Update - it suddenly just works again

A small update. I did an upgrade to the Mint installation some five days ago, when connected by cable. After the upgrade, the wi-fi was still not functioning even after a reboot. So for a couple of days (while discussing to just buy another laptop) we laid the cable over the floor at daytime and rem...

Old Toshiba Satelite - cannot connect to wifi any more

Hi. Have an old laptop that runs LM 18.3 Xfce 32 bit. Very important information: Until about a couple of months ago, the wi-fi card operated just fine (network password is stored, and the psw is not changed since then) The wi-fi seems at first (after boot) to operate fine. I can see the name of my ...

Re: Installing Cinnamon on 32GB eMMC drive

I'll bet you have got one of those cheap laptops that have a locked-down EFI (can't remember the excact term right now) and simply put: You can't boot anything else other than Windows on that computer. Afaik that also means the computer won't let you boot live-cd linux neither. But then again, it is...

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia randomly shuts down computer

That is a problem to some Acer models. Have one myself (not the excact same model, released in 2010) with the exact same issue, posted a thread on Tom's hardware that leads nowhere. But I know this much after dissasembling the computer: The cooler is made poorly/cheap. The "rubber pillows" between t...

nano text editor single-user-mode - copy text

Hi forum. In my recent thread , I got into a problem. Based on a misconception (won't discuss that in this thread), I tried to copy a string of test from one text file to another, purely using nano in single user mode. First off, it looks slightly different than in desktop/terminal. Amongst other th...

SOLVED

Problem solved, jay :D After the blinking cursor problem, I try to hard reboot, but desktop wouldn't load - not surprisingly since /var was empty at that time (the newly created var folder, but before fstab was changed no files at /var). Solution was to use live-cd and edit fstab file from there. Do...

Re: Trying to mount /var to another partition

ok, but no - intention is to use that path temporarly only, to have a path to copy files to. After that I will remount to /var (after renaming original /var). But that is not the problem for now. As said in previous post, I'm not able to make any use of single user mode. That is the problem I need t...

Thanks, I try thet, but I'm stuck trying to change to single user mode: I managed to create folder /mnt/var and then mount /dev/sdb6 at /mnt/var. But when trying to enter single user mode - sudo telinit 1 it all go stuck, I don't know how to make it further from here. I got to the screen that say "w...

Re: Trying to mount /var to another partition

Update. I searched the web, and I found this guide from 2014 for Debian: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/131311/moving-var-home-to-separate-partition Question is: Are all those commands usable for Mint too? From what I have being able to find on the web so far is that the command for single...

Re: Trying to mount /var to another partition

Thank you for helping me forward so far. No, I was not at live-cd when using that terminal session. Therefore the user is me - I did not use Terminal in Live-cd session to perform file copy. That pasted text was after I managed to replace the bad (?) fstab file with the original one, and to get inst...

this forum - strikethrough text?

Hi forum. I couldn't find a sub forum for discussion about the forum itself, so I put one here. So I would love to have ability to strike through text on this forum. There is times that I need to change something I wrote, but I think if I just let it there and strike it out, it should tell the reade...

Re: Trying to mount /var to another partition

I have a question which in order to answer you'll have to boot the live media and mount /dev/sdb6 to /mnt The question is what resides on /dev/sdb6 :?: If you're willing sudo mount /dev/sdb6 /mnt then paste back ls -lh /mnt The contents is (after mounting to /mnt as suggested): sprinterdriver@optip...

Trying to mount /var to another partition [SOLVED]

Hi. Have a new install of LM Cinnamon 18.3 x64 on an Optiplex 780 desktop. Just a brief explanation why I bother doing this: On this computer, it is all from scratch, so no disaster if I screw up anything. I consider it a test rig. During installation of LM, only one 320GB drive was present (cd rom ...

Re: How do you burn an ISO of you entire system?

I'll also reccomend Clonezilla - but I don't think Clonezilla itself support burdning do DVD/DB, so you'll need to use another desktop OS to do the burning.

weird observation - writing process much faster using Linux

The thread is solved now, but there is one more observation I want to share when it come to creation of a bootable usb pen. it's working now - solved

Hi. I've just made the bootable LM usb stick over again. It works now. So I guess there must have being some data corruption at the last one. Anyway, here is the difference between the one with the problem and the recent one (it's on the same physical usb stick). The one that had problems No CRC che...
