Re: 19.3 Linux Mint Grub theme keeps overriding custom [Solved]

I submit that there is a bug here, either in documentation or design. The documentation says the GRUB_THEME= parameter in /etc/default/grub defines what theme is used. But as has been noted here, in fact, that value gets overridden by scripts in /etc/default/grub.d . The presence of this functionali...

Re: Is kernel different in 19.3 if I upgrade instead of re-install?

Thank you for the explanation. That is what I thought was probably the case. For the future, let me make the following suggestion. There is an installed product(distribution/version) and there is the auxillary stuff that goes with it. You say there is a difference between an upgrade and an install. ...

Is kernel different in 19.3 if I upgrade instead of re-install?

I decide to upgrade from 19.1 to 19.3. Rebooted and I am still running the same kernel, 4.15.0-88-generic. I also downloaded the USb install image and it is running a 5.0 kernel. The "what's new" document says "this release ships with linux-firmware 1.173.9 and the Linux kernel 5.0." So I am assumin...

Re: Timeshift: should these patterns be excluded in snapshots?

In the second place, if the user's purpose is to clone the system, they anyhow have to restart and reboot in order to have the system partition unmounted -- rebooting from a Linux live CD or USB pen drive is basically as tedious as rebooting from a Clonezilla CD or pen drive No matter how you backu...

Re: Timeshift: should these patterns be excluded in snapshots?

Let me add some perspective from someone who for over 40 years has been a professor of computer science and involved with unix/linux (since unix was first created). 1. Writing software is "cool" for us geeks. For many, rigorous testing and writing complete concise documentation is not. But the latte...

Re: Timeshift Restore Question...

I am beyond shocked right now.... There are no amount of cuss words to describe the sadness, hate, and rage I have right now. My entire life was on my second drive. Deployments, business, pictures, research (years worth)..... IMHO, the frustration (an understatement) you are feeling is a symptom of...

Re: Clarifing boot process with multiple linux partitions (UEFI)

Please consider VMware and virtual box as virtualization solutions. I have and I do. Most of my Windows work (little that I do) is done in a virtual machine running on Linux. But to run a virtual machine, one must have the host machine running first (in my case, Mint). And when one upgrades to the ...

Clarifing boot process with multiple linux partitions (UEFI)

I have my system set up to run both Windows and Linux, but it is actually quad boot because I have two partitions for windows and two for linux. (When I upgrade to a newer version, I want to be able to run the "current" version at the same time I am working on setting up the next version, so I need ...

Re: Timeshift: should these patterns be excluded in snapshots?

I assume this comes from rsync Great guidance. Provides the following explantion. /dir/ Backups up just the directory but not its contents. /dir/* Backups up the directory's contents but only one-level deep. /dir/** Backups up the direcory's contents, descending through all sub-directories. /dir/**...

Re: Window Borders with Mint 19 Cinnamon

On Mint 19 you only have three for default I was also disappointed by this. Some of the issues I had with the choices. I did not like the choice of icons for maximize/close/etc. I did not like that none of the choices really highlighted the focused window, The "shadow" font in Mint-X becomes almost...

Re: Timeshift: should these patterns be excluded in snapshots?

It appears nobody has answers the OP's original question (except to say your question is unimportant, just stick with the defaults). I am responding for tw reasons. First, what is the answer to the question, if anybody knows? Second, how can such a prominent program in this release be provided witho...

Can anyone offer perspectives on Mint unreliability?

I am running Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca on a Dell system with 16GB of memory (and all partitions ith plenty of free space). When i first started using Mint, I was thrilled with how "professional" the experieince was. But with use, there have been persistent BLATANT failures that seem out-of-place with ...
