Re: A new USB Stick

I've had excellent results with Micro Center USB3.0 sticks that I get from Amazon. They're cheap, but seem to work fine for me and most importantly (for me) they've got an activity LED. I've bought around 20 in various capacities and have never had a dud so far. If I do they're cheap enough just to ...

Re: Suspend /Hibernate - Why do people use it?

I don't use hibernate, only suspend. Maybe I'm going for lunch or whatever, I want to restart where I left off, so I suspend. It saves a bit of power and therefore money, and it stops the room getting hotter. Agreed. My desktop is in my bedroom. The system including two monitors, modem, router, a c...

PaulL wrote: Wed Feb 21, 2024 12:02 pm You may be right, because I read something in the man page that gave the impression that Suspend needs to write to the swap file/partition.
I'm running Mint Cinnamon 21.2. with a 256GB SSD, 16GB memory and no swap file. Suspend works fine for me.

Re: Checksumo - a neat little program

Then again, I believe the latest versions of Mint have the ability to compare checksums built in. Edit: I just checked 21.1 and it does. Just right click on the download and click on Verify, then go from there. Yep, but I prefer Checksumo. Download the ISO, copy and paste the applicable checksum fr...

Checksumo - a neat little program

Checksumo is found in Flathub. It's got a simple GUI with only two input fields; Search for and select the downloaded .iso, then copy the Hash value to the other field and select "Verify"

Re: Which DNS is used?

Try going to https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ and run the leaktest. It'll tell you which DNS is being used. Two caveats: First, suppose you specified 8.8.8.8, Google DNS. The leaktest might give several DNS IP's but they'll all be identified as Google. The explanatory text on the leaktest site says why....

Re: formatting external drives...renders them unusable???

This is why it's a good idea to have USB sticks with LEDs in them. They all should have, IMHO. Amen to that. I buy all my USB sticks from Micro Center on Amazon. Good price, reasonable speed (at least it's fast enough for me) and LED activity light. Just wait for the light to go out, give it a few ...

I use Waterfox with Ublock and the Goodly Mint extension (highly recommended). I never see ads. Perhaps the extension blocks them? I use a desktop and never access the forum with my phone.

Simple Scan suddenly can't find my scanner [Solved]

I have an HP Officejet 4650, an all-in-one print/scan/fax. Up until today it's worked perfectly for years. Suddenly SimpleScan can't find the scanner. I can do a copy from the printer touch screen, I can print from the computer, but the scanner can't be found. Any suggestions? System: Kernel: 5.15.0...

My version of Disks has a different menu and doesn't include "Take Ownership" or several other options. My version is 42.0. Is there a newer version?

Re: to better understand how Timshift works, read this

Looks promising. Incremental snapshots will save a lot of space ... Isn't that what Timeshift already does? That's the point of rsync based backup and why it's such an industry standard. Timeshift uses rsync. Both Homi and the new, unnamed root backup both use Borg Backup. The main difference is th...

Re: To better understand how Timeshift works, read this

Being the board dullard that I am, what are the "Junk files and folders" mentioned in the comparison of Homi and BaqPaq? As the dullard du jour, I read it as all folders are excluded, I also do not have a Junk folder, much less any idea of what is considered a junk file. Where did you see...

Re: To better understand how Timeshift works, read this

I think the idea behind the new backup program is to be used along with Homi, which is the paid app to back up the home directory. They both use Borg as a backend. I can attest to Homi's space saving, and I can assume the new root backup will be about the same. I have Homi set to backup: 24 hourly s...
