Re: {SOLVED] ! GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

SNAFU no more! Yet another install of 18.3 and I finally got it to work. I can now encrypt and decrypt the same as I could in 17.3!     This time during the install routine, I did not choose to encrypt the /home folder... same as I did above with 17.3. Why that makes a diff...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

They belong to the same pair. Ok then it should allow enc and dec but it only works one way, Why? No one seems to know, least of all me. FWIW: I removed 18.3 and re-installed 17.3. First and ONLY thing I did was not to encrypt the /home folder ...... plus I immediately installed nemo-seahorse and i...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Oddly enough I can't remember which one.

But that aside why are both my public and secret keys showing the same signature.. better than that they are identical!

That can't possibly be right, if the public key is the same as the secret one, it negates having keys at all!

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Some progress. I can now encrypt a file/ folder but cannot decrypt them. Same thing in Enigmail encryption works fine but fails to decrypt. I get the same message 'Decryption failed. You probably do not have the decryption key.' If I create a file on the desktop and encrypt it, then right click it, ...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

The only backup I had was of LM18.2 I wanted to copy the entire .gnupg folder but had no luck doing that What does "had no luck" mean? I have no idea, what this says. Cosmo, Wow, I thought that phrase is self explanatory especially with the reference in the reply to "kyphi". As ...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

kyphi, I wish I had a copy on the SSD I use, but it's on a real external HD spinner, but I do not. I was going to copy it from Acronis, my backup program, to a USB stick but one of the files refused to let me copy it. I could get all the rest but one and I didn't make note of it. I'm assuming that m...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

I now have a virgin copy of 18.3 installed. I did NOT install another version of nemo seahorse. Why do you say "another version". Because yesterday it was made quite plain that SEAHORSE is already part of LM 18.3 and 'yes' I see that it IS. Under Keys & Passwords |About is 'seahorse' ...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Cosmo, I now have a virgin copy of 18.3 installed. I did NOT install another version of nemo seahorse. I did import both my pub and sec keys without incident using the MENU | Accessories | Passwords and Keys ( seahorse ) BUT even under GnuGP in the left pane,of that addon there is no mention of eith...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

All noted Cosmo sorry for the full quote reply.. No image of 17.3 found..gone as I predicted but... Now, I have installed 18.2 and I find that GPG works as it should with no problem. So I must re-install all of 18.3 from my DVD and start over again, just a little bit inconvenient but that's all, not...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

One of my 2 keys is showing but it's the public key and not the one I need. You do need the public for encryption. That is a principal of pgp: Encrypting with the public key, decrypting with the private (secret) key, which nobody than the receiver owns. Of course I mistyped or misspoke there! What ...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Before you remove or install anything relating to GPG, please note that if you need information about how to use GPG, try the command "man gpg" in a terminal. Also please note that "seahorse" is already installed in Linux Mint by default - obscured under the title "Password...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

If you have only your own key-pair, than is is ok and expected. Try again to excrypt via nemo-seahorse. Do you get the list of keys with your own key inside? If so, proceed, than try to decrypt this file. Cosmo, One of my 2 keys is showing but it's the public key and not the one I need. I see no wa...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Yes both keys are listed when I invoke that command! Odd thing is that if I change your command to gpg --list-public-keys gpg --list-public-keys It shows the same as the secret key list... clearly they aren't the same. That might not be correct for public keys I don't know but I thought I'd try it.

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Cosmo, Fwiw I was able to make a small test file and encrypt and decrypt it with terminal commands. Here's the issue I have an encrypted file already made that I need to decrypt on an as needed basis without a lot of fuss. All my passwords are in this file. If I make a new pass phrase it won't apply ...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

This makes more sense. Key and file are 2 different things; I really had no idea, what a missing decrypt file might be (in this context). For a test encrypt in 18.3 a file and try to decrypt it afterwards. Does this work without errors? Sorry but I have never encrypted a file using the terminal :oo...

Re: GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

In essence yes but here it is verbatim : Decryption failed. You probably do not have the decryption key.

But I do, there's just no line to enter it! :?

Note I installed nemo-seahorse not the one with Nautilus in the title fwiw....

{SOLVED] ! GPG secret key and public key imported but don't work

Just installed 18.3 today and of course want my GnuPG to work. I've installed nemo-seahorse and imported both my secret key and public key into it. When I right click the file I want to decrypt, it offers me a choice, the first one being 'decrypt file'.. if I choose that then it says ' you don't hav...

[SOLVED] "Swappiness" change necessary in 18.2 or not?

I came across a page that's all about optimizing the system for use with an SSD to increase it's life. One of the changes was to the swappiness of the OS: cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness Default is 60, the article says change it to "1" .... necessary or just nonsense? Also some info on how to ...

Re: Movin' on Up to 18.2 soon I hope... do I need a /Home partition

PrestonR, Slipped my mind in the previous reply. Using GnuGPG, there is a setting that controls the "ttl" for caching of passwords. I made that change in 17.3 but I forgot what file I edited <sigh> do you possibly have that answer? I lowered mine to 25 secs much shorter than the default. T...

Re: Movin' on Up to 18.2 soon I hope... do I need a /Home partition

PrestonR,

Just a note to say "thanks again" the install went just fine (took about 15 minutes or so) seems to be working fine and booted right up both OS's working as expected.

Thought you might be curious,

Cheers and Happy New Year,.....,"ES"
