Currently on Firefox 78.0.1 - originally installed as part of Mint, not direct from Google or anything. As of a couple of days ago I had Google set as default search pro...

[SOLVED] Re: USB 3 PCIe card and problems with standby mode

(Sorry to not respond to previous poster, I didn't realise I'd had a reply) For the record - I've since found there is nothing actually wrong with this card... Please remember I was running Mint 17.3 and the original 3.xx kernel. Once I'd completed the upgrade to Mint 19.1/kernel 4.15 the card is be...

Re: apt/apt-get update problems

No, it will replace the file. In additional, I suggest to first go Software Sources > Maintenance > Fix MergeList problems to delete all your local copies of the repository indexes, which would be a good idea here with so much having gotten corrupted for reasons I also cannot imagine. The run apt u...

Re: apt/apt-get update problems

Did some more digging found out about /var/lib/apt/lists most of the files in there seem to be Origin: Ubuntu ones, as you'd expect. in order to identify the non-Ubuntu ones I did... grep -i 'origin:' /var/lib/apt/lists/* 2>/dev/null | grep -v 'Ubuntu' /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu...

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown

Well i'm running LM 17.3 and have upgraded (more or less successfully) from 3.19.0.32 to 4.4.0-109-generic. I noticed that several of the packages downloaded had "xenial" in the name. Previously when having to select software such as VirtualBox I've selected "trusty" as my base. Has that changed now...

Re: Need to empty root's trash folder [Solved]

SAFEST they said. Open /data as root like you did before, show hidden files, and sent /data/.Trash-0 to the trash...it's smart enough to notice you must mean permanently-delete. Thanks - that seems to have worked perfectly. I knew roughly what was needed, just wanted a bit of assurance. BleachBit l...

Need to empty root's trash folder

(running mint 17.1 64-bit cinnamon) I was trying to delete a no-longer needed folder located under /data. I'd forgotten this area was created during installation and was owned by root. Pressing the delete key did not give any error or warning, but did not remove the file either. IMHO it should have,...
