Re: Any problems with using a newer version of FFMPEG?

I need to use FFMPEG to crunch a bunch of videos and would like to use the latest version. Why? Because of the new filters, and accelerated code path improvements? Anyway, you could try installing it; at worst, probably, you'll have some incompatible libraries and you'll have to remove the new stuf...

Re: Any problems with using a newer version of FFMPEG?

I solved the problem using a "static build" of ffmpeg. No need to install, just unpack and use. Link to download: https://johnvansickle.com/ Read the instructions in the FAQ. Just to organize, it is not mandatory: - I unzipped it to the folder "/opt/ffmpeg-4.0.2-32bit-static/". - In the "/usr/bin" ...

[SOLVED] Any problems with using a newer version of FFMPEG?

EDIT: ricardogroetaers's solution for the win! Using Mint 19. I need to use FFMPEG to crunch a bunch of videos and would like to use the latest version. Mint 19 ships with 3.4 (3.4.4?) and FFMPEG 4.1 has been submitted to upstream. If I follow this guide: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2018/10/...

Re: Periodic system freezes, interrupt took too long in dmesg

I can assure you it's not the kernel.perf_event. I got the same message: [bill@XPS] ~/Downloads $ dmesg -T |grep long [Thu Dec 20 16:55:10 2018] perf: interrupt took too long (2516 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 79250 [Thu Dec 20 21:09:25 2018] perf: interrupt took too long ...

Periodic system freezes, interrupt took too long in dmesg

Been using Mint 19 ever since it was released. For the past month or two, my system will freeze for a few seconds before returning to normal. When it freezes, the mouse and keyboard don't respond. I run Plex and Emby on this server and worry about this freezing having some sort of impact on streamin...

Excellent! I don't know much about that stripe_cache_size, but in any case it seems to have worked for you - so good job!

If you're satisfied this is solved, you may wish to update your topic to show [SOLVED] so that others will know, and can benefit from your experience.
Done. :)

Re: Safe to grow MDADM array with two drives at once?

Let us know how this goes! I've got a few systems set up with mdadm arrays, though at present I've had no need to make them any larger. All done with no problems! One weird thing though. After roughly 24 hours, I started looking for ways to speed things up because the speed was around 34000K/sec. E...

Re: Safe to grow MDADM array with two drives at once?

I've never tried it myself, but my understanding is that the risk is about the same as using --grow with a single drive. Either way, with an array that large, it could well be a multi-day process. Make sure you've got some kind of battery backup to protect against power spikes/outages. Reference: h...

[SOLVED] Safe to grow MDADM array with two drives at once?

I have 4, 8TB drives in a RAID 5 giving me 24TB with 1 drive as parity. I'm about to expand it to 40TB (adding 2 more 8TB drives) by issuing this command: sudo mdadm --grow --raid-devices=6 The drives are already added as spares: Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 8 96 0 active sync /dev/sdg 1 8 ...

[SOLVED] Re: Problems mounting 3TB USB drive

Can anyone load me up on commands to try when I get home to get this drive mounted? I wouldn't recommend that at all. There is something seriously wrong either with the device itself or there is filesystem corruption. Just because Windwoes will let you read and write to the drive it doesn't logical...

[SOLVED] Problems mounting 3TB USB drive

I'm at work right now (so can't carry out any troubleshooting steps but).... been having this weird problem. A friend gave me a USB 3TB drive to copy some data onto. It's an NTFS drive and if I hook it to my Windows 7 box, I can read/write to the drive just fine. If I attach it to my Mint 19 system,...

Question about using Raider to convert single drive to RAID 1

My current setup is Mint 19 on a single 250 gig boot SSD (XFS) and a 12 drive MDADM RAID 6 (md0, XFS) and a 4 drive MDADM RAID 5 (md127, ext 4). I want to add a 2nd SSD so my boot drive will have a RAID 1 mirror in case of hardware failure. I was looking around the found an awesome program called 'r...

Set UMASK globally or per folder?

I noticed that with Mint 18.3, the default umask value was (I believe) 0002. With 19, it's 0022. I have a script that runs and uses youtube-dl to grab video files and tosses them into /mnt/md0/YouTube where Plex can pick them up. Problem is, when YouTube-dl runs and places the videos files in the Yo...

Re: How do I change the name of a mounted array?

To correct my mistake, is it as simple as just changing the name from bacup to 'bacKup' in the mdadm.conf file and rebooting or do No. https://askubuntu.com/questions/63980/how-do-i-rename-an-mdadm-raid-array That link did the trick, thanks! Only problem I ran into was, I forgot I needed to unmount...

[SOLVED] How do I change the name of a mounted array?

I just noticed something silly. A long time ago, I created my primary RAID array (defaulted to md0 for the name) and then I created a secondary array... to back the first one up to. My backup array somehow got the following name: bacup Here is the pertinent line from MDADM.conf ARRAY /dev/md/bacup m...

Re: Can somebody recommend a backup/file sync solution?

On another note, I think I'll need to replace LuckyBackup. I verified last night that files deleted from a Samba share by Windows machines are not being deleted when LuckyBackup backs up data. They just keep accumulating on the LuckyBackup destination array. Consider simply running rsync directly t...

Re: Can somebody recommend a backup/file sync solution?

I can't help you with Luckybackup because I never used it. The description says it's a front-end for rsync though, so it should be fine for synchronization. Might be something with your settings or the permission level you run it under, I suggest to check its logs. Regarding your free space questio...

Can somebody recommend a backup/file sync solution?

Linux newbie here so please be gentle and speak as if you're talking to a 5 year old. :) Was using Linux Mint 18.x for over a year then recently switched to Mint 19. Cinnamon desktop. My /mnt/md0 array is RAID 6 and has a total capacity of 40TB with 22TB's in use. XFS file system. My /mnt/backup arr...

Re: Files copied to Samba share don't quite inherit the proper permissions

My original observation still stands. You are using force user = gene All users local and network will act as gene. What difference does it make if the group permissions allow or don't allow write? In the scenario I typed above, files that were being deposited into sub-folders from Windows machines...

Re: Files copied to Samba share don't quite inherit the proper permissions

The question I have for you is why does it matter? The reason you used "force user" in the first place was to make it so everyone ( server user and all client users ) act as one - in this case gene. EDIT : For future reference: When you post a samba question and want to display how you are set up p...
