Re: KDE Mint insists on formatting external hard drive - but I don't want that!

Hi phd21 a.o., The other day, a good friend of mine put enclosure + external hard drive through the wringer, so to speak. The thing is that neither my system nor my friend's are able to determine what to play files on the hard drive with. The friend subsequently put a real effort in, so as to try an...

Re: KDE Mint insists on formatting external hard drive - but I don't want that!

daret: If it is not working at all, than the drive could be broken. It definitely isn't broken. I can feel it spinning, with my hand flat on the enclosure. Mute Ant: has it been on a Windows system? No, never. Mute Ant: Put it back in the hardware it came out of Impossible. Because of the original ...

KDE Mint insists on formatting external hard drive - but I don't want that! <SOLVED (sort of)>

Hello all, A couple of days ago, my brand-new HDD external hard drive enclosure arrived. I own a number of external hard drives, some of which can't be accessed in the usual way. Hence the enclosure. My regular laptop runs KDE Mint 17.3. My brand-new enclosure's brand is CIT, which I purchased from ...

Re: Some reasons to avoid Windows 10

Paradox: you'll need a laptop/desktop to install Linux - but any brand you'll buy has Windows standard on board. Windows 10 most likely. Microsoft still has an overweening monopoly, so how on earth (and, probably, WHERE on earth) does one acquire a computer WITHOUT Windows on it? Veerstryngh Thynner

Re: Anyone else using Linux and Windows simultaneously?

Thank you very much for your stories. An interesting read. CaptainKirksChair writes: My wife is really ready to dump Windows 7 on her old HP computer. Privately, Windows has driven me bonkers, in the past. For every issue sorted, three fresh ones in place. And very few applications worked, I don't e...

On Linux Mint & Zoom R16, briefly

Hello all,

My question is going to be short and snappy: I'm curious as to whether there are more Mint Forums regulars owning a Zoom R16 and using it in Mint. My regular platforms are KDE Mint 17.3 "Rosa" on my laptop and KDE Mint 17.0 on my desktop.

Re: Three concise questions about headphone socket dual functionality

Hi all, Question 1 has now been solved. Thanks again, ZedeN! And the solution to Question 3 I just found myself, pleasingly :) : If your laptop has been equipped with a combo jack as well - then, yes, you, too, may now be able play/record your electric guitar in Mint! Read here how : https://forums....

Three concise questions about headphone socket dual functionality

OS: KDE Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Laptop: Lenovo G585 Hi all, There was I, assuming, until very recently, that my laptop's headphones socket is invariably just for plugging in a headset. But not so, it seems. Or not always so, at any rate, as has just transpired. I have been reliably informed that on curren...

Re: What I don't know (yet) about laptops

Thanks very much for your suggestion, Portreve. I'll most certainly look into that. But on another topic I think a slight misunderstanding has got in the way. This is what you wrote: You can't "convert" a headphone jack. It is what it is, hardware-wise. I agree. But it's not that, really, what I see...

Thanks very much for your kind contribution, Amil, but it doesn't seem to work that way in KDE Mint. Again, what I see when I right-click the panel is > Panel > Panel Options > Add Panel > pop-up menu offering Default Panel/Empty Panel/Group Pamnel; in Task Manager Settings, a pop-up menu appears wi...

What I don't know (yet) about laptops

Hello all, A couple of months ago, my auxiliary laptop died on me. It was a side-tool that contained my musical arsenal (notation software, virtual orchestras, voice changer) and already old when I obtained it. However, it was equipped with a headphone socket and, next to that, a mic/line input - a ...

Help! Audio Manager (loudspeaker icon in bottom taskbar) gone...

Hi All, First of all, I'm currently running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa on my laptop. Some time ago, I somehow lost my Audio Manager (i.e the small loudspeaker icon at the bottom right of my screen). I don't know how I managed that, exactly, but as a consequence I can't adjust headphone/speaker audio volum...

Re: upgrading get-iplayer

Hi phd21! I'm glad to report that obsolete get-iplayer v2.83, formerly on my laptop, has successfully been replaced with v3.01, thanks to you, phd21! To that end, I used the PPA both you and Hoser Rob kindly provided: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jon-hedgerows/get-iplayer sudo apt-get update sudo apt...

I also appreciate your advice on iPhone connectivity. Sadly, though, using mobile phones (i- or otherwise) is not an option, for some people. I'm one of those - but not of own volition...

Re: How-to "help" someone use a computer.

I was in my mid-thirties, the first time ever I touched a computer. A clunky, massively heavy desktop with DOS on it. From then on, I moved through all MS Windows incarnations (except Vista), until Windows drove me virtually bonkers. At that point, a friend introduced me to Linux and kindly installe...

upgrading get-iplayer (SOLVED)

Hello all, I just discovered that get-iplayer badly needs an upgrade. The latest get-iplayer release is v3.01, as far as I'm aware - but the one in my system is 2.83 (which, not wholly unexpectedly, doesn't respond at all to my requests). I'm currently running Mint 17.3 "Rosa", on my regular laptop....

Re: Your computers and Operating systems

Hi all, When I was born, only wealthy and powerful multinationals could afford computers. The company my dad worked for, for almost half a century, wasn't quite in that league, but still owned a computer that occupied a large room. It ran with punch card "harmonicas", I think. At some stage a huge, ...
