Re: How can I disable auto login?

Sometimes screenshots can be more helpful in explaining. When a username is entered in the 'Username *' field (below example), then the system will automatically login. https://pasteall.org/media/1/d/1d88268b785ef14517f1578e7bcba857.png With username removed (as below), future logins will require a ...

Re: Would you install 'Zoom'?

For answer completeness, and for others reading this in the future, its worth also mentioning Zoom is available as a Flatpak, allowing easy installation / uninstallation using Software Manager.

Re: Forum has been upgraded (report issues here)

Hi xenopeek, When next upgrade happens (Next upgrade? We've only just performed this one! :D), how do you feel about correcting a tiny, tiny caps/naming issue, 'Desktops & Window Managers' -> "XFCE", if not mistaken, should be written Xfce? It appears correctly on linuxmint.com, so jus...

Re: Virtualbox version 5

..The one available on the repositories is x86 and my machine is 64... Hi, For clarification, x86 is mentioned as an indication of supported CPU architecture, the two most common x86 architecture variants being AMD (32-bit and 64-bit) and Intel (32-bit and 64-bit), as opposed to other CPU architect...

Re: Linux Tablet Hack

Hi Ozo, In case there's any misunderstanding. Most cheap tablets these days use fairly recent Atom CPUs which are 64-bit, and can run a 64-bit OS. Main issue is, many have a 32-bit UEFI (boot loader (think BIOS)) which boots into the 64-bit OS. Since many GNU/Linux distributions only support booting...

Re: Making battery last longer? Underclocking cpu?

Not only can badly manufactured batteries (or batteries with missing safety features) suffer from thermal runaway. Some can contain fewer cells with lead/metal weights added to make up the weight difference.

Rather than a clean installation. Possibly first try adding another user account, log into that account to check if the same thing happens?

Re: Desperately need double functional height of taskbar.

I stumbled upon how to make a two-row panel on 18.3 XFCE, but don't remember exactly how it's done. But it's in there somewhere! No idea if MATE will do that or not. Funny you should mention that, popped on here today to say about Xfce edition supporting multiple panels rows, actually supports from...

Further to my last post...

As of today, using the PPA, LibreOffice 6..0.0.3 now replaces either, version 5.4.4.2, or older version supplied with Mint. :)

Great to hear sound is now working! :)

Please be kind enough to edit the original thread title adding <SOLVED> at the beginning, so, even though the issue resolved itself, others will know no further assistance is required. Thank you.

Re: How do I solve this error? "Error: Breaks existing package 'virtualbox' conflict: virtualbox-5.1 ( )"

Ah, with Mint apt is self elevating for many basic commands. Supplied command automatically asks for user password. This saves typing, as well as making commands easier to remember. :) So the command can be shortened to... apt purge virtualbox* vbox* Prefer apt to apt-get, with apt the user has a ni...

Re: Cinnamon menu looks different after update

Hi Mia, Which update are you referring to? Second menu shown is the fall-back MATE menu, and is normally only visible if Cinnamon crashes. In case helpful, you can still take a screenshot by launching Screenshot and using 'Grab after a delay of' setting, choose something like 4 seconds, click 'Take ...

Hi thx-1138,

Previously supplied purge command should perform that action without having to manually search.

Hi arnauld,

Welcome to the Linux Mint forum!

If using the Cinnamon edition, what devices are listed under 'System Settings' -> 'Sound' (or 'Sound Settings' from the Sound applet)?

Re: How do I solve this error? "Error: Breaks existing package 'virtualbox' conflict: virtualbox-5.1 ( )"

Hi,

You can use...

Code: Select all

apt purge virtualbox*
This should remove an older version of VirtualBox plus its configuration files.

Then try the installation again.
If still experience issues, check to make sure the Xenial version of the .deb file was downloaded from https://www.virtualbox.org

Re: Making battery last longer? Underclocking cpu?

Other ideas... You already mention brightness, so won't mention that one! :) - Make sure there's adequate ventilation, so CPU and possibly GPU fans can run at a lower rate. - Clean fans if necessary - If an Optimus laptop, switch from NVIDIA dGPU to Intel iGPU. - If possible, use the latest kernel (...
