Re: Dragon Like app?

I used Dragon to dictate hundreds of pages of law lecture notes back to text :?

It worked very well, as long as you stayed in a zen-like emotion free state. The subject matter helped :D

Re: Free PDF editing Software

... I know that others are using either Adobe Readers or Foxit software and I thought of getting PDF Studio but it is still too steep. So my question is: Is there a Linux Mint alternative to those programs that is free of charge, or do I need to pay to be able to work with pdfs? I went through a si...

Re: Install Veracrypt 1.19 on Mint 18 Cinnamon x64

[Update for latest version 1.22] In case anyone searches for how to install veracrypt 1.22... The latest version is not (yet) in the PPA above, but can be downloaded from the veracrypt website: https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Downloads.html The instructions to install are slightly different... when the ...

Re: Sell me on Linux please!

Let me give you a couple of reasons you might not want to use Linux: 1) If lack of compatibility with that 10 year old printer you use with Windows is a show stopper. In my case, just the reverse... my HP 1010 printer (manufactured September 2003) was not supported in Windows7, but was supported in...

Re: Net Neutrality

Unfortunately any change to law has to have a political element, by definition, as politicians tend to be law-makers  But I'll try to give a neutral view, i.e. not left or right (or even centrist) Here's a thought: Lets say a major international ISP is owned and controlled by persons with cert...

Re: My messing has disabled MintUpdate

In the Update Manager/View/History of Updates what is the date of the last updates? I haven't seen many lately--mine shows 12/13 My last one is 2017-12-16 - 12:58:26 multisystem 1.0406 1.0407 so maybe there is no update out there anyway and this has been a false alarm? UPDATE at 3.44pm 23 December ...

My favourite was a BMW 318is coupe that I got in 1994.

Only 140 BHP but back wheel drive and perfectly balanced. :D

[SOLVED] My messing has disabled MintUpdate (not really)

On 16th December, I was trying to upgrade to a later version of master-pdf-editor (4.3.61_qt5.amd64) which had a dependency on qt5. The versions of qt5 in Synaptic were not at a high enough version to satisfy that dependency, so I downloaded qt-opensource-linux-x64-5.10.0.run and tried to install it...

Re: Best LM extra-security/Encryption apps/programs?

I want to make LM even more secure. I am watched by many I suspect and I would like added layers of securing my system in any way possible via LM. I suggest you read the excellent guide given by Pjotr: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/mint-cinnamon-first This has several topics th...

Re: RAT on Mint Laptop

I suspect I have a Remote Access Trojan installed because sometimes my mouse cursor scrolls a bit downwards. I have disabled my touchpad and my mouse is relatively new. It's a 'Loki' gaming mouse. I had a similar problem about two months ago with a new install of Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on a brand...

Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

@mperkel I too was a system admin for many years. In that time I only ran with elevated privileges for specific tasks and to carry out specific changes to user files. I would not dream of running as root by default. As both revian and Pjotr have elegantly explained why normal operation should not be...

Re: Search options in Nemo, is it broken or what?

Same thing happens in 17.3 Cinnamon 64bit Nemo 2.8.7 You get a lot of options in gnome-search-tool - which is what I use and have added to my panel (bottom left quick links). It has the added feature of showing the "Date-Modified" in the results list, without having to display it by 'right-click a c...

Re: Is distro hopping ultimately pointless?

Distro hopping was A LOT(!) of fun for several years. But then real life kicked in. From my adventures I had come to realize that one could actually use Linux for serious work. Then I found that I needed the dreaded Killer of Distro Hopping---rock-solid stability. So my final destination became Min...

Re: Non Linux question about hard drive lifespan

Re the original question... back in the late 80s, hard drives had a lifespan of less than a year in desktops. I went through a few in those days. I think the introduction of UPS and filtered power supplies helped a lot. That said, I believe every laptop should be based on SSD, as it is daft to have ...

Re: E-mail Bombs Might Become More Common Now

If you own a website, you can do what I have always done - create a hundred "throw-away" email addresses. All mail to that address will be automatically forwarded to my gmail account. If I start getting spam to that address, I just delete it... That is very effective. I do it on a lesser scale: I h...
