Re: Tiny Text in Web Browser Only (MBP Retina)

Do you have experience doing this with the retina display? Basically - is VB going to offer the same support Parallels does? B/c like I said, the desktop is surpassing my expectations right now. Looks almost as good as OS X with my current settings. I was running this all on a MBPro 15 Retina. Work...

Re: Tiny Text in Web Browser Only (MBP Retina)

This is likely a Parallels issue to address on their board or customer support. I know a free solution that works. Download this -- https://www.virtualbox.org/ -- which is the open source variant of Parallels. Follow instructions on YouTube. Know that most Linux distros will show up in a tiny window...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

"Trolls crave attention, and they care not whether it is positive or negative. They see the Internet as a mirror in which they can gaze in narcissistic rapture." Many trolls pride themselves on just how long they can keep a troll thread going, aiming at creating the longest thread in a forum, and t...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

did you notice I was the individual who broke the news on this board of the MintBox? No. Clem posted first. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2760 I was unaware of Clem's blog post. That doesn't mean I wasn't the first person to break this news on the board . Even if someone else did on the board, that ...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

We don't expect everything to be intuitive -- that's why we provide you with documentation. Read it! Duh! Yes. Doc. Let's talk about that for a moment, shall we? What got me to Linux? YouTube. How is that possible? On YouTube you can watch people install Linux in VirtualBox. Why do I do that...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

Go to any blog on how to install any program... This is Windows mentality. The world of software, where you have to scour the internet for installers, how-to's, updates and such.. This is how everything works now. Windows, Mac, Linux. Or really it's one way it can and does work. 1. On a PC I wanted...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

You do a whole bunch of things -- like using RC distros -- RC to me is an old school Cola. So when a distro is labeled KDE RC... it means to me what it will mean to most people: nothing . I Wiki'd KDE and it didn't really tell me so much. A bunch of developers of the KDE group. Whatever. Had I seen...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

Greetings NChewie, Thank you for trying to help me. Before I address your likely sound advice I wish to first make sure there's an understanding of the entire situation. Firstly, this thread has drifted into areas slightly broader than upgrading. It could really be renamed The Mysteries of Installin...

Re: PEBKAC

I'd like to see your upgrade process. You are doing something consistently wrong. If that was your takeaway, let me rephrase: what's consistantly wrong is the suggestion that the terminal is kosher and easy by helpful bloggers and helpful board types. To particulary advanced users, absolutely. To M...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

My point was that it's hard for a newbie user to understand why Mint isn't updating them to the current version of Libre... Actually, the average newbie user doesn't know the difference, or even care. You're conflating average computer user with average Mint newbie . From what I've seen, your avera...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

Hah, and have you looked at the terms Apple uses for items on it's motherboards? It can't even call the ROM chip on it the CMOS, but a PRAM, nor the BIOS program a BIOS, preferring some other term. Heck, they won't even call it a motherboard, but a "logic board". You really picked the wrong compari...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

They could have dumbed it down a little more, I suppose - but they'd have had to write it in crayon . I can be a fan of sarcasm -- :) -- but you missed my point. Or I didn't explain it properly. What's confusing isn't the terms themselves. Still = stable and slightly dated. Fresh = newer and less s...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

The given example was not a single case, in August '14 MS had to withdraw 4 updates. And so on, and so on.... That is the opposite of working fine. I was speaking in general, but fair enough. Mac rarely pulls an update, though lately iOS has been trying to catch up to MS. Know that I followed Linux...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

That current offered version WILL be pushed out in the official Mint repos, after such time as the Mint crew determine that it's good enough to push out . It's basically one extra layer of quality control. Thus, the procedure for updating to the latest version of LibreOffice that Mint supports is a...

did I say personally enough in that sentence  Wait. You mean there is your take on this issue? Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

The above is the answer I would give to a request suitable for a very low level of experience.. I was under the impression you wanted more than that. If I was mistaken then I heartily appologise. Absolutely no apology needed, Sir. This is a platform issue, not a board user shortcoming. I know it so...

Re: The Mysteries of Upgrading

WinterTroubles, Cosmo, and all other contributors to this thread, I thank you. I do appreciate your time and didn't intend for these simple questions to require so many words and responses. Since Distrowatch lists Mint as the premier Linux via downloads, by leaps and bounds, and since Mint is oft re...

Re: Thank You Apple! Or Why I love Mint even more.

When I first saw the screenshots of Yosemite I wasn't sure about it. I thought it looks kind of dopey. But I did end up upgrading someone's computer to Yosemite and it went well and the computer is running great. Mind you, I'm using Mavericks on my main machine and haven't spent much real time on Y...
