Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint??

Back when support for Windows XP ended I needed to either pay to upgrade or find an alternative. Had recalled hearing about Linux and thought it was a pretty neat project so I researched it. Ended up starting with Ubuntu but I didn't like the icons being on the side and it also seemed to lack instal...

Re: Upgrading from Mint 17.3 on dual boot

Following up, I began my first attempt at updating on my dual boot laptop (Mint 17.3/Win7), and had to cancel because I was stumped when it came to selecting partition(s) and 'Use as' section. I had selected the partition Mint 17.3 is on but I received the message 'No root file system'. I then notic...

Re: Upgrading from Mint 17.3 on dual boot

Thanks for the response. I want to upgrade to the new version but not sure how to do that on a dual boot laptop. I know while installing I need to chose which files (?) to replace. Worried I might click on the wrong thing.

[Solved] Upgrading from Mint 17.3 on dual boot

Hello, Have been wondering how to upgrade from Mint 17.3 Cinnamon to the latest version, now 19.1, on a dual boot with Windows 7 for awhile. Have looked through the guides but didn't notice what I was looking for. If someone could explain it to me or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it...

Re: Unable to correct wifi password

Ok, thanks. Forgot to mention I set up the laptop at my place, then took it over to my mother's house (it's her laptop), that's why I was trying to set up a new wifi connection. Tomorrow I'll try deleting that connection and starting over, thanks.

Unable to correct wifi password

Apologies if this has been asked, I didn't see a thread for this issue. I installed Mint 19.1 Cinnamon on an old laptop and I typed the wifi password incorrectly the first time. Obviously, it couldn't connect so I made the changes to the password and tried again. When it stopped trying to connect it...

Re: Installing Tor browser

Thanks for the tip. I'll play around with it the next few days. Not even sure what I'll use it for, just thought it might come in handy someday.

I went ahead and used the instructions available for 17.3 and it worked fine. Disregard.

Installing Tor browser

Hi all, Quick question on whether the instructions for installing the Tor browser on Mint 17.3 are ok to use for Mint 18? Thought it better to ask before installing it and having problems. I noticed there was a Tor option in the Software area, I did install that but it doesn't show up anywhere that ...

Re: Possible hacking attempt

Wow, what great advice. Really appreciate the time taken to explain this to me. Will be working through this over the next couple of days. Think I'll just use my PC for work (on Citrix) since that's what I experienced the hacking attempt on, and my laptop for everything else until I get my PC set up...

Thanks for the advice everyone. Getting started now on changing passwords, and setting up the sandbox option, something I had never even heard of before.

Possible hacking attempt

Hello, Over the past two or three days drudgereport has frozen up on me (not all the time though) to the point I can't even 'x' out of Firefox. I wouldn't be too concerned about it, except this morning first thing I did was check my bank account, visit another website, then went to drudgereport whic...

Re: Buggy PC after upgrading to 17.3

Turns out it was the mouse. I didn't consider that before because it was the mouse that came with the PC and was hardwired not wireless, plus the problems started when I upgraded to Mint 17.3. Now that I'm using the wireless mouse it seems to be just fine. Thanks again for the suggestions. The CPU u...

Buggy PC after upgrading to 17.3

Hello. My problem: I have an older Dell PC, GX620, which was working well with Mint 17.2 until I upgraded to 17.3. Soon after it started getting buggy, in the sense it would take 2, 3, or 4 clicks to click on something (you could see it check but it would uncheck just as quickly) or to bring somethi...

Re: Why Linux? Why not Microsoft?

When Windows XP was no longer supported I had to either buy Windows 8 for about $100, or find something cheaper. Had heard about Linux so started researching it online. Knew so little about it I wasn't sure if it would be accessible to me, whether it was even an OS, or if it was in my price range. A...

Re: Donation transaction info question, and more

Thanks. On Paypal it showed as going to Linux, but initially in my bank transactions it showed as going to Hobby_Japan. Clement replied to my email and said he didn't know anything about Hobby_Japan, and later when I went back to my bank transactions the bank had changed the description to Linux Min...

Re: Donation

I think so; AFAIK Clem handles the donations at least once a month, so you should be receiving an email with login link to your donor profile page within a week or two. On the donor profile page you can set your display name and some other options. I'm curious if donations are still handled like th...
