would be easy to back up, yet I haven't seen that happening. I haven't reviewed the source myself so I don't have an opinion other than the faint idea that "somebody else would have found it ...

Welcome to the family, and Happy Minting!

If you don't need advanced features and are comfortable putting your docs on the cloud, you might want to look at the free office online. It works nicely with Linux too.

Cheers!

Then, to make it work with firejail, I had to add a whitelist statement to /etc/firejail/firefox.profile : whitelist ${HOME}/Data/.firefox and another to /etc/firejail/thunderbird.profile : whitelist ${HOME}/Data/.thunderbird Note - the names of your FF and TB profile directories may differ from mi...

Re: Firejail and other apps?

Do you run sudo firecfg frequently, or only once after installing firejail? You should only have to run it the one time.

Please run deluge in your terminal and post the output here.

Now run firejail deluge and post the output.

Thanks!

Hi Fred. I still have in mind your great tutorial to get rid of deb multimedia repo in LMDE2. Maybe you will update it to fit LMDE3 ?
For sure, I'll do that. :) Cheers!

Re: Firejail and other apps?

G'day @thesmileyone! A few notes: 1. If you've run sudo firecfg , you shouldn't start programs with firejail -- it will happen automatically. For example, run firefox , not firejail firefox , or filezilla , not firejail filezilla . I'm not sure if this is what you've done or not, but it can cause un...

Re: How can I find the Ubuntu version for Linux Mint 18.3?

You did get it right - all the Mint 18.x releases are based on Ubuntu 16.04. :) Mint 19 (and the future 19.1, 19.2, and 19.3) is based on Ubuntu 18.04. I think there's also some useful information if you run cat /etc/os-release in your terminal, but I might be wrong (I'm not running Mint at the mome...

Re: New Dropbox System Requirements

I don't host anything in the cloud. Were I to have some future need to do so, it would all be as encrypted archive files. I don't know why people are, frankly, stupid enough to do this some other way and thereby leave their own security responsibility up to someone else. I can understand it, to som...

Instructions for adding Stretch backports can be found here: https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/. Somebody should try this with a LMDE 3 test install :) Done and it was seamless! Has anyone tried rclone? It says it works with Dropbox and looks pretty easy to install (they've got .debs). I don't use Dropbox or sync to the cloud myself so I don't need it, but I know some folks who might.

Cheers!

Re: non-repository software

Hi @dougmn Disadvantages I can think of are: 1. No easy updates. You (probably) won't see updates for out-of-repository packages in your Update Manager, for instance. Some programmes like Google Chrome or Atom do add an update repository to your system, so you'll see updates for these, but most don'...

Re: No writing permissions on newly formatted USB-Stick (ntfs)?

Hi InChrist, I suspect the USB is currently only writable to the root user. To fix that, open a terminal and find your username with whoami Then look for your USB stick device name with lsblk It should be something like /dev/sdb1 . Make sure you get the right name! ;) Finally, change the owner with ...
