Re: Flaky wifi - yet again - this has ceased to be a joke

Thanks again JeremyB.

That at least points to one thing I might need to check if future updates result in the same (automatic?) re-set of the power management. But for now, I'm a happy bunny again!

Re: Flaky wifi - yet again - this has ceased to be a joke

Well, JeremyB , I've just done all three commands - in sequence, and I think with success. According to iwconfig , power management is now off. The wifi connection is up straightaway. And a quick browse seems to suggest that it is now - once again - possible to load and access sites online via the w...

Re: Flaky wifi - yet again - this has ceased to be a joke

Aha, the cavalry rides to the rescue! Thanks, JeremyB, for joining in.

Just one (dumb) question. Is that code command you provided a single command to copy and paste? Or is it or two or three separate commands with each to be done separately after the previous one has been completed?

Re: Flaky wifi - yet again - this has ceased to be a joke

Thanks, Moem. I know your intentions are honourable, and if driven to total despair that option (a dongle) is certainly one route to try. But the perfectionist in me doesn't like to walk away from a problem. I don't myself have the level of tech expertise to troubleshoot this on my own. But I would ...

Re: Flaky wifi - yet again - this has ceased to be a joke

Further evidence - or clues, which just show the randomness of the problem. After days with no wireless connection, on my latest boot up I had the Ethernet connected.... and I then pulled out the cable. Almost immediately, the wireless connection was established. That's the good news. I even checked...

[SOLVED] Flaky wifi - yet again - this has ceased to be a joke

I'm getting to the "tearing-my-hair-out/throwing-laptop-out-of window" stage over my wifi connection. Quick summary: I have a Samsung RF511 laptop. It has a Broadcom 4313 wifi adapter. I'm running Mint 19.1 fully updated with latest (4.15.0-74) kernel. Though not directly relevant, I have a multiboo...

Re: DeVeDe - software for creating video files

Thanks to all who have replied. I've had a look at the websites of both DeVeDe and Bombono, and at some YouTube videos including the one by phd21 . Hard to decide which to choose. In a way, I'd like to pick the one which is lightest on resources and/or requires fewer dependencies : I try to avoid "c...

DeVeDe - software for creating video files

Back in the days when I used Windows 7, I used to rely on AVStoDVD to create video files for burning on to DVD. I used IMGBurn for the burning process. Now that I rely (almost entirely) on Linux Mint, I would like to use Linux-compatible software to do the same thing. XFBurn is included with my Mint...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

You do know of course that this is also found in synaptic...DAMIEN Open synaptic and copy and paste this in the "search", it should tell you if its even installed at all, or needs to be installed. bcmwl-kernel-source Yup, been there, done that. Synaptic lists it, and shows that it is not installed....

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Ah, Damien..... The plot thickens - to the point where I'm not sure what I should be looking for or checking. As I said in my post back here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=301511&p=1685132#p1685132 of a month ago, finding the right driver(s) for Broadcom wifi adapters is a bit of ...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Thanks HAWR .... I'm willing to follow any line of enquiry to see what's going on! Here (below) is the result of that first lsmod command. I should add - if it's relevant - that at the time I ran this command, the laptop is connected via wifi. I notice that the result does indeed show " samsung_lapt...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

I'm posting (again) in this thread because the problem outlined in my original post persists. What makes it really frustrating is that the wifi connection - which I described earlier as "flaky" - seems to be totally random, unpredictable and thus immensely frustrating. It is the more exasperating be...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Hello again sleeper12 , and thanks for hanging in there to figure out what's going on with my wifi connection. First, the good news. For the last couple of days, booting up (into the current system which runs the 4.15.0.65 kernel) has delivered a steady wifi connection. The connection info shows tha...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Thanks gm10 for your thoughts. It gets weirder. When I first booted up today there was no wifi. The icon dropdown list showed the local router/network SSID was visible (and seemed to suggest wireless was connected, though it wasn't). I did the terminal command. Once again I plugged in the Ethernet w...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Well, here we are again. Today, no wifi connection. So I tried that command again, this time as 'sudo'. This is what I got. I can't analyse the details. But it seems to me that it still lists the wl0 driver, and most of the other info seems the same as in my earlier post (when wifi was connecting). ...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Makes me nervous when you're not sure about the command (didn't want to bork the system inadvertently) - but here's what I got, with the wifi connection active: brian@brian-samsungRF511:~$ lshw -C network WARNING: you should run this program as super-user. *-network description: Wireless interface p...

Re: Flaky wifi connection (again) - do I blame the kernel?

Hello sleeper12 . Can't answer your question, I'm afraid: a quick search in Synaptic doesn't show either of them! And another thing. I shut down the laptop for an hour or two this afternoon, then rebooted up into my current ( 4.15.0.65 kernel) Mint system with Ethernet connected, then unplugged the ...
