Re: Canot Delete Files in Places Window

I suspect there may be permissions problems if you have loaded data from a back up. You need to check ownership and permissions. If you are unfamiliar with this check out the chown, chgrp and chmod commands.

Re: Best Laptops for Linux Conversion?

In the last 3 -4 years I have changed the OS on a number of laptops from Windows to Mint.Various models of the DELL Vostro and HP255 have had relatively problem free switchovers although setting up the WiFi has been challenging on a few older ones. This forum has been useful with this issue. Really ...

Re: Firefox 57.0.1 on Mint 13 System

There appear to be valid business reasons for staying on Mint 13 for the next 6/12 months. I strongly doubt, that there can exist any rational reason to stay with a system full of security leaks. The time for LM 13 ended already 9 months ago. Currently he is porting a major chunk of software from P...

Firefox 57.0.1 on Mint 13 System (Solved)

We have someone here still sitting on Mint 13.There appear to be valid business reasons for staying on Mint 13 for the next 6/12 months. Obviously updates are no longer issued. I looked at Firefox and it is sitting on 52.0.2. Can I update this to the latest, 57.0.1 and what would be the best way to ...

Re: Microsoft SQL Server

We have been using MySQL in anger for about two years but started development about three years ago. I had been using it at a previous gig over five years ago. A consultant did suggest MariaDB and it was looked at but not taken further as some issue cropped up! I doubt M/S SQL will be a real contend...

Razer Valerie

I have seen a brief write up on this (very expensive) new laptop. It has three fold out screens. There was nothing about the OS which I suspect is Windows. Rather than a continuum it would be real cool 8) to me to run Mint 17.3 (for ongoing support/development), Mint 18 (for cutting edge) and Window...

Re: Microsoft SQL Server

One issue I have had is that the MySQL CLI uses my.cnf (a configuration file) whereas the visual tool 'MySQL Workbench' does not but uses its own C/C++ libraries. This caused inconsistent behaviour until understood and is pretty bad practice by the MySQL development people IMHO. The other problem ha...

Re: Microsoft SQL Server

The main SQL server I use is MySQL (M/S < 10%) but there have been a couple of horrendous problems which were logged years ago and remain unfixed. TBH in my previous job (five years ago) we changed from M/S to MySQL as we hit problems and M/S wanted £££££ to talk. So I will watch developments with i...

Re: Notifications on new Mint versions

I don't think there is any need to jump to a new version as soon as it is released. .... No kiddin'. I'd never be the first on the block. You know how in Windows savvy users wait until the first Service Pack of a new release before installing? It's just like that. Ditto - SQL Server although I beli...

I downloaded and installed it, still no good. Am I missing something, do I need to install it in Libre office, if so how.] The plugin I linked to is just for a spell checker in FireFox. Is it working in FireFox? For Libre Office I use this extension to be able to get a UK English spell checker http...
