Re: Update Manager: Ignore updates for this package (not working)

Would it be safer to try this from a command line after boot - before the graphical i/f even starts? No, not safer and most importantly - it would not work. You should backup your user data regularly, not only if you run into a problem. I expressively encourage you to do this. But besides that: My ...

What do you miss? Note, that TS is made to restore a system, but not the user data in your home.

Re: Update Manager: Ignore updates for this package (not working)

As expected. At first correct the wrong ownership: Mark the following command completely and make sure, that you do not miss any sign, than press ctrl-c find /home/$SUDO_USER ! -user $SUDO_USER -exec chown $SUDO_USER:$SUDO_USER '{}' \; Open a terminal and enter sudo -i and press the Enter-key; you g...

Re: backup tool

The desktop is not a valid backup target. If you format the drive during installation, your desktop with all content is history. Only an external drive is a valid backup target. Besides that I recommend to simply copy your complete home to the backup drive; don't miss the hidden folders. Too many us...

Re: Kernel question

smurphos' answer is correct, but you need also to take the correct version for the architecture of your Mint. If you have the 64 bit version you must take the AMD64 version (this has nothing to do, whether you have an Intel or AMD CPU), for 32 bit take i386.

Re: Accidentally Updated Kernel / VirtualBox Broken

You missed to tell the version of VB, but it sounds, as if you use the far outdated 5.0.x. Upgrade VB to 5.1.x (preferred for stability) or 5.2.x.

Re: Desktop icons rearranged/sorted after reboot

Really interesting. I would be happy, if I could give an explanation, but I have no idea.

If the problem should reappear (in your interest I don't hope so) try it again, but only with renaming one of the 2 folders at first; out of a stomach feeling I would try it with .local.

Re: Different Menu Shortcuts per workspace?

Another option: Add another panel and place there another instance of the quick launcher applet. Now you can place the shortcuts for workspace 1 into the first applet and those for the second workspace into the other applet. (Actually you could also place 2 quick launcher applets into the same panel...

Re: How do I restore back to firefox 56.xxx?

How do I restore/return to firefox 56? Do you want to allow an attacker to execute arbitrary program code in your browser? This would happen with FF 56 because of the several severe security holes. In case you want to switch to FF ESR you should at first fire up FF 57 a last time and export your bo...

Re: Icon Fonts Disappear after Hibernation Return...

Try kernel 3.13.x (x = latest). Note that you have to load this kernel manually at boot time. For doing this press and hold the shift key immediately after powering on until you see the grub menu. Kernel 3.13 is reachable from a sun-menu.

Re: Timeshift configuration

Which junk? TS organizes the backed up files, so that it can find them properly when a restore gets done. If you play around, restore will fail and trying to restore might end with a completely unusable system.

mouse and keyboard, which do not show up anywhere in VB this time. It seems to me that on my last box, they did list under USB devices in VB. You are in error. If this would had been the case, the host would not have a working input device and you could not use the computer at all. Open a terminal ...

Re: Kernel question

Although you did not say it, but I am at 99 % sure, that your VB version is the outdated version 5.0.x. Freezes with kernel 4.13 are a known fact nad predictable. VB 5.1.x and 5.2.x have fixed this problem.

Re: SWAP release [SOLVED]

swapoff / swapon worked. It took about a minute Here you have the point. Not only using swap takes time, also moving content back to RAM takes time. Usually there is in swap the at least used content, so it is likely, that you will never need it during the session. To "clear" swap is most...

Re: Linux keeps hibernating or sleeping.

Usually for ending suspend the key press on any key should do this. For coming from hibernate state you have to power on the machine as it would be really shut down.

Re: Password resets every 30 days in Linux?

In Mint the passwords are by default without an expiring date. But if you want this, you can set this, see man passwd.
