Re: Help with locking up issue

The LED indicator I was referring to is on the monitor, not the PC. I completely misunderstood this, because you wrote about a unresponsive PC. I don't use KDE and cannot give help about that. Does the problem also exist, if you lock the computer manually (= start xscreensaver) and try to unlock it?

Re: Transferring Play on Linux files

The output does not show anything related to your problem, but correct the wrong ownership anyway: Mark the following command completely and make sure, that you do not miss any sign, than press ctrl-c find /home/$SUDO_USER ! -user $SUDO_USER -exec chown $SUDO_USER:$SUDO_USER '{}' \; Open a terminal ...

Re: CAps LOck DElay PRoblem

Regarding the first 2 paragraphs: As you like. Note, that I wrote, that I would never use capslock in such a case. And that should match with your golden rule.

Regarding the tutorial: Which tutorial are you referring to?

. stands for the current directory, .. for the parent directory. You can for example enter the command cd .. and you get a hierarchy level higher. if you use the option -A instead of -a they will not get shown. If they are shown they user has the ability to check their permissions. The permissions a...

Re: Context for user and root passwords

My own context is that I have to get my micro business accredited by the UKs national "Cyber Essentials" scheme. This appears to say that I shouldn't use the same password for multlpie accounts but omits to provide context as whether that includes administrator and user. I am not British, so I cann...

Re: Update not working

Switching to another mirror might help.
If you have ppas added to the system, disable them temporarily.

Both to be done with software sources tool.

I believe it installed 2500+ dependancies.
Double wow. Not even mint-meta-kde or k3b in a Cinnamon system get only partially close to it (they pull hardly 100 dependencies).

Re: Dual Booting Linux Mint 18.3 with Windows XP

This is "feature" exists since 18.1 - and it is very badly designed. The user has no information beforehand where the information gets uploaded. The question, what gets uploaded and if this is "personal info" has to be in the decision of the user, and the user has to get this information beforehand....

Re: Context for user and root passwords

I start with #2: It depends from the version of Mint. Until 18.1 a root password is set and it is identical by default with the password of the first installed user. Since 18.2 no root password get set by default. #1: If a root password is set, I strongly advice to set both passwords identically. Us...

Re: Fallback mode after update.. how to revert to last stable settings?

If you expect Linux (which distro ever) is just made with the goal to provide a zero-cost clone of XP, than you expect something impossible. With such an expectation in mind you will never get happy with any Linux. But I tell you one big problem with XP, where you will never find an argumentation ag...

Re: Updating from 18.1 to 18.3 - does drivers stay in?

The base of all 18.x variants is the same and does not get changed, if you upgrade by the update manager. Only the Mint components (depending from the currently used desktop) get exchanged, at least most of them, not all, e. g. the login screen not.

Re: CAps LOck DElay PRoblem

I did now a quick search for capslock delay. The first hit and the second both give a solution. I cannot judge about them, because I have never encountered the problem myself. - Besides that I follow the first sentence in the answer in the first link, that for such an example I would never use the c...

Re: how to shut down a process

This is again a case, where we miss the basic system specs: What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? Which kernel and which architecture? If you don't know open a terminal and enter: inxi -Szxx Paste the output here. You need to give this information for every help request i...

Re: CAps LOck DElay PRoblem

So this cannot be a hardware issue, or do you run LM 118.3 on a 10 years old device? Are you absolutely sure, that you pressed caps lock and m in the right order? Doing such kind of mistakes (e. g. writing bgu instead of bug) is not so uncommon. Because of this mistake office programs have a autocor...

Re: Install another DE without losing home

If you do not format the home partition, it will stay untouched during installation. It is not quite clear from your starting post, which desktop you have currently installed on the first laptop with 17.3. Trying to read between the lines it seems, that it is currently not Mate (perhaps Cinnamon or ...
