Re: Best Distro For Old Computers

I have a couple machines with single core AMDs (a sempron and turion) that seem to have less cpu usage spikes when they run Lubuntu. However I like the look of Mint a little better. I have tried LM xfce several times, but the processor usage will spike to 30% just from circling the mouse cursor arou...

Re: VIA Nano CPU and VIA Onboard Graphics

Hello Mr_Reed, it is easier to look for possible linux support, if you could name a computer model or the processor and graphic card. Well to be more specific I am asking about the VIA Nano L2007 that is included on this http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/motherboard_view.asp?productid=813&proname=MVB...

VIA Nano CPU and VIA Onboard Graphics

Is there a place where I can confirm support for a VIA Nano processor and the associated VIA onboard graphics? The processor seems to be fairly modern as it is a 64 bit unit, and the motherboard is supposed to be Win 8 and 10 compatible. In the past, I have tried to use LM with VIA C7 and wasn't rea...

No because it appears to have a driver loaded, and it connects at my university with no problem. Do I need an updated driver?

Try this: 1. Disable power management for your wifi chipset: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/internet#TOC-Disable-power-management-for-the-wireless-card (item 2.1, right column) When I attempted this, I get an error saying something like "xed cannot handle admin locations&qu...

I think I already have "CE" and not "EE" As I said, it's weird that it works at school with no issues, but just won't connect to my home connection. It's too much trouble to change routers when all my other devices work fine. It seems I need to try the power management command in...

Re: Kernel Updates, is it advisable?

Maybe I missed someone already posting this, but you can hide those unwanted kernel updates (and if you have everything sorted out and working there isn't a logical reason to update your kernel unless a serious vulnerability turns up). Open the Update Manager, then 'Edit', then 'Preferences', and u...

So if you are running a fresh install of 18.3 unless you have specifically chosen to install a 4.4.0-x kernel you are not technically using a LTS kernel.

According to the https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3480 18.3 should be LTS. Maybe we're not talking about the same thing?

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown and Spectre

I'm using 18.3 xfce. In previous versions I believe 18.1 or 18.2, I never had the update manager constantly nagging me about updating kernels. I have always been under the impression that kernel updates will break the computer especially for someone like myself that is somewhat new to the Linux worl...

Re: Kernel Updates, is it advisable?

It is. Those updates - inside of a series) can fix a security leak, they can also fix a stability issue. If the maintainers provide an update, the update manager will find it after some time and consequently does offer it. LTS does not mean, that the original packages will be good until the end of ...
