Well that does indeed sound like a setting to do with some kind of 'hibernate when the lid is shut' thing. Just keeping the lid open when it is doing stuff is a nice easy fix.

I think i found the screensaver in LM a bit ummm 'not great' and ended up making sure it never switches on at all. This is from about 5 years back when i first started using Linux Mint (on 17.1) and it seemed to freeze my whole system, so maybe don't use one if this is still a concern?

I think it's a simple case of UEFI and security settings. Those issues you've mentioned are typically when you have UEFI and the OS is more or less setup for bios or legacy.
