How do I connect a bluetooth device

How do I pair and connect a bluetooth device using the GUI? In System Settings - Bluetooth I can't see any option to scan for devices.

This problem is probably new since upgrading to LM20 but I can't be sure.

How to compare directories over a network with nemo

I can compare a local directory to a directory on the network with meld.

Why can't I use nemo-compare to do the same? I don't get the compare later and compare with entries in the right-click menu in nemo.

Trouble running DisplayCAL

I installed DisplayCAL but trying to run it gives me this

The author claims it's a problem for the wxPython package maintainer. Any ideas?

Thanks for that tip.

What genius put that setting in Preferences->General instead of next to the screen rotation settings?

No. It doesn't do that. I backed up to a USB stick without any further configuration and just got a copy of my system directories.

Thanks. Once I twigged that the daily/weekly/etc settings are tick boxes, not radio buttons, it became clear how to turn snapshots off

Re: Acer battery won't charge

The other odd thing I have noticed is that the setting 'When the battery is critically low' has only one option: Do nothing. For others finding this thread, that turned out to be the key. The battery was just being allowed to go to zero with no suspend or hibernation. From there, it would not charg...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

When you installed Mint 19, if you didn't want Timeshift, all you had to do was to open your Update Manager, left click on Edit, then left click on Preferences, then under Interface, UNCHECK the choice "show a warning if system snapshots are not set up". Then left click the word Apply. Th...

Re: Acer battery won't charge

Not sure what details would be relevant. That's why the question about how to troubleshoot ie where to start? The machine is called Aspire SW5-271-69LN which has a battery called LGC AC14C81. I am running LM18.3 with kernel 4.13.0-39-generic #44~16.04.1-Ubuntu. Cinnamon. 64-bit. Of course, now I've ...

Acer battery won't charge

The battery on my Acer Switch 12 2-in-1 won't charge when LM is running. It's just come back from the repairers who put in a brand new battery under warranty and it works fine under Windows. But in LM the charge level stays static when I'm using the machine with the charger plugged in. I think it al...

Open Nemo, as root, and then do Edit > Preferences > List View Thanks, but like I say, it doesn't stick. If I close the preferences dialogue then re-open i...

Re: screen auto rotation stopped?

I have the opposite problem, rotates when I do not want it to. I have looked and cannot find the setting to turn off auto-rotation. I am using 18.2 Beta, Cinnamon. Same here. Boots to portrait, in which mouse usage is very difficult, and there's no way to change to landscape using touch screen AFAI...

Re: Trouble booting with kernel 4.4

Two months later and it's still not fixed. Every time I change a setting it seems to make it better but then plays up again. I think there are two (or more) issues which may or may not be related. And BTW I do get the same effects with older kernels but the older it is the more reliable it seems. 1....

Re: Note of Caution re: EFI Install

I had similar issues with an Acer machine which refused to boot to anything but Windows. Attempts to re-order the boot sequence with efibootmgr failed but the 'next boot' option would stick, so I had a script run: #! /bin/bash efibootmgr -n 0 and called it from Startup Applications. Boot option 0 is...

No screen rotation on Acer laptop

Very excited about support in 18.1 for automatic screen rotation but it's not working here. dmesg reports Acer BMA150 accelerometer as /devices/virtual/input/input15 which suggests its supported but desktop does not rotate. Any suggestions for troubleshooting? Specs here: https://gist.github.com/ano...

Thanks for the swift reply. clocksource=tsc in the grub commandline got it going one time - will mark as solved if that's repeatable over a few days.

Trouble booting with kernel 4.4

I upgraded to LM18. Sometimes it boots but mostly it doesn't - just hangs with the logo and the little dots underneath stop flashing. I can boot reliably with the 3.19.0-32 kernel but not with any 4.4.0-x kernels. If I turn off quiet in grub I get a load of register/stack contents and a message like...
