Re: Mint 19.2: New PC heats up like crazy on mundane tasks

You have the experienced guys helping out, so that is good. I just thought i'd pop my head in and say check the links in my sig if you are still having issues after the help cycle is done. I love Mint and i use it (XFCE) everyday as my main internet usage laptop, but i do have history with it and ov...

Re: Can't tame my nervous CPU-fan with fancontrol

I would boot into your Bios/UEFI to monitor what your real temps are for a bit. Just to give you some proper readings to baseline things with. I've had issues with Mint (Cinnamon in particular) and computer temps over the years i've been using it, so first make sure your system isn't going to cook i...

Re: How to run Windows programs on Dual Boot machine [SOLVED]

I know this has been 'Solved'. I just wanted to add one clear bit of information :) The whole point of running a dual-boot (or multi-boot) system is to be able to have access to OS specific tools/software that you would not have under another OS. So run the programs you need in the OS required and s...

Re: totally lost, Linux Mint doesn't boot after installing

I had a quick look through the first few pages and the last few pages of this massive thread (!) and it occured to me that sometimes it is really hard to follow information from a thread especially as that info changes. I also did not see a link to a guide to help your situation (installation of Min...

Re: Current Version Of Graphics Driver Available

I'll just add you might want to also look over the 'Graphics Cards & Monitors' subforum: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=59 I've had lots of issues in the past trying to correctly install non nouveau drivers, so you might find threads and info in that forum to help when you get to that ...

Re: indicator cpufreq not working on Cool & Quiet AMD

I'm not familiar with the program myself, but a quick look around the internet sort of gives the impression it can behave a little oddly?

https://community.linuxmint.com/softwar ... or-cpufreq

Lots of mixed reports of it working/not working/half working etc.

Re: Can all Linux computers still be hacked in 10 seconds via "mousejacking"?

The short answer is don't use a wireless mouse. You can still find decent wired ones (i use them!). The reason i don't use wireless mice is actually because i don't like having to worry about batteries (i have enough of those to think about with fire alarms and wall clocks and various other devices)...

Re: antivirus

One option, as hardware is cheap (and software often free), is to have a specific designated PC for malware scans. Before you move software around your systems you first scan everything on that system. Now for those that want to game online (directly in Windows or via Wine in Linux) then this obviou...

Re: Mint/Windows Dual Boot - How to change default OS

It sure seems like that recently MS and Intel (and AMD!) have been trying their hardest to mess up peoples ability to easily set up dual-boot systems (with Windows and Linux). It varies a little from laptop/PC manufacturer but compared to pre Windows 10 era, things are much more complicated and like...

Re: Is Linux beyond me?

I want to replace Windows with Linux but so far seem to be struggling with my current distro. I bought a new memory stick and installed Linux on its own partition (Dell I5 processor with 4GB RAM working fine on Windows 7). In days it started to run slow and throw up error messages. I now wonder whe...

Re: Linux Mint 17.3 needs an upgrade...

It probably depends on how much stuff you have collected ontop of your base 17.3 install. When i took the jump from my 17.1 Cinnamon to 18.3 XFCE, that system had about 3-4 years of use so i simply went through my /Home/ folder and checked everything i wanted to move over to the new fresh install. I...

Re: antivirus

yeah one of the first things i do after installing Mint is set up the firewall, it's pretty easy to do luckily. There's even a GUI for it nowadays. It's called GUFW. Yeah :) I even have a desktop icon short cut to GUFW, it's just very easy to click and use (well check it is still on, from time to t...

Re: antivirus

In general i'd say that as an average Linux Mint user you won't need an AV unless you also have WIndows machines and transfer files across from one to another. That's a common misconception: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/security.html#ID2.1 (item 2.1) I love all your Linux work Pjotr,...

Wow, i did not even know these were a thing! https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3528/ Well be careful, i killed a laptop due to overheating issues when i first started using Mint (there are some links in my sig that may help? But it sounds like a more serious over-heating problem). How old is your mintbo...

Re: Why do newcomers stay with Mint?

Purely from the sense that i don't need to move from Linux Mint to another Linux? Well in that sense it is because in particular Mint feels 'familiar' to my years of experience with Windows systems, and it works very well, so why change? I like things that 'just work' and feel familiar (in life in g...

The Linux Gamer youtube guy has some important points (i feel) to make on the mud slinging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiJb0jhpbS0 I've been using Mint for a few years now and i really can't see that i 'need' to use any other Linux distro. Re: Flat 'Modern' GUI design and where it comes from (and reflections of Clems March 2019 blog post in relation to that)

So "flat" vs "not flat" is basically just the style of icons...... Not the way i've seen it rolled out (Flat Design that is). As i mentioned up thread it goes hand in hand with streamlining/simplification and loss of function that is an inexcapable part of being DNA linked to mobile usage, and by '...

Re: Power Outage, now won't boot

I have no advice on your screen, but do keep in mind that power outages can damage hardware (as well as software). I have two UPS at home to cover a range of hardware. One is an Eaton Protection Station 800, and has two desktops (that are on most days) and their two monitors plugged in with plenty o...
