Bye, Mint KDE, coping

I was disappointed to learn that Mint is dumping its KDE edition. I had been having a hard time getting Gimp 2.10 to install on my Mint 18.1/KDE desktop PC. I upgraded to 18.3, and so I'm good for now. However, looks like at some point I'm going to need to make a choice of distros. The way I see it,...

Re: It won't install Gimp 2.10

An update: I was having a beast of a time getting Gimp 2.10 to install until I used the Update Manager to upgrade my OS from Mint 18.1 to 18.3 / KDE. I did that upgrade; now all of a sudden I have both Gimp 2.8 and 2.10 on my system, both working perfectly. I'm going to leave it like that. That way ...

It won't install Gimp 2.10

Gimp 2.10 is out, and I've installed it on my Windows PC. However, it's giving me all kinds of hassles on my Linux Mint/KDE PC. I found instructions online on how to install it, including here: https://www.tecmint.com/install-gimp-in-ubuntu/ I found that you can install it in the terminal via two me...

Re: purged 5.0, but install of VB 5.1 still hassles me

Did you take the advice in the error message to execute vboxconfig? Yes, yesterday I ran "sudo /sbin/vboxconfig" to no avail. The problem still persisted. I'm not a VBOX user, I just tried VBOX in the past, while expecting some VBOX expert, you can try to see if there are missing kernel h...

[solved] purged 5.0, but install of VB 5.1 still hassles me

I've been trying to get VirtualBox 5.1 working under Mint 18 KDE, but I'm running into problems. I first installed VB 5.0 something from the Software Manager. With that I was able to install Windows 10 under VB and I installed the Guest Additions. However, I encountered problems. I could not get Win...

Project Management software

I need to set up a project in an application similar to Microsoft Project. I've used MS Project before at work, but that application is out of the question. It costs over 500 dollars, and who knows if it will even run under WINE. Previously, when I was using Kubuntu, I used ProjectLibre, which worke...

Re: shared external drive -- which approach is best?

After posting my last message and before you posted yours, I installed Samba via the Synaptic Package Manager and rebooted. Still no luck. Does it make a difference whether I install Samba in the package manager or on the command line? I noticed it installed some kind of GUI. When I click on the K b...

Re: shared external drive -- which approach is best?

Thanks for both of your suggestions. Okay, very interesting. My Netgear router does indeed have a USB port. I hadn't even thought of that. When I plug the external hard drive into that, it shows up immediately on the Windows 7 PC under the Network icon and then as "Readyshare." (This Win 7...

shared external drive -- which approach is best?

I don't want the videos that I download to stream to pig up hard drive space on either my Linux Mint/KDE PC or on my Windows 10 one. The reason is both these PCs are highly customized. It takes me a long time to set them up. Therefore, once they're set up, I save a Clonezilla image of them to an ext...

Re: swap ctrl and caps lock

I have not tried that yet, no. Do I just use xed and type the command into a text file and then name the file something like swapctrl.txt and then make "swapctrl.txt" a command in startup apps? Does it matter where the file is? Should it just be in my Home folder? I've never used bash comm...

swap ctrl and caps lock

I just installed Linux Mint 18.1 on a new Dell desktop PC today. I'm used to using Kubuntu, but thought it was time for a change. On all my computers, I swap the Ctrl key with the caps lock one. I'm trying to do that in Mint, and I've found only part of what I need. I found this command to run in th...

Can someone recommend a file finder for Mint?

The file finder I've used in Kubuntu has been KFind. I've also used it in Mint/KDE. It works great in both these KDE-based distros, but it fails in Mint/Cinnamon. It doesn't crash, but no matter what you're searching for, it says, "Error. 0 files found." I therefore either need to find wha...

Re: manually putting a WINE program in launcher

If you right click can you select "Show hidden files"? (When you are trying to browse to find ultralingua.exe).
That did the trick! Thanks.

manually putting a WINE program in launcher

I use Kubuntu on two other PCs, but I've decided to give Mint/Cinnamon a try on a little netbook. I've started loading up my favorite software, including some titles that will need to run under WINE. One of them is Ultralingua 6, a language dictionary that I purchased for Windows ages ago and which ...
