Re: multi-boot with EFI systemd boot

... My script is named zz-update-systemd-boot in both directories. My script is just something I modified from gisthub after reading https://blobfolio.com/2018/06/replace-grub2-with-systemd-boot-on-ubuntu-18-04/ Still not sure systemd boot was worth the trouble as grub2 does have options when thing...

Re: multi-boot with EFI systemd boot

Thanks to all of you for your replies - this gives me some stuff to research and explore. Today I was able to use the Arch link above to enable systemd boot for a dual booted HP laptop about 3 years old. It has ArcoLinux and MX Linux on it, and was previously dual booted using grub in an EFI setting...

Re: Xterm oddity

Here's a thread on this issue on an Ubuntu forum, though rather dated (2010). At that point they seem to have found the problem to be associated with some keyboard shortcut. Anyway, the odds of it having anything to do with your issue aren't stellar, but f.y.i. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.ph...

Re: Xterm oddity

Hmm. I recently upgraded from 19.1 to 19.2 (Mate). The only way I can get a terminal to open in the root directory is to launch the terminal as root. If by "menu" you are referring to the startup application menu, right click on the xterm icon and select "Edit properties" and the...

multi-boot with EFI systemd boot <solved>

Hello. I have just ordered a new System76 laptop which will come pre-installed with PopOS 19.04. It's an Adder WS with two SSD drives and one HDD. I currently have a System76 Oryx Pro with a single SSD and one HDD, which triple boots LinuxMint 19.2, ArcoLinux 19, and PopOS 19.04. The Oryx Pro boots ...

Recent flack over the future of Mint

Just wanted to post a link to "Big Daddy Linux" youtube weekly discussions on Linux topics. A big one was in regard to how the demise of Antergos, et al, bled over to problems with a possible future of Mint. I'm posting the link to the youtube feature, but you need to advance to roughly 1:...

An addendum, just found this on youtube from Joe Collins, in regard to Mint. Interesting:

Re: "Linux Mint Turns Cinnamon Experience Bittersweet"

Wow. From announcing the demise of Antergos and Scientific Linux distributions, very narrowly aimed at two different niches of Linux users - users wanting a simple install process for Arch (Antergos), or users wanting a straight-forward Linux foundation for scientific applications - he waxes on a si...

Re: Can't refresh Update Manager

Thanks, Marziano! That fixed the google earth sources issue. I'll see within a few days if that was also causing the graphical Update Manager to burp.

Much appreciated.

Can't refresh Update Manager (Google Earth related & more)

I also have this issue. When I do a refresh in Update Manager, it immediately returns "Your system is up to date". If I get out of Update Manager and run the update process from the terminal, I get the updates successfully: curt@curt-linuxmint19 ~ $ sudo apt-get update [sudo] password for ...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19 and sudo after upgrade <SOLVED>

Hello. I found the problem I mentioned above regarding "sudo". The mintupdate process generates a file "/etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate", which gets added to the sudoers file upon login. Here are the contents of "/etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate": # Allow any user to check for new s...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19 <SOLVED>

Thanks to the Mint team for an issue-free update from 18.3 Cinnamon to 19 Cinnamon. My only issue after the update is that I don't get a response when I enter "sudo <command>" or "sudo -i". If, after entering "sudo -i" and getting no prompt, if I enter my password (it u...

Re: Am I the only one who still plays CDs?

... When CDs first came out, they sounded grainy to me, like somebody had broke the music up into small chunks and just gave you the chunks. Which is, in fact, exactly the situation. ... This has all to do with the quality of the D/A converter, which in the beginning was mediocre at its best. And s...

Re: Am I the only one who still plays CDs?

And as xenopeek mentioned above, there really is a resurgence of LP turntables coming to the fore. Not only that, but they're considerably cheaper than they were back in the day (40+ years ago). High quality Marantz turntables, with all sorts of tonearm counterbalances to secure the tonearm with as ...

Re: Am I the only one who still plays CDs?

No. I still use a DVD/CD external drive on my iMac desktop, mainly for my wife, who likes MacOS and the convenience of easy music/video conversion between iTunes and optical media. I just recently attached a USB turntable to the Mac so she could easily create CD's from LPs for use in her car. I'm ol...

Re: Linux Mint based on Devuan at 2019.

There are several distros other than Devuan which offer non-systemd alternatives, which I'm sure folks here know. As I'm primarily a desktop user these days, I don't care in an emotional fashion as long as the systems work well for me. I do like tinkering with some of the non-systemd alternatives ju...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

Sounds to me that Intel says that "their" problem is now "our" problem. (Expletive deleted. lol) After reading David Woodhouse's above linked rebuttal a few more times I would myself actually more go with a "Linus is full of it" theory for now. The main stated technica...

I would still have liked to have seen LMDE 3 released in what I consider a time appropriate implementation, but that ship has sailed. Yeah, patience is required. We've been more and more focused on LMDE3 since Stretch was released more than 6 months ago. But LMDE2 is still supported. I ended up mov...

Re: Meltdown, Spectre: How they failed, what do we know?

I haven't read anything about AMD behaving the same way as Intel on these CVEs. I imagine that AMD is complicite in keeping this quiet also, but are they AS guilty of our mistrust as Intel? I am thinking right now that I might move when I build my next system to AMD, a Threadripper if and when I ca...
