Re: My review of Mint 18

Guys, what are you still doing here? Most of the Linux world has adopted systemd. Including Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Fact of life. No amount of complaining, venting and heartbreaking bitter tears will ever change that. Live with it. However, in the fringes of the vast Linux ecosystem there ar...

Re: My review of Mint 18

Unfortunately, because anything based on Debian 8 is so unstable (literally have not had ONE install that did not require weekly or less reboots, I leave my machines running for months and years at a time), this has created a nightmare scenario for me supporting clients who now have no upgrade path...

Re: My review of Mint 18

I'm genuinely glad that so many systems are running OK for people with SystemD. This has not been my experience at all. I've had to revert many, many servers, desktops, and hypervisors back to Wheezy, or over to Devuan, mostly due to constant crashing. My review was completely honest. To suggest I w...

Re: Systemd and LMDE (The future)

Sorry for being dramatic. SUPER frustrated. Literally every OS I use is broken in the latest version due to SystemD. Mint Debian Proxmox All broken since taking the D. Crashes, Memory overruns, instability, lock ups. On a big variety of hardware, too: laptops, desktops, servers, VMs. I'm incredibly ...

Re: Systemd and LMDE (The future)

Goodbye Mint! I can't take the instability and nightmare of SystemD. I'll be migrating all my machines, and all 300+ of my client machines to Devuan. My reputation is too valuable to throw away on junk software. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=214262&p=1211782#p1211782 If you want ...

Re: systemd evil or not?

Evil? I have no idea. Crap? Absolutely! Every distro I've used with systemd is unstable, unreliable, inefficient, and crashes randomly for no reason. This is true on the server side as well as the desktop side. Devuan is working very similarly to Debian 7 for me on the server side. Which is a very, ...

Re: Are you already using Mint 18?

Still using at Linux Mint 17.3. Linux Mint 18 have bugs, the biggest is systemd. Can confirm. I've had nothing but stability issues with every version of Mint since adopting systemd upstream. Crashes, dropped connectivity, memory overruns, slowness. I have already moved my serious production machin...

Re: Mint 18 - connection lost

Can confirm. I'm running Mint 18 mate from an upgrade of 17.3 (64 bit). Everything works fine, I come back some hours later, and suddenly I have no internet. Wifi still shows connected in the tray by the clock, but I can't ping out, surf, no upstream connectivity at all. I have to reboot. Every. Day...

Re: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com

I'm having similar problems. I ended up: nano -w /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list And I just removed the extras.linuxmint.com line altogether. I also did the 99badproxyhack thing up above. Then change to faster mirrors in the Software Sources tool, and then FINALLY I got ap...

Same exact issue. LMDE Betsy x64 Mate edition with all updates. Files appear to copy OK, doing an ls -al shows they have the same bits.... But the File Operations dialog will not go away when copying large files from SSD to HD over SS Usb 3.0 connection. GRRRR -rw------- 1 rhy rhy 2103928730 Dec 14 ...

Re: Continue using manually installed driver

Yeah, I have this problem too. All other driver options are grayed out. I do NOT want to have to spend the rest of today copy/pasting and installing from scratch. Any ideas?

Tried:

apt install xorg --reinstall

Now I'm in software rendering mode. :/

How to Fix WINE

OK, so there were a few different threads about this, and I contributed a bit, but I finally got wine all setup. Here was my process in a nutshell: su <password> apt install wine apt install wine32 cd /root mv .wine .wine32 WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/root/.wine32 WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/root/.win...

Re: LMDE 2 64Bit RC-WINE 1.6 Stable Does Not Show In Menu?

Figured out a new super easy fix:

apt install wine32

Took a bit of troubleshooting, but there was not 32 bit stuff by default in the latest 1.6.2 build included in Debian Jessie.

Re: LMDE 2 64Bit RC-WINE 1.6 Stable Does Not Show In Menu?

I'm using the final release (MATE edition), still same problem, Wine doesn't show up. Unfortunately to config all my routers I need a windows tool that works perfectly in Wine. Any potential solution or ideas here? What would the command look like to run something in Wine from the CLI? That might wo...

Re: Linux Mint 17 Desktop Sharing Vino Settings not working

VNC is terrible and slow. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but if you actually want to USE remote capabilities:

Use MATE with Marco (not Compiz)

apt install xrdp tinyvncserver

init 6

Then you can remote in from another Mint with Remmina and actually have a usable desktop.

Re: How to fix remote desktop access (RDP) in Linux Mint

FYI xrdp does not like Compiz. Just switched from Compiz back to Marco on a Mate install and xrdp works very well, albeit it seems a little slow. Maybe the lag is from going wifi to router to wifi though. Haven't tested real ethernet or gig e. Will probably do that at work later this week. RDP is ab...

Ugh, I just got a systemd update in Update Manager.

It's official: I'm moving on from Linux Mint.

It's been a nice ride.

I like log files I can actually READ though.
