Re: How to ALLOW standby during video playback

Sorry that I did not mention the player. Not sure what my friend used, i guess VLC. I tested on my laptop yesterday with VLC and found the option in advanced settings. BUT: although I switched it off, saved config, closed VLC and restarted, it prohibits screensaver/standby - my indicator is the Cinn...

How to ALLOW standby during video playback

A friend uses her laptop on battery to watch videos and regularly falls asleep doing so. In 17.x a bug(?) prevented the "prevent screensaver/standby while playing media" feature - which was what she needed: When screensaver timeout kicked in and blackened screen (without locking it yet), she just ha...

Mint Sound Control does not switch to Headset, pavucontrol does

I think I've found a bug in Mint 18 (Cinnamon at least): I use a Bluetooth headset (Plantronics Voyager UC2). It's recognised fine after pairing, and displayed in Sound Controls. If I switch playback to the headset by clicking the big image of it (it's using handsfree profile), it's used fine, all a...

Re: Installing Samba Server in Mint 18

Setting "security = share" will guarantee that smbd will not run. There is no such thing as "security = share" in version 4 of Samba. It didn't exist in later releases of Version 3 either but since 4.3.9 of samba instead of simply ignoring an unrecognised value it aborts the starting of the service...

Re: Installing Samba Server in Mint 18

Thanks a lot! Meanwhile I purged samba-common and installed samba (and the packages that were installed on my system and were removed by the first command): apt purge samba-common apt install mint-meta-cinnamon samba nemo-share smbclient cifs-utils casper lupin-casper I opened a bug: https://bugs.la...

Re: Installing Samba Server in Mint 18

I also ran into this but installing package samba did not solve my issue since it yields an error during installation: $ sudo apt-get install samba --install-recommends Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut. Statusinformationen werden eingelesen.... Fertig »samba« ist...

Sorry, I meant mdm. OK, then it will be a regression from my "update all" policy selection. Thanks.

Re: User&Groups dialog stalls when changing "normal" user's password

No, I can't reproduce it there. I tried in my normal system again: Dialog only hangs (every time) if I enter something (doesn't matter wherther it's the correct password or something else) in the "Current Password" field. E.g. if dialog opens up, I click to 1st new pw, enter something, click elswher...

Re: User&Groups dialog stalls when changing "normal" user's password

Thanks! Strange, I just tried #2 again, still the same. Standard Mint 18 Cinnamon, slightly tweaked but no changes that should affect this. Using proprietary NVIDIA driver. Any chance it's caused by it? (I doubt it.) Any hint how to debug it?

[Solved] User&Groups dialog stalls when changing "normal" user's password

I think I've found two bugs in Mint 18 (Cinnamon at least). Steps to reproduce: (1) USER CANNOT SET PASSWORD IF NO INITIAL PASSWORD IS SET create a "Standard" (non-admin) user (no password is required if one uses "Users and Groups" to create the new user switch user, login as new user (no password, ...

Re: [Solved] Firefox updated in Ubuntu but not in Mint - Why

Thank you for all your comments. So as I read them, it wasn't a dumb question after all: I think that it is vital for any software to apply security fixes quickly. After some quality assurance of course, but I see no reason to postpone FX fixes that already passed Ubuntu QA. So either some mint pack...

[Solved] Firefox updated in Ubuntu but not in Mint - Why?

I'm not sure where to post, so I rather ask here. Before I start: I did read and do understand http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=31954&start=0 . However, since Mint 17.3 uses Ubuntu 14.04.1 packages and there is a new Firefox containing security fixes (http://packages.ubuntu.com/trust...

I found that automatic sleep doesn't work (on a Lenovo B50-70 Laptop) in 17.1 64bit Cinnamon if "Lock the computer when put to sleep" is UNticked. I consider this a bug.

Mint 17.1: backlight flickers on Radeon RS690M

I installed Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64bit on an older Toshiba Satellite A210-109. The screen backlight flickers at random intervals (sometimes 5 times per second, sometimes once per 5 seconds, irregular pattern, once per second average). I recorded samples and put some diagnostic files here: http://aboei...

Nevertheless, after installing 01.org Ubuntu 14.04 drivers in Mint 17.1 Cinnamon, the installer tells "Distribution not supported"! How to persuade it?

[SOLVED] Bluetooth firmware loading error in dmesg (ath3k)

Running Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64bit default install on Lenovo B50-70. BT not working. What should I do? dmsg yields "Error in firmware loading" - is it the correct driver after all (ath 3 k vs. ath 9 k)? # dmesg | grep -i blue [ 12.536348] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.17 [ 12.536367] Bluetooth: HCI device and...
