DIisk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter

I have a well trod ASUS M2N SLI MOBO with an AMD Athlon 64-bit CPU. A 500W PSU, 3 IDE HDDs and 2 GB RAM. This motherboard does not have a built in graphics card, therefore I have plugged a Matrox 7003-0301 REV_A PCI card. I am now trying to re-purpose this machine for a relative by trying to install...

Screen rendering problems on 17.3 Cinnamon with Matrox cards

After much browsing and experimenting I came to the conclusion that I have a graphics card problem. What I cannot figure out yet is if I am likely to find a solution or I will have to buy a new one. This is what happens: during installation from DVD I have a stable screen from where I can get the in...

Re: Why does Cinnamon need PulseAudio

I'm new around here, what is PulseAudio? PulseAudio is one (the best so far?) open source sound system available for Linux. I agree with xenopeek's assessment. Plus, what's wrong with PulseAudio, why would you not want to use it? Not (too) much wrong with it. But some of us are running Linux Mint b...

How to update GTK 3.10 to GTK 3.16

As stated in the subject, I need to update to a more recent version of GTK 3 in order to pick up some hot-of-the-press bug fixes (details here for the curious). Ideally I would like to have 3.16 side by side with 3.10 but that is probably not feasible, hence I also need a mechanism to rollback shoul...

Re: Matrox G450 dual head and the beginning of the Universe

Thank you for your reply, CIV, which is both encouraging and discouraging in equal measures. I actually managed to wane off Windows altogether (with a couple of compromises, granted). Over the years I tried Fedora, ArchLinux and Mint, the last of which gave me the best results so far on the compatib...

Matrox G450 dual head and the beginning of the Universe

First of all, let me say that I very much prefer learning and researching than being spoonfed a specific solution. Consequently my first request is for documents or links that would help me understand the evolution of (graphics card) drivers and the Linux kernel. Specifically, I would like to unders...
