Touchpad Slow After Disconnecting Second Monitor

I've got a 1366x720 laptop screen with a 1080p TV I occasionally use as an external display. Prior to connecting the TV for the first time, my touchpad settings for sensitivity and acceleration were right in the middle and it worked great on my laptop screen. When I plugged in the external monitor e...

Unable to find expected entry 'restricted/binary-amd64/Packa

It probably installed a number of 32 bit libraries. Be sure that Skype is completely uninstalled then try sudo apt-get autoremove to remove any packages that were installed for dependency reasons and are now unnecessary. I think it's a long shot this will clear this up but there is no harm in trying...

Frequent updating

When updating certain libraries that are in use when the updates are installed, only new instances of software will load the new libraries after the update. To get the system fully working on the new libraries a reboot is required, although if an administrator knows which daemons load which librarie...

There may have been a regression in a recent update to Flash 11 that breaks the player for that given website. I would try Chrome or Chromium and if that doesn't work, try installing Wine and use Windows Firefox and Flash. Clem has a tutorial for this on the community page. http://community.linuxmin...

Could not download all repository indexes (Rafeala Upgrade)

I've seen cases where an enterprise firewall can cause a hash sum mismatch in apt.

You could try installing TLP via their PPA and use the "tlp bat" option to reduce system strain.

Linux Mint and purchase of new laptop

I'm very happy with my Think Penguin Korora with Mint preinstalled (they don't use the OEM install so you'll have to make your own user account if you want to change the user name and reset the root password but that's no big deal), but that might be more computer than you are looking for. If you de...

Help please opening tar/gz application

You may need to install some additional Python or other libraries using Software Manager or apt. Any additional libraries you may need should be clearly listed either in the documentation or on the website maintaining the software.

Re: Help please opening tar/gz application

Thank you, so I'm at the step of the terminal and I got this picture (attachment) after doing the steps you posted. The sample code was making the assumption that the file was in /home/verstande/drumburp. If the file is in a folder on your desktop then you need to point the mv command to that folde...

Re: Windows program (in Wine) says JRE not installed. What t

You can try

Code: Select all

wine uninstaller
from the command line. I've had problems removing Java from Wine in the past but if you can't easily remove it then should be able to just install the 32-bit version next to it in another directory and point the software to the new 32-bit version.

I think you are going to want to try the 32-bit version of Java instead. This problem is usually caused by a mismatch of 32-bit software with a 64-bit Java library.

Re: Unable to find expected entry 'restricted/binary-amd64/P

I would reboot your system, the lock on the dpkg is a bit suspect. See if this happens after reboot. Other than that I'm not really sure what would cause that... here's a highly rated thread at askubuntu that has a good discussion as well as a link to the official apt troubleshooting page. http://as...

Re: Help please opening tar/gz application

Ok, I'll go through the whole process, just to be sure we're not missing a step. First, unpack the .tar.gz archive into it's own folder in your /home/yourusername directory either by moving it into your home directory and right clicking it to use the archive manager to extract it or with the gunzip ...

Re: Help please opening tar/gz application

Tried this twice and it didn't work, probably because the file is on the desktop and not in the usr/bin? Thanks for the help though. When you say it didn't work, exactly how did it not work, at what step did it fail? You should have been able to set the execute permission and move the file to /usr/...

Re: Unable to find expected entry 'restricted/binary-amd64/P

I assume you are getting these errors when you run "apt-get upgrade"? Did you install any software prior to this happening? I would recommend using the Update Manager to update and Software Manager to install software and avoid using the command line apt commands if you are still getting used to Lin...

Re: Help please opening tar/gz application

Just looked at the picture... looks like a binary file. Right click on the file > Properties > Permissions > check allow executing. Then try double clicking on it. If it doesn't run the only other thing I would suggest would be to sudo mv [the file] /usr/local/bin [or anywhere else in your $PATH if ...
