Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

So what's the decision? As far as formatting, I think you need to start that with a new topic. Disks or Gparted work quite well and largely bypass the need for the terminal. After I did as you told me, the USB stick is back to being fully functional, thank you. I've been installing on the hard driv...

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

Okay, I tried Mint XFCE, and the performance was about the same as Peppermint.

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

Okay, doing what you suggested launched the partition tool and put Linux Mint on the stick. Now I'm formatting the stick so it should become usable again and I'll be able to test if the movie performance is better or not. Sorry this has been such a convoluted mess of problems...

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

Actually, before I asked here, I tried to solve the problem by following the steps in here: https://tecadmin.net/format-usb-in-linux/ And it seemed to work fine, except it didn't erase the contents of the stick. I removed it and then put it back in, but it won't mount. Trying df -h on the terminal d...

Right now I'm not sure what operating system you are working with.
hahah...
I'm on Linux Mint 19.2
And since the others didn't go so well, I wiped the computer, so it's not the only operating system on the laptop.

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

I have a question. I've been using a USB drive to install OS's, and after I'm done installing, I need to format the drive so I can use it again to store the movies I want to test (I only have the one USB drive). Now I tried formatting the stick with Linux Mint 19.2 and it doesn't offer the option. H...

Sure looks like it will rum Cinnamon, Xfce, or Mate pretty well. Certainly worth a try IMHO.
Okay, Mint XFCE will be my next attempt.

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

I see. Thank you. I didn't purchase the computer for this specific purpose, or at all. It was gathering dust in my family's place, so I picked it up and replaced the terrible Win 7 Starter Edition with 10, but it didn't go so well... I think it may be time for something more drastic, so I'll go ahea...

I'll stand by my suggestion to try Cinnamon, Xfce, or Mate. Does this laptop have a dual core processor or single?
How do I find out? I'm afraid I don't know anything other than what I wrote in the OP.

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

If you can, why not download a couple/few different ISOs of Mint and try each one in a live environment, preferably on a USB drive. A good way is to use MultiBoot. http://multibootusb.org/ Depending on how large your USB flash drive is, you can put several ISOs onto it and boot, then try the differ...

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

What specs do you need to know? I can find them. Normally we ask for the output of a terminal command, inxi -Fxz . I look at the BIOS date, others may, for example, look at the graphics chip. However providing that information now isn't likely to change what I've already said - Mint 18.3 xfce, Pupp...

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

Peppermint is lighter than any of the LM editions available and runs just like LM OSs. The specs you gave, 4GB RAM, 64 bit architecture, 1.65 GHz processor will run what you want with no problem. Thank you. I'll give Peppermint a try first and see how we do. It happens that I am a film buff and I i...

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

I see. What distro would you recommend? Without seeing your machine specs, the recommendations are usually either the xfce edition of Mint 18.3, or any number of other distros such as MX Linux, Emmabuntus, Puppy Linux... Certainly you would likely need to avoid Cinnamon completely. What specs do yo...

Re: Which version is best for an old laptop?

Looking at the specs you included, I'm sure it will run any of the 3 versions. I don't see how you can make that statement without looking at the inxi output. There are too many posts in the forum where machines are simply too old to run any edition of Mint 19. The OP may be much better advised to ...

[SOLVED] Which version is best for an old laptop?

Hello, I have a very old laptop that I want to use as a movie computer. In other words, I just want it to play movies/shows/anime on VLC, connected to a TV. That's all. At the moment it has Windows 10 installed, but it seems that was a bad idea. Win10 takes up so much RAM that the computer struggles...
