Re: Dual Boot Linux Mint 19.1 and Windows 7

...... A few other thoughts. Win7 isn't going to become unusable overnight. What it's going to become, more or less overnight, is unsafe to take on the internet, as it will no longer be receiving security patches. ...... Win7 should be mostly okay to use for apps which don't touch the internet. Wha...

Re: Dual Boot Linux Mint 19.1 and Windows 7

I've caught up rather late with this discussion. Many of the practical issues and options have already been explained in helpful detail. Understanding partitioning is important: I won't add to the advice already given on that. I just thought I'd offer a couple of thoughts..... mainly because I have ...

Re: How to compress (zip) files/folders in Thunar

I guess the issue may be in part a problem of unclear wording. I wonder if the OP was confused when he could not find a "Compress" option in the right-click menu. Not everyone would realise, or be aware, that the "Create Archive" option in Thunar's right-click dropdown menu is in fact what other fil...

Re: Is Flatpak now the default for apps offered in Software Manager?

Thanks both to karlchen - for giving very clear and focused answers to my specific questions - and to Ben for the interesting comments about the AppImage option. Anything which keeps things simple is good news as far as I'm concerned. So now I have two possible ways of trying out XNViewMP .... maybe...

Re: Is Flatpak now the default for apps offered in Software Manager?

Thanks, Pjotr, that seems pretty straightforward. I'll give it a try.

I have not previously installed software in this way. Looking ahead (and on a contingency basis), if I install the .deb package and later decide XNViewMP is not for me, how then do I uninstall it cleanly?

Is Flatpak now the default for apps offered in Software Manager?

I have Mint 19.x on a couple of laptops. I have made the transition almost completely to open-source software and apps.... but until now have continued to use my favoured photo organiser/editor, FastStone, under Wine. I was considering trying out XnView MP, which is very similar. I have always relie...

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

Rather confirms that finding the right driver(s) for Broadcom wifi adapters is a bit of a lottery.

Anyhow, after 24 hours of reliable wifi connection (at last) I'm marking this thread as Solved....

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

JeremyB .... I'm not normally inclined to believe in miracles, and I don't want to be too hasty in my judgements as I've only done a ten-minute test. But - hooray! I followed your advice, have rebooted, and the wifi now simply works! No rotating icon as it struggles to connect. It's now using the w...

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

Another update (I'm still trying to gather evidence that helps to identify the problem). I've just booted up my laptop (Samsung RF511, Broadcom 4313 wifi adapter) into a live session of MX Linux, which I happened to have on a USB stick. The wireless connects instantly, rock-solid at 54 Mb/s, and ope...

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

Try the 4.15.0-62. I just updated - the kernel and various other updates including Firefox, systemd, and lots of others. Rebooted so that I'm now running 4.15.0-62. The wireless connection is useless. The icon rotates as if it is trying to make a connection, but it fails to do so. I can only connec...

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

Minux1 Thanks for your comment - but I fear it is of little help in my particular situation. My laptop is very different; it has no PCMCIA slot, so the route you were lucky enough to follow is not one that I can take. I shall try Pjotr's latest suggestion.... and maybe also await advice from others...

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

A quick update after trying all the previous kernels. Not a very encouraging picture. Here's a full summary: kernel 4.15.0.58 (the latest one installed) - intermittent and poor quality wifi as per original post; 4.15.0.55 (the one I'm now using!) - wifi connection seems pretty solid, but speed (eg w...

Re: Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

Thanks Pjotr - have just done a quick-and-dirty trial. I was running the 4.15.0.58 kernel and having wifi trouble. I have just rebooted using the previous kernel, 4.15.0.55 . Using this one, the wifi seems to be working OK - or rather the connection isn't dropping out. But again, Update Manager and ...

[SOLVED] Wifi connection intermittent and poor quality

I have Mint 19.1 XFCE installed on my Samsung laptop (which has a Broadcom wifi adapter). Most of the time I connect to the internet using a hard-wired (ethernet) cable to my NetgearDG834G v3 router. The connection is fast and reliable. I'm sure the router and the ISP/internet service are fine. My w...

Re: Timeshift - how many snapshots to keep?

That answer, Pjotr , settles the whole discussion - for me at least. Clear, logical, and pragmatic common-sense. It confirms the message that using Timeshift doesn't have to be complicated or elaborate. One (latest) snapshot as the basic minimum insurance. One other earlier one as a fail-safe precau...

Re: Timeshift - how many snapshots to keep?

..... I took a snapshot after the fresh install and maintain that snapshot as the "master" as someone called it. Then I take a daily snapshot and keep 1 - no other scheduled intervals are checked. This results in always having only two snapshots - the "master" and the last daily snapshot that refle...

Re: Timeshift - how many snapshots to keep?

Thanks Pjotr . I should have thought of checking your site before looking at all the other websites which seek to explain, or recommend, Timeshift! Seems pretty conclusive. So long as the operating system is working satisfactorily, it's only necessary to keep the latest one or two snapshots as insur...

Re: Timeshift - how many snapshots to keep?

Thanks bob466 . A daily snapshot (and an accumulation of 30 of them over a month!) is 'way more than I would consider. We clearly have very different needs or approaches. I'm still trying to pin down the critical issue: is each snapshot entirely complete and "free-standing", or does each snapshot (w...

Re: To update or not to update

There used to be a arrangement in Mint 17 and (I think) 18 where updates were marked with different ratings depending on whether they were essential (eg for security) and whether they represented fundamental changes to the system. So you could select the level of update according to your risk-tolera...

Timeshift - how many snapshots to keep?

I'm still experimenting with Timeshift. I have discovered - as others have warned - that Timeshift snapshots can rapidly fill up the drive or partition in which they are saved. So I have disabled scheduled/automatic snapshots, and I only create one (manually) before a major system update - such as a...
