Re: synaptic package manager doesn't respond

I cannot follow. Anyway I did a reinstall, and SPM still didn't work. :-(. So I Timeshifted back again. You reinstalled what? LM 20 or LM 21 or LM 21.1? And in this brand new install did SPM not work? Hard to believe. Did you try, how SPM behaved on the live system? Otherwise do it now. Further: You...

Why? It is after installation on the first page of the applet manager. Where else do you expect it to see?

Re: my encrypted installation doesn't boot properly!

The procedure is to backup your user data (seems to be not relevant in your case) and install new.

But before you do this, the disk error problem must get solved. This deserves a new topic.

Re: Onboard doesn't work during Login

This opens and closes the onscreen keyboard, but does not allow to change it. To my knowledge there is no way to change the online keyboard for the login screen; just as you cannot set inside of a user account, which keyboard shall get opened, if you click the respective switch in the accessibility ...

Re: folder boot full

It gives you a problem already now. You did not answer, if this is an encrypted system.

Besides that: Is this a 100 GB drive or are there also other partitions on the drive (for Windows)?

On the long run we must change the partition sizes.

Re: Linux mint 20.3 or 21.1?

LM 21.1.can be mandatory for new hardware, but this has nothing to do with the Mint specific software. But near to sure this is not the case for the OP, otherwise he would not had put his question. So what leaves are the Mint specific regressions.

Re: Timeshift PPAs, a mess?

The question about right or wrong approach is not the point. It is a matter of believe and trust. Assume anybody (who does not belong to the Mint team) creates somewhere (for example at Launchpad) a site with "Linux Mint" in the title and claims, that this site has been created by the Mint...

You wrote, that you do weekly Timeshift snapshots. So restore the system to a state, where Synaptic worked.

Re: bootloader not showing Vanessa after update from Cinnamon

The good news: The upgrade was successful, as you see yourself in 2 of the screenshots. The bad news: Mint does not support snapd and this seems to be the culprit of your problems. Boot the live system, revert the system with Timeshift to an older state, at best before you installed snapd. If not po...

Re: bootloader not showing Vanessa after update from Cinnamon

You did for sure not upgrade from Cinnamon to Vanessa. Cinnamon is the desktop and also with Vanessa you have Cinnamon after the upgrade. Grub shows you something like Mint XY Cinnamon, where XY gets replaced by the Mint version number, 21 for Vanessa, 20.3 for the old system. So look again and look...

So we know, that the hardware is not the problem.

Open Users & Groups and create a new account for testing. Reboot and log into the new account. How does it behave there?

Re: Timeshift PPAs, a mess?

- Tony George still appears at the PPAs maintainer, while it is wrong (he is no longer involved in Timeshift development, he has archived his own Timeshift GitHub, and Timeshift development, including GitHub and PPAs is under the control of Linux Mint team). This is especially crazy in your 3rd lin...

It is urgently time, that you provide the system info. Open in the menu -> system report -> system information -> click the copy button; paste in your next post.

Re: Screen turns off without reason

I recently came across some reassuring post about that forced power off, somewhere here in those LM forums. According to this post, when forced power off, the system leaves in a messy state, but there are automated cleaning and checking procedures done automatically on the next boot. Automated chec...

Re: Drive Format

You are right: you can store backups on ntfs drives - more exactly on partitions. But this has at least disadvantages, because the Linux file properties get lost on a ntfs partition, and partly you cannot use it at all (for Timeshift). But you can buy a 5 TB drive and create different partitions the...

Re: An appropriate use of Timeshift ?

(1) I should be taking regular Timeshift snapshots - I will do one each time I do an update and each week, I will do another to an external device. I do understand that snapshots cannot be copied. Regarding this and your final question: If TS creates a snapshot, it creates hard links for every file...
