Re: Can't download Mint 19.3

Thanks for that. Tried your link and downloaded 1.6GB in 30min - then failed again. Fortunately this time it agreed to resume and completed after a further 8min! Unfortunately, I didn't indicate in OP that I was after the xfce version! However, as a last resort the xfce meta package can be installed...

Can't download Mint 19.3 [Resolved]

I have tried half a dozen times to download Mint 19.3 from repos all over the world but it fails every time. In all cases it is sloooooow - hardly better than old 56k - but fails after about an hour. The best has been ~1.2Gb after 1.5 hours! Have even tried using a neighbour's cable connection. Is i...

Re: Remastering Linux Mint DVD

I realise that this thread is a couple of months old but will add my experience in the hope that it may be of use to some. Over the years, one of the criteria for adopting a linux distro has become remastering (taking a snapshot) of an installed system to facilitate maintaining and tweaking an exist...

Re: Connected to router but no internet

Sorry - the link took me straight to your latest reply and didn't twig the earlier dialogue!

So the bars on the tray icon indicate a connection and reasonably good connection strength?

If you click on the tray icon (or hover the mouse pointer) does your router ssid show up as connected?

Re: Connected to router but no internet

Before what?

Anyway, Step 1 - log into the router's admin page from your browser. Does it show that you have an internet connection?

Re: Need help getting past the GNU Grub menu on a tablet

I have a tablet with Android and Win8.1 pre-installed. Using the latter as touchscreen only can be very frustrating so tried one of my wifi keybourd+mouse which share a single dongle which works very well as it does with pcs, smartphones and also with a Raspberry Pi. However, in all cases it did not ...

Re: Frustrating Time (Mint 19)

Thanks for the replies. trytip Yes, that solves the issue of getting the clock back onto tray. Btw I feel that there is more than one bug in the the right click dialogues which was kinda suggested in OP. jimallyn I use the method described here on dual boot systems: This is more than dual boot. 3 Wi...

Re: Frustrating Time (Mint 19)

First I'm brainless and now I'm shooting myself in the foot! Sounds like I should lie down and have my tummy tickled by the whims of so-called smart devices. eg Accept predictive text or allow my tv to eavesdrop and send data back to Korea or accept my browsing habits being tracked and sold on. Also...

Re: Frustrating Time (Mint 19)

Sorry, but your mention of Cinnamon made me realise that I did not indicate in OP that this is the Xfce version and, therefore, my description of the dialogues may have seemed like gibberish to you! Also realised, after reading the link, that Mint 18 (installed as an interim measure whilst awaiting ...

Re: Frustrating Time (Mint 19)

Thanks for the reply. However, clearly I must be within the brainless subset in favouring local in all but one o/s. Yes, the timezone is Europe/London selected during install but no option at that time (sorry!) to select clock source as I recollect. As such, yes it is currently utc+1 (ie bst) but co...

Frustrating Time (Mint 19)

Forced by the eol of Mint 13, I have tried 18.1. 17.3 and 18.3 (in that order) whilst awaiting 19. None of the aforementioned, or Mint 8 before these, have given this frustrating niggle. My systems are multi-boot and, for obvious reasons, only allow one o/s to take care of daylight saving. Whenever ...

Re: Footprints and "Features"

Thanks for the further response Rob. My recent focus has been on the needs and frustrations of Spring gardening in the UK! I understand your comment about it being more fun writing new features (+ more bugs) than debugging old ones - even if the new feature utilises old buggy modules with the conseq...

Re: Footprints and "Features"

Thanks for the reply. The OP was posted in chat because it was more observation than thorough technical question (which would have suggested the use of a more appropriate forum). However, inxi is not very revealing - mostly the spec of the environment - but does indicate that the 1TB hdd is only 4.6...

Re: What would you use if Mint wasn't available?

Currently my favoured O/S's other than Mint (and Win) are PCLinuxOS (a rolling release but recently forced to start again after the adoption of Kde5 and abrupt withdrawal of repo support) and MX-16 (and previously Mepis). I've tried many distros over the years searching for those that fulfil my crit...

Footprints and "Features"

The last couple of days, I've been using ClipGrab to down load some (Guitar riffs!) videos and all went well until latterly. When I checked the Download folder, noticed that the last couple hadn't been saved. Concerned, it occurred to me that space might be a problem and indeed it was so moved them ...

Re: Screenlets in Mint 18.2?

All's well with the world once more! I thought I'd exhausted possibilities when the screenlets installed by setting ppa to v1.6 failed to start and nor did v1,7 from deb. However, followed the link https://launchpad.net/~screenlets/+archive/ubuntu/ppa?field.series_filter=xenial supplied by xenospeek...

Re: How Silly (Mint 18.3 Xfce)

hanks for the inputs. Again I apologise if the spirit of OP. posted in Chat , is obscure. It is basically a chronicle and therefore not necessarily succinct - though I wish it could have been!. However, As remarked earlier, if it had been a query it would have been posted elsewhere where there is of...

Re: How Silly (Mint 18.3 Xfce)

I'm sorry if the OP is too much to absorb. The preamble was simply to set the scene and pre-empt any who might otherwise demand more detail or suggest trying version XX.x.

Maybe I should file a bug report but wanted solicit others experience of this "log-out during insallation" feature.

Re: How Silly (Mint 18.3 Xfce)

Thanks xenopeek but had already tried that per earlier post search.php?search_id=egosearch.

However the main point of the OP title is onward from "Try 18.3 still no screenlets but eol a further 2 years..." - ie being logged out during installation etc!

How Silly (Mint 18.3 Xfce)

I'm on the run! Forced by the eol of Mint 13 (after Mint 8 Gnome and nothing in between being sufficiently persuasive) I'm compelled to look at the most recent version(s) and it has been a bit of a saga. Try 18.2 but no Screenlets (even though available to Ubuntu Xenial apparently) and also baulked ...
