Re: How to format a USB flash drive to be readable and writable

You wrote, that you formatted it at last with the usb formatting tool. This tool does not allow to create more than one partition, it formats the complete drive with the single partition. But the picture shows, that there is a mini partition and 97 % of the drive is unused. So this does not match. T...

Re: Hopping up the kernel family ladder - things to consider before leaping?

Nothing is impossible, but the likelihood, that an application breaks because of another kernel is not far away from zero. What you should do before switching the kernel is to inform yourself (and do a test about that), how you can load an older kernel in case of problems. Knowing that beforehand is...

Re: How to format a USB flash drive to be readable and writable

Don't give us so much information, we can hardly understand it. Sarcasm off: We need details. What does not mountable mean? What exactly did you try? What error message or such did you receive? Did you plug out and in the drive? Did you tryy different ports? What does the Disks tool tell abo...

Re: Apparently, I forgot how to verify a gpg signature with only a .sig file and the archive

What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? If you don't know open a terminal and enter: inxi -Sz Paste the output here. You need to give this information for every help request in every thread. Do not forget this in the future. Open software sources -> keys -> mark the key and...

Re: Can not start Cinnamon

The obvious answer is, that any change, that you did after the used TS snapshot gave the problem. Possibly one of the applied updates. Apply them again, but for level 3 & 4 only one by one and do a reboot after each update step. As you know now, how to revert it is not a big problem.

Please use the reply button at the bottom of the page instead of doing a full quote. And even more important: Answer all questions, not only a part of it.

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

Might be; a look into the data sheet for your processor (should be available on the Intel page) should clear this up. BTW: I have core i5 an Nested Paging works. Another thought: Even if the cpu supports a feature it is still possible, that the motherboard does not.

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

Let me begin with the simple part: Until 18.2 there are VB guest additions preinstalled in Mint; a terrible mistake, which has been corrected in 18.3. So older advices for removing in a Mint guest the guest additions are not more current for 18.3. (Otherwise I would have told you.) So here is no pro...

The labels will be added on this place, but you cannot replace the hard coded names with them.

Re: mouse focus delay

I did another look (after knowing the desktop) and there seems to be a hidden option. Install dconf-editor and navigate in the left pane to org -> cinnamon -> desktop -> wrm -> preferences. There is the value auto-raise-delay. I did never test this (I use the default focusing mode), but it might do ...

On this place you see always the hard coded name given by the manufacturer; you cannot change it.

Ahem, this link says nothing else than this is wrong. At first, because 4 GB RAM is obviously more than 768 MB, and at second: not for production systems.

Re: All Apps Experiencing random freezes

Create a fresh new user account and compare there. If this does not give a difference, boot the live system and compare there.

Besides that: What is the meaning of having 4 swap partitions?

Re: [SOLVED] Panel Previews Missing

You clicked on the wrong place. My advice was: If this happens again right click the window list (b some users called incorrectly taskbar) -> configure. The window list is not the panel. It is inside the panel. The popup you show does only appear, if you right click on an empty place in the panel. I...

Re: Update manager showing levels not requested

What you see are security and / or kernel updates. In the options of the preferences they are by default set to show and if there are such updates available, than the old behavior of the update manager was simply wrong: Either there do not currently exist any updates (of those, which are set to disp...

Re: Unexpected shutdowns

Does this happen in battery mode only? Possibly the battery is old and reports wrong information to the system. Try to bring (at least a part of) the capacity back: Let the laptop run in battery mode. Short before the battery is empty plug the power cable in and let it load the battery to 100%. Only...
