Re: Finding unique files (SOLVED)

Apologies for continuing this thread rather than creating a more precise thread ( I am writing a summary for the new thread to help others understand the issue but have not had time to complete the summary) An example of a file which rsync flags as different ( despite their time stamps and sha512sum...

Re: Finding unique files (SOLVED)

That's two unexplained anomalies in one thread: first find not finding files that are there, and then rsync saying that identical files are different. Something is amiss and I suspect it's related to DropBox. I wouldn't rely 100% on these backups if I were you. Agree this is a bit concerning!..... ...

Re: Finding unique files (SOLVED)

Well there doesn't seem to be any difference at all with that file. Last ditch check sha512sum -b /media/tony/DropBox_A/Dropbox/New_Pics_vids/catalogueds/17august2014/PD0001.jpg sha512sum -b /media/tony/DropBox_A/Backup_of_catalogued_pics/17august2014/PD0001.jpg If the results are the same I would ...

Re: Finding unique files (SOLVED)

Hi, I have spent some time on identifying unique files and correcting these as necessary. I am now left with a collection of files which, as best I can see, are actually in BOTH folders but are being flagged as unique. For these particular group of files, I have copied from the Master to the Backup ...

Re: Finding unique files

Hi,

I have used WharfRat's rsync method on my 200Gig photos folder and it completes the analysis in under 2s !

It is then very easy to investigate the differences and either delete/restore any uniques.

Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.

Re: Finding unique files

I wonder if "meld" can do what you want: Meld is a graphical diff viewer and merge application for the GNOME desktop. It supports 2 and 3-file diffs, recursive directory diffs, diffing of directories under version control (Bazaar, Codeville, CVS, Darcs, Fossil SCM, Git, Mercurial, Monotone, Subvers...

Re: Finding unique files

That's very odd. I've never encountered find not finding files :? What would rsync do with this :?: rsync -naviuh --modify-window=1 --progress --delete-after /media/tony/DropBox_A/Dropbox/A/ /media/tony/DropBox_A/Backup_of_dropbox/Dropbox/B/ If I have the paths wrong correct them and note the trail...

Hi WharfRat,

here's the output from your suggestion:-

Code: Select all

tony@tony-Latitude-E6430 /media/tony/DropBox_A/Dropbox/A $ find -type f | sort
tony@tony-Latitude-E6430 /media/tony/DropBox_A/Dropbox/A $

Re: Finding unique files

If the two directories exist, contain files, and their contents are viewable (i.e. you have permission to view the contents) then the method I gave will work. You can test the method by creating a directory, putting some files in it, copying it, then deleting a couple of files from the copy. Then c...

Re: Finding unique files

This looks like what you're trying to accomplish. I copied a folder script to script2 then modified the file testfile.sh and ran find and rsync [bill@XPS] ~/script2 $ find /home/bill/script2/ /home/bill/script/ -type f -exec sha1sum {} + | sort | uniq -u --check-chars 40 | cut -c 43- /home/bill/scr...

Re: Finding unique files

This is what I would do: 1. Create list of the contents of /media/tony/DropBox_A/Dropbox and write it to a file in your home directory: $ cd /media/tony/DropBox_A/Dropbox $ find -type f | sort > ~/file1 2. Create a list of the contents of /media/tony/DropBox_A/Backup_of_dropbox and write it to a se...

Re: Finding unique files

I would make a listing of each folder (like ls -alR ), then use diff to compare them. Thanks for the suggestion; it wasn't clear in my original outline but my Dropbox extends over several hundred folders covering 300Gbyte. If I understand your suggestion correctly, it would be quite labour intensiv...

Re: Finding unique files

rsync will sync folders including deleting files no longer on the source. You can use the -n option which will just show what will be done. I use it backups  Hi WhartRat, I believe that this will do the same as Dropbox... if I inadvertently delete a file it will be deleted from the backup as ...

Finding unique files (SOLVED except for. possibly OP-specific, anomaly))

Is there an easy way of comparing 2 folders to find unique files? My purpose is that i use DropBox to sync files across several PC but, routinely, take a copy of Dropbox. That way, if any file/folder is inadvertently deleted ( then synced) from Dropbox, I can go back to the back up. Periodically, I ...

Re: Removing un-needed Mountpoints (?)

thank you for your various responses. @MuteAnt, I do not recall making these folders myself. It is possible that I impatiently removed the USB before they had fully un-mounted. I didn't see your response until after I had deleted the folders... but thank you for your suggestions anyway. @Wharfrat, t...
