Booting from USB flash drives

I've never noticed anything bad about Sandisk's factory formatting. If software is included that isn't relevant to me, I delete it, but I've never found a need to reformat the flash device.

Can you elaborate?

Booting from USB flash drives

Since USB3 devices are supposed to be backwards-compatible, I wonder if the USB3 thumbdrive would boot if inserted in a USB2 port? I tried this recently. The USB3 thumbdrive didn't boot when inserted in a USB2 port. BUT... The USB3 thumbdrive in a USB2 port also wasn't automounted, nor automaticall...

Re: After install, programs give errors like "can't set the locale"

Yes, I've also done similarly and got the same result. The problem followed the existing /home partition. The cause turned out to be a file called .dmrc in the primary user's home folder: [Desktop] Language=en_US Langlist=en_US:en LCMess=en_US.UTF-8 Layout=us Session=xfce Deleting that .dmrc file fi...

Programs give errors like "can't set the locale"

Thanks to both for your replies. As noted, I'd like to find out why [this issue occurred] in the first place, so this problem hopefully won't happen at all for future users. Because of George99 's statement about LC_ALL, I've changed the title of this posting. I've filed comment https://bugs.launchp...

[SOLVED] After install, programs give errors like "can't set the locale"

Linux Mint 18.1 Serena XFCE, recent install (/home is pre-existing from an earlier distro). Same issue as in https://github.com/linuxmint/live-installer/issues/80 (that issue was with Linux Mint Debian Edition). I selected an English (US) locale and the default 105-key keyboard. I don't remember doi...

Re: Notes on converting an MBR hard disk to GPT

In installing Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" recently, I found the following: (I know this forum is for LMDE instead of the Main Edition, but the post is relevant to the previous ones in this thread :-) Unetbootin isn't in the LMDE repos, but I had Unetbootin on the prior Linux distro, so I used that to p...

Re: Notes on converting an MBR hard disk to GPT

the machine boots the live-DVD as legacy, so the installer assumes a legacy boot system I've updated https://github.com/linuxmint/live-installer/issues/81 according to this. I admit that it's OK with me that the hard drive is GPT now. Also , I've just found out that the same PC's BIOS (which I've u...

Notes on converting an MBR hard disk to GPT

Recently I had to convert a PC's hard drive from MBR to GPT in order to install LMDE 2. Here are some notes on what I did: I am NOT an expert on this. If my notes here don't quite fix your problem, then probably someone else on this forum can help you better than I can. The PC had a previous Linux d...

Possibly add phpBB Auto Drafts extension to forum

The Auto Drafts extension is at https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/auto_drafts/ Currently, the forum logs out a user after an interval of inactivity. But because writing a post on this forum often requires collecting lots of technical data, such an interval can happen when the user is doin...

Minor comment about download page on website

https://linuxmint.com/verify.php mentions an --ignore-missing option to the sha256sum command. This option isn't currently in LMDE 2. The option was added in GNU coreutils version 8.25, which was released by GNU on Jan. 20, 2016. LMDE 2 has coreutils APT package version 8.23-4. Maybe that webpage sh...

2D layout for Cinnamon Applications menu

Please see https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/6279

Most discussion should probably be on this forum, not on GitHub, until developers are interested in making a change similar to the proposed one.

Re: Desktop theme suggestions about panels

2nd suggestion, again based on the "cinnamon" theme: In the Panel, the window-list applet currently is like so (if panel is @ bottom of screen): Button of non-focused window: A medium brownish-gray color from top to bottom. Button of the focused window: The same, except a gradient in which the top o...

Desktop theme suggestions about panels

I'm using the "cinnamon" desktop theme with the Atlanta window-borders theme. Both of these ship with the OS version that I'm running, LMDE2 "Betsy" Cinnamon 64-bit. When a panel is on the top edge of the screen, and a window is maximized, the panel + the window titlebar look totally flat, like one ...

Nemo uses copy-on-write :-D

I've found comments on the Web stating that in order for the command-line "cp" utility to use the copy-on-write feature of Btrfs (and other CoW filesystems), the user is supposed to give the --reflink=auto parameter explicitly. :-( In other words, there isn't a "copy files" function in the kernel th...

Re: Nemo: "+" sign for more right-click actions isn't obvious

JosephMcc himself made an interesting comment about the "+" icon while that feature was still in development: From https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/1012 [on Nov 17, 2015] I would much rather see the expander as [its] own menu item or see the extended menu items go into their own flyout. I un...

Nemo: "+" sign for more right-click actions isn't obvious

Although https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo/issues/1281 has been closed, I still agree with user "donlencho" who opened that issue. This forum thread is for any discussion on this topic. I can understand the need to save space, but really, that's not very discoverable. How would anyone click there th...

Default window-border themes developed by Linux Mint?

I wonder if Linux Mint should fork the window-border themes that currently ship with the OS but were developed by the GNOME project? These themes are currently in the metacity-common APT package. I was going to make some suggestions upstream (GNOME Project). I searched on "Atlanta," since that's the...

[SOLVED] Jessie-backports not automatically prompting to update

Thanks for your reply. I changed the Pin-Priority in the .pref file from 400 to 500; now the jessie-backports packages are automatically prompted to me by the Linux Mint update manager and by Synaptic (Synaptic shows a gray exclamation-mark icon that means "Installed (upgradable)"). I found the text...
