Re: Wanted: Linux success stories

I do Android Development. I used windows for the first two years for said development. I switched (back, since I have used Linux before) to Linux and EVERYTHING is easier, faster and more robust. Particularly running the Android Virtual Devices. Now I have to plug my nose and wear a rubber suit in o...

Re: rt2800usb driver kernel panic

Thanks! I may end up doing that. For now I purchased a TP-Link TLWA801D wireless access point I have it hooked up in client mode. My network speed is about 70% faster than with the Panda. Since its a desktop I don't need small. But I may use this elsewhere and its good to know how to fix it.

Just recovered from this for the third time today... Super frustrating. I am going to buy a different WiFi adapter or maybe an access point.

rt2800usb driver kernel panic

I have a cheap Panda Wireless USB adapter that is my network connection on my primary desktop machine. Under heavy network loads, I get the "disconnected/connected to your wireless network" message every 30 seconds or so. More disturbing however is that about 3 times a week It causes a kernel panic ...

Re: Mint on Toshiba Satellite C50D?

On my newer Toshiba ( 6 months old now), I had to change the video output behavior in the BIOS. It was set to auto detect and I changed it to default to the laptop screen. When Mint 17.1 would boot off of the CD, it would send the video by default to the external monitor port (prior to the BIOS chan...

Re: Dual boot con Windows 8.1

The first time I installed Mint on a windows 8.1 machine I hadn't used the shutdown /s command before i booted to the install and GRUB wasn't properly installed and it wouldn't boot for me either. I took the easy route and just ran the installer again after issuing the shutdown /s command. The prope...

Re: Dual boot con Windows 8.1

My experience with windows 8.1 was that you need to do a complete shutdown within windows 8.1 itself. To do this From the windows command prompt, issue the command

shutdown /s

it will take 30 seconds to shutdown, but this worked for me.

A google translate version for those of us that don't speak Italian Good evening everyone! As the title I had some problems installing Linux Mint 17.1 in dual boot with Windows 8.1, I will try to be as succinct as possible. I searched around before posting but I have not found a solution. - I quietl...

Re: What antivirus and antimalware can i use on mint?

Well, one of the easiest to install is clamav it has a command line interface. You can get it from the software manager. Avast I believe makes one as well. Some of the AV programs for linux are designed to scan stuff when Linux is serving files, content and mail to other systems. I don't use AV on t...

RT2800 Causing System Freeze

When I am using the network heavily I will get an occasional system freeze. The entire systems becomes non-responsive (no keyboard no mouse, hard reset required). When I went back to look at the logs I see this: May 20 15:12:32 Hostname kernel: [111978.992710] ieee80211 phy0: rt2800usb_entry_txstatu...

I have to run Office 2013 on Windows in VirtualBox to get it to run on Linux. that being said you could try installing with playonlinux, if you have not already done so.

Re: New user's observation

Hmmm... your CUPS server is dead... Do you see a line like this: tcp6 0 0 ::1:631 :::* LISTEN when you enter this: netstat -lnt on the command line? try this: sudo service cups start to start the service. If it wont start or throws an error it could be due to a configuration problem with CUPS, not s...

Re: Linux market penetration

More attention from industry is big thing for many use cases for Linux. Software support is still lacking for some very important stuff. This was more of a problem for Mac until their market share got up above 5% - now it seems a fairly rare case for mainstream software to not support it.

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I installed my first Linux box in 94 from a big stack of floppy disks my dad made me for Christmas. I used Linux on and off for for a few years before trying to go "pure" Linux at home and at work... I actually purchased a Suse disk. This lasted for another few years - but I ended up switching to Wi...

On the newer Toshiba it just worked, no issues, I am not sure what the chipset is. The older Dell with the Broadcom required a Broadcom driver install, now it works great.

Re: Been a bad boy today

I tried it in a VirtualBox and it was acting stable-ish, It does look nice and feel smooth, but I had nothing but trouble with Kubuntu before switching to Mint and just can't risk it on my work machine again.

I didn't like the flat theme though, too windows-8 like.

Re: Epson driver for Mint 17

Have you tried the "printer-driver-escpr" from the mint software manager?

Load the software manager and search for Epson and load this package, when you setup your printer you will likely get a choice of both drivers, choose whichever you currently don't have selected and try that.
