Re: How to wipe a Linux Mint laptop

I seem to remember that DBAN doesn't work with uefi, so you would need to boot it in legacy mode.

Re: Install Evernote on Linux Mint 18.2, 64 bits, KDE edition

I use Nixnote 2.0 and while it's not perfect and doesn't exactly replicate the function of the official app it's as good as it gets on Linux if the web interface is not an option. If you're a free user Nixnote doesn't count against your 'device' limit either, so with my phone, tablet and PC I've got...

Re: Black screen after hibneration

I've had lots of issues with suspend/hibernate on different distros, but on my hardware most of the problems disappeared as of kernel 4.10 - which is available in the Mint update manager.

Re: Mixing icon themes

Thanks. Played around for a while and found a really simple solution - the Vibrancy colour themes only contain the coloured folder icons and 'inherit' the rest of the theme from the master vibrancy theme. I simply changed the index.theme file to inherit from Arc instead.

VibrArc lives!

Mixing icon themes

I've got a cosmetic issue with XFCE that Google can't seem to help with. I've got two XFCE icon themes that I really like - Vibrancy and Arc. I'd like to mix them together to create my own personal theme but I have no idea how to do this. Specifically I'd like to use Arc as a base and change the pro...

Re: Screen Tearing.... when will it be solved?

Mint 18.1 Xfce, Nvidia GTX970 - I've had tearing issues since the Nvidia drivers updated to 375, even with the composition pipeline trick. Reading around it sounds like it's a known problem that's been fixed, BUT the fix only works if you have kernel 4.6 or later, xorg 1.19 and the latest Nvidia dri...

Re: How to wirelessly transfer files between my computers/devices

Dropbox, Google drive, spider oak, any kind of cloud storage service. You may have to get a paid add on for true synchronization on your android devices, or if you want to encrypt what goes off to the external servers. I also use ES file manager on my android devices which sets up a local FTP server...

Re: Suspend not working. Black screen can't wake

Update from me - I've updated the kernel to the 4.10 series via the Mint update manager and updated my nvidia drivers to nvidia-381 from the graphics-drivers PPA: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa sudo apt-get update [Then select and install the driver from driver manager] Fingers cro...

There's a bit near the start of 10_linux that should look something like this: if [ "x${GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR}" = "x" ] ; then OS=GNU/Linux else case ${GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR} in Ubuntu|Kubuntu) OS="Linux Mint 18 Xfce 64-bit" ;; *) OS="${GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR} GNU/Linux" ;; esac CLASS="--class $(echo ${GRUB_DISTRIB...

Re: [SOLVED] "A Problem Has Been Detected With Your Thumbnail Cache"

I solved this one by mounting the thumbnail cache to a tmpfs in the RAM. It wipes itself every reboot but that's what I wanted - takes up less room on the disk drive and it's more secure. I added this line to /etc/fstab tmpfs /home/USERNAME/.cache/thumbnails/ tmpfs defaults,noatime,nosuid,uid=1000,g...

You're a power user and people like me are not. You know the codes for using the terminal where as people like me "do not". . So why not install it in Software manager? Most Windows users only use internet explorer once, to find and download a superior alternative, ie. Chrome. This is the exact sam...

Re: Nemo - major security issue?

Solved! Learned a little about policykit authentication today. I edited the file: file:///usr/share/polkit-1/actions/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.nemo.root.policy and changed: <defaults> <allow_any>auth_admin_keep</allow_any> <allow_inactive>auth_admin_keep</allow_inactive> <allow_active>auth_admi...

Re: Nemo - major security issue?

Ok, so it's a deliberate action. Does anyone know a way to make it time out faster, or disable cache authorisation altogether? It seems the simplest solution would be to end the nemo process when I close the last window rather than leaving it run in the background. BTW I fixed the desktop right clic...

Re: Nemo - major security issue?

I'll try leaving it and seeing if it times out. Just noticed something else weird, sometimes but not all the time while Nemo is running (foreground or background) right clicking on the upper left region of the desktop brings up Nemo's right click context menu instead of the desktop menu. What's up w...

[Solved] Nemo - major security issue?

I'm using mint 18 Xfce but I use Nemo as my file manager. I've just noticed a big security problem with it: I right click in a directory, click open as root, and enter my password. Nemo opens as root with the red banner - all good. But if I close all the windows, the come back later and click open a...

Re: New Computer

I've got a mid range gaming PC and I keep win10 on it purely for running games. It's an i5 3.5ghz OC'd to 4.2ghz, 8gb ram, nvidia gtx970 graphics with 4gb vram. I use a 1080p monitor and this configuration lets me run the latest games at max settings at 60fps. I never buy premade systems, waste of m...

Re: Suspend not working. Black screen can't wake

Similar issue on my last two machines, from mint 17 through to18 with level 1-5 updates, latest bios updates, and occasionally updated kernels. The PC will suspend and wake perfectly about 80% of the time and the rest of the time it will power back up but freeze on a black screen, requiring a hard r...

Re: I can not delete the history URL addresses of Firefox in BleachBit

Thanks Cosmo. So every picture, video or audio that I have acess in internet (like browsing in YouTube per example), are the cache of the browser? This is the reason I changed my Firefox cache directory to /dev/shm The cache still works as it should but shm runs in the RAM, so your cache is never w...
