Re: Can all Linux computers still be hacked in 10 seconds via "mousejacking"?

The short answer is don't use a wireless mouse. You can still find decent wired ones (i use them!). The reason i don't use wireless mice is actually because i don't like having to worry about batteries (i have enough of those to think about with fire alarms and wall clocks and various other devices)...

Re: antivirus

One option, as hardware is cheap (and software often free), is to have a specific designated PC for malware scans. Before you move software around your systems you first scan everything on that system. Now for those that want to game online (directly in Windows or via Wine in Linux) then this obviou...

Re: Mint/Windows Dual Boot - How to change default OS

It sure seems like that recently MS and Intel (and AMD!) have been trying their hardest to mess up peoples ability to easily set up dual-boot systems (with Windows and Linux). It varies a little from laptop/PC manufacturer but compared to pre Windows 10 era, things are much more complicated and like...

Re: Is Linux beyond me?

I want to replace Windows with Linux but so far seem to be struggling with my current distro. I bought a new memory stick and installed Linux on its own partition (Dell I5 processor with 4GB RAM working fine on Windows 7). In days it started to run slow and throw up error messages. I now wonder whe...

Re: Linux Mint 17.3 needs an upgrade...

It probably depends on how much stuff you have collected ontop of your base 17.3 install. When i took the jump from my 17.1 Cinnamon to 18.3 XFCE, that system had about 3-4 years of use so i simply went through my /Home/ folder and checked everything i wanted to move over to the new fresh install. I...

Re: antivirus

yeah one of the first things i do after installing Mint is set up the firewall, it's pretty easy to do luckily. There's even a GUI for it nowadays. It's called GUFW. Yeah :) I even have a desktop icon short cut to GUFW, it's just very easy to click and use (well check it is still on, from time to t...

Re: antivirus

In general i'd say that as an average Linux Mint user you won't need an AV unless you also have WIndows machines and transfer files across from one to another. That's a common misconception: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/security.html#ID2.1 (item 2.1) I love all your Linux work Pjotr,...

Re: Mintbox is overheating

Wow, i did not even know these were a thing! https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3528/ Well be careful, i killed a laptop due to overheating issues when i first started using Mint (there are some links in my sig that may help? But it sounds like a more serious over-heating problem). How old is your mintbo...

Re: Why do newcomers stay with Mint?

Purely from the sense that i don't need to move from Linux Mint to another Linux? Well in that sense it is because in particular Mint feels 'familiar' to my years of experience with Windows systems, and it works very well, so why change? I like things that 'just work' and feel familiar (in life in g...

This is an article re the newly discovered HiddenWasp Trojan. As a linux Noob I would be interested what the Senior Members of the forum think, and if there is anything that Linux Mint users need to do ? https://www.intezer.com/blog-hiddenwasp-malware-targeting-linux-systems/ Well it really just go...

Re: ...time for Linux Mint to go. Huh?

The Linux Gamer youtube guy has some important points (i feel) to make on the mud slinging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiJb0jhpbS0 I've been using Mint for a few years now and i really can't see that i 'need' to use any other Linux distro. Then again i am a specific demographics in that: 1. I g...

Re: Flat 'Modern' GUI design and where it comes from (and reflections of Clems March 2019 blog post in relation to that)

So "flat" vs "not flat" is basically just the style of icons...... Not the way i've seen it rolled out (Flat Design that is). As i mentioned up thread it goes hand in hand with streamlining/simplification and loss of function that is an inexcapable part of being DNA linked to mobile usage, and by '...

Re: failure in installation GPU RX580

Hi kiba, firstly i have not successfully tried to fully install a discrete GPU in Linux yet, so i won't be able to offer much advice. Having said that you should maybe look over the threads in the section of the Mint forum that deals specifically with GPU related things and post there? here is the l...

Re: Power Outage, now won't boot

I have no advice on your screen, but do keep in mind that power outages can damage hardware (as well as software). I have two UPS at home to cover a range of hardware. One is an Eaton Protection Station 800, and has two desktops (that are on most days) and their two monitors plugged in with plenty o...

Re: Why so few webrowsers? Any other recommended repos?

Since discovering Mint 17.1 a few years ago i've used these browsers: Firefox, Chromium, Palemoon, Slimjet. Firefox and Chromium came either with the Linux Mint install or from the Download Manager. Palemoon and Slimjet came from their respected websites and required a certain amount of voodoo (runn...

Re: Cloning system drive - is it worth it?

Should you take system images to an external drive - YES! They are your last line of defence in the event of disaster. Your first line of defence is utilities like timeshift/backintime/luckybackup - these are file level backup utilities. .....snip..... Because I was a fan of redo, I am working on a...

Re: Should I update everything on the Update Manager list?

I don't know how WharfRat does that (i.e. i'm also a Linux Mint Newbie), but in general i only update 'level 3' (green colour) updates. 4&5 i usually wait until they become level 3 at a later date. Probably over-cautious but i've not 'killed' a Mint system yet :) ZakGordon - correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: Richard Stallman Gnu Fsf compliant respective Mint?

I'll just chime in with a general consideration. We are not 'free' using technology today, and can not be. Most people under 40 have a 'smart phone' of some kind and all of them send your data out (you might be able to stop some of them from doing that, but it isn't easy). All computer hardware in t...
