Re: Laptop GPU limiting me. eGPU worth it?
I've taken a look at the specs of your Pavilion dv5. Unfortunately, that computer only has an eSATA and USB 2.0 ports. Most external GPUs I've seen on the market use Thunderbolt 3 (or higher) and/or USB-C. eSATA was meant for external hard drives, and USB 2.0 doesn't come close to the data transfer ...

Re: How many distros do you have loaded?
At the moment, two. I have some version of Linux Mint installed on three computers, all at least ten years old: a Dell Optiplex desktop, a Dell Latitude notebook, and a Lenovo netbook. On a System76 laptop, I have Pop_OS. This number may soon increase to three. The version of Mint currently on the L...

Re: Which distro do you use as a daily driver?
Of the five machines of mine that run some form of GNU/Linux, 4 of them are on Linux Mint. That includes the one I'm using to write this post, a Dell Optiplex 760 circa 2009(?) that is still what I browse the web with 75% of the time, so I count it as a daily driver. The fifth is a System76 Darter P...

Re: What distro would you use for your main daily driver other than Mint?
On four of my computers, I run Mint, and still like it. I even still run 32-bit Mint Xfce on my old Lenovo netbook, and probably will until Mint 19's EOL or the machine bites the dust, whichever comes first. On the fifth, a System76 Darter Pro, I run Pop_OS, the System76-curated Ubuntu derivative th...

Re: Birthday gift for me [System 76 Darter Pro]
MurphCID, thanks for your comments on this machine, as I had wondered how System76's new Coreboot models work out in real life. I bought the previous-gen non-Coreboot Darter Pro last year while it was on sale. Even though I read that this version is a little more friendly with other distros, I've st...

Re: My elderly Acer Aspire One
This netbook (D260) used to be able to watch videos, even play some small games just fine! What happened? I'm not sure about games. However, when video sites like YouTube changed video codecs from H.264 to the CPU-intensive VP8/VP9, the Atom-based netbooks just choked. In order to get my Atom-based...

Re: Mint 17 End of life
Ah, Qiana and the rest, we loved you so... Mint 17 was my first serious foray into the world of Linux. Although most of my Mint machines have since been upgraded to 18 or 19, I had maintained 17.3 on my Optiplex 760 for its stability as a Dropbox client and local network server, as well as my primar...

Re: SSD and Mint ROCKS !!
A few months ago, I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N4110 with an SSD. My boot times went from ~35-40 seconds to less than 15. It's like I jumped from a second-gen i3 (the laptop's actual processor) to a 5th or 6th gen. The dots on the Linux Mint splash screen barely cycle colors once-- ...

Re: Old Old Songs
I don't know the typical age demographic of this message board, but I know in certain circles "older" music means stuff from the 70s and 80s. In fact, of late I regularly hear people talk about some contemporary piece of Pop music that "they grew up with" or that "came out ...

Re: My journey of replacing my HDD with an SSD
JerryF, I was wondering if you've noticed any performance boost or improved battery life with the SSD upgrade. I had just finished doing the same type of upgrade for my Dell Inspiron laptop earlier this afternoon. (I didn't have anywhere near the problems you had with Clonezilla, but I attribute tha...

Re: Software that you would like to have for Linux
Way back when this thread started, I would have wished for a native version of Cakewalk Sonar (the music software). I don't need that now, thanks to Bitwig Studio; it's not free, but for me it's worth the money, is developed by some former Ableton Live programmers, and it runs on Mint 18 (or almost ...

In addition to the aforementioned Joe Collins, Spatry, Nixie Pixel, Chris Were and Linux Gamer (and watching Lunduke's "Linux Sucks..." presentations for a candid view on the state of the platform over the past few years), I have also watched some videos from these fellows: Switched to Lin...

Re: Worldwide OS Share Statistics
Well, according to data I just made up five minutes ago, OS usage in my household is 50% Android-Linux, 25% Mac OS X, and 25% GNU+Linux. And that of my household, with the same anecdotal accuracy: 30% OS X 35% iOS 25% GNU+Linux (pretty much all me, except when my child and I play a round of Open Ar...

Re: What would you use if Mint wasn't available?
For older machines : Lubuntu . It almost went on my Lenovo Ideapad, to be honest, but Mint Xfce's richer feature set won out ever so slightly. For newer machines : I might play with Manjaro XFCE . I've become somewhat fond of XFCE these past couple of years, thanks to my experience with Mint Xfce; ...

I've always had OEM systems, but one day I want to build my own computer. Fred ... Re: Finally had the chance to set up my Mintbox Mini Pro (temporarily). Here it is running like a charm
I bet the final setup will be quite nice. Are you thinking about keeping it on the desk for port accessibility, or mounting it to the back of the monitor to reduce clutter? There are some NUC vendors that sell VESA mounts for that purpose; System76's Meerkat includes a matching VESA mount for free.
