Question about using Raider to convert single drive to RAID 1

My current setup is Mint 19 on a single 250 gig boot SSD (XFS) and a 12 drive MDADM RAID 6 (md0, XFS) and a 4 drive MDADM RAID 5 (md127, ext 4). I want to add a 2nd SSD so my boot drive will have a RAID 1 mirror in case of hardware failure. I was looking around the found an awesome program called 'r...

Set UMASK globally or per folder?

I noticed that with Mint 18.3, the default umask value was (I believe) 0002. With 19, it's 0022. I have a script that runs and uses youtube-dl to grab video files and tosses them into /mnt/md0/YouTube where Plex can pick them up. Problem is, when YouTube-dl runs and places the videos files in the Yo...

Re: How do I change the name of a mounted array?

To correct my mistake, is it as simple as just changing the name from bacup to 'bacKup' in the mdadm.conf file and rebooting or do No. https://askubuntu.com/questions/63980/how-do-i-rename-an-mdadm-raid-array That link did the trick, thanks! Only problem I ran into was, I forgot I needed to unmount...

[SOLVED] How do I change the name of a mounted array?

I just noticed something silly. A long time ago, I created my primary RAID array (defaulted to md0 for the name) and then I created a secondary array... to back the first one up to. My backup array somehow got the following name: bacup Here is the pertinent line from MDADM.conf ARRAY /dev/md/bacup m...

Re: Can somebody recommend a backup/file sync solution?

On another note, I think I'll need to replace LuckyBackup. I verified last night that files deleted from a Samba share by Windows machines are not being deleted when LuckyBackup backs up data. They just keep accumulating on the LuckyBackup destination array. Consider simply running rsync directly t...

Re: Can somebody recommend a backup/file sync solution?

I can't help you with Luckybackup because I never used it. The description says it's a front-end for rsync though, so it should be fine for synchronization. Might be something with your settings or the permission level you run it under, I suggest to check its logs. Regarding your free space questio...

Can somebody recommend a backup/file sync solution?

Linux newbie here so please be gentle and speak as if you're talking to a 5 year old. :) Was using Linux Mint 18.x for over a year then recently switched to Mint 19. Cinnamon desktop. My /mnt/md0 array is RAID 6 and has a total capacity of 40TB with 22TB's in use. XFS file system. My /mnt/backup arr...

Re: Files copied to Samba share don't quite inherit the proper permissions

My original observation still stands. You are using force user = gene All users local and network will act as gene. What difference does it make if the group permissions allow or don't allow write? In the scenario I typed above, files that were being deposited into sub-folders from Windows machines...

Re: Files copied to Samba share don't quite inherit the proper permissions

The question I have for you is why does it matter? The reason you used "force user" in the first place was to make it so everyone ( server user and all client users ) act as one - in this case gene. EDIT : For future reference: When you post a samba question and want to display how you are set up p...

[SOLVED] Files copied to Samba share don't quite inherit the proper permissions

SOLVED: The two things I changed was to move the "create mask = 0775" and "directory mask = 0775" to the Global section of Samba.conf and I changed both to 0777. Lets say I have the following files on a Windows box: c:\test\1.txt c:\test\2.txt c:\test\subfolder\3.txt c:\test\subfolder\4.txt When I c...

Re: Cron daily reboot not working

Being a newbie, and posting in the newbie section, I need spoon fed. Duly noted, I hadn't paid attention, your OP looked more advanced. What you do is this: As you already know, you can edit the root's crontab like this: sudo crontab -e and you add something like 30 11 * * * /sbin/reboot The reason...

Re: Cron daily reboot not working

I already told you what to do. I've got nothing more to add. Sorry for the confusion but I believe I -DID- edit the root's cron file: sudo crontab -e and used 55 10 * * * reboot and just now, at 10:55am, no reboot. And I also went back into -MY- cron file and called the shutdown command and no rebo...

Re: Cron daily reboot not working

Your crontab is malformed. The command you are trying to run is root reboot , which is of course not valid. So you'll want to remove that entire line and place it either into the root user's crontab (without the root part) or into a system-wide crontab (as is). I went back into crontab -e and chang...

Cron daily reboot not working [SOLVED]

Trying to get my system to do a daily, 7am reboot via cron. When I type 'crontab -e', I get this: # ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ luckybackup entries ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~$ 0 8 * * * env DISPLAY=:0 /usr/bin/luckybackup --silent --skip-critical # ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ end of lucky...

Re: Still having some weird Samba problems regarding sub-folders

I don't see anything wrong there as long as the permissions of the shared folder and everything under it allow it. I'm talking about Linux permissions here. [marinaresume] path=/mnt/md0/marinaresume comment= usershare_acl=Everyone:F, guest_ok=y For that to work /mnt/md0/marinaresume has to have per...

FireFox error when clicking on links in Synaptic Package Manager

Fresh install of Mint 19/Cinnamon. One of the first things I did after the initial setup of Mint was to install the Chromium browser and clicked on a box that popped up asking me if I'd like to use it as the default browser. I clicked 'yes' and maybe this lead to my problem? I can launch FireFox fro...
