Re: Use a Windows software

It may be helpful to give details of how to set up a free engine such as Stockfish on Linux Mint. The problem is that you also need a display program and, in the case of Stockfish, a translation program. Thus one way is to use the Software Manager to install Stockfish, Xboard and Polyglot. Then you ...

Re: Firejail beta-testers wanted!

I seem to have become a(n unqualified) beta tester. I seem to have similar problems to slipstick. Running Firefox from a terminal and trying to open a .pdf file gives Warning: an existing sandbox was detected. /usr/bin/firefox will run without any additional sandboxing features (firefox:9): LIBDBUSM...

Re: Firefox 60.0 and Firejail

I followed Pjotr helpful instructions and installed Firejail 9.54 and Firefox 60 started to work. However, I cannot now open .pdf files although I can download them by choosing the save file option. I can open them as before using Firefox 60 if I do not start it in Firejail. I think that what you'r...

[Solved] Pulseaudio Problem between Xplayer and Firefox

Firstly, I should apologise for not mentioning Firejail at the start of this thread. The reason was that I did not realise that Firejail was causing the problem. I had been running Firefox in Firejail before Firefox 52 was released without the sound problem. When the problem started, I identified it...

Re: Pulseaudio Problem between Xplayer and Firefox

One difficulty with that is that the Mint depository is supplying old versions of both Firejail, 9.44 when 9.52 is available, and Pulseaudio 8.0, when 11.1 is available. Apparently this may become a serious problem when Mint upgrades to Firefox 59 https://github.com/netblue30/firejail/issues/1739. I...

Re: Pulseaudio Problem between Xplayer and Firefox

I think that I may have found the problem. I was running Firefox in Firejail. According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi ... PulseAudio, typing in to a terminal firecfg --fix -sound may help. I tried that and after typing pulseaudio -k, I haven't been able to repeat the problem.

Re: Pulseaudio Problem between Xplayer and Firefox

VLC media player is slightly more informative, saying that the audio device "default" could not be used. It also works OK after typing pulseaudio -k in a terminal. Added as edit: Gnash also fails to give sound but does not give a message. YouTube is not the culprit as I can also cause the problem by...

Re: Pulseaudio Problem between Xplayer and Firefox

I have investigated further. Simply replaying a YouTube video does not cause a problem. However, opening a new tab and opening a YouTube video does stop the sound from Xplayer

[Solved] Pulseaudio Problem between Xplayer and Firefox

Has anyone else had a problem getting sound from Xplayer 1.22 (which I seem to have installed) after starting Firefox 58 or listening to sound on Firefox? If I listen to a Youtube video and then click on an .mp4 file, there is no sound. I have to close the Xplayer window and type pulseaudio -k befor...

Re: Firefox dumped my bookmarks

Now posting with FF 58.0. Seems to work but has a bigger border on top and they have changed how bookmarks are displayed. The good news is that my bookmarks and login details seem to have survived. I tend to prefer Palemoon's look but I will try to get used to the quantum leap into the dark.

Re: Firefox dumped my bookmarks

I have to confess that I have been using FF 56 up to today whilst trying to decide between FF 57, FF 52 ESR and Palemoon. I have decided to update to FF57 in a few minutes and try it whilst reading https://forums.informaction.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23974 carefully. I have backups of the FF54 and 56...

Re: Strange Firefox 56 state [Solved]

Thank you for explaining that it is uBlock Origin. It had happened twice accidentally and I had had to close the tabs. I can now get there deliberately and, after looking at the instructions, I now know to press escape.

Strange Firefox 56 state [Solved]

Does anyone know what I have done to get a Firefox tab into this condition and how to get out of it?

Re: pgn viewer

You have probably also found and installed stockfish, which can tell you how you should have played your games. I installed xboard and polyglot and then found that xboard -fUCI -fcp stockfish seemed to run stockfish and allows you to load pgn files and analyse the positions. However, It would be nic...

Re: Mild problems with .html and .htm files after transfer

I have looked a little deeper into the issue of executable text files. The effect seems to involve several other file types. For example, my chess games are *.pgn (portable game notation) and have similarly become executable. As these were almost all in a single directory, which had been backed up, ...

Mild problems with .html and .htm files after transfer

I am posting this mostly for information as I think that I now know some of what is occurring but it puzzled me initially. I have recently bought a new computer and installed Mint 18.1 Serena on it. All seems well with the operating system but I had some trouble with the files backed up from my old ...

Re: Firefox, uBlock Origin and BBC IPlayer

It seems to be the Easy Privacy list from forums.lanik.us that causes the problem after following Cosmo's suggestion.
