How do I return Linux Mint (in my case 21.3 xfce) to sanity and require that reboot/shutdown/poweroff only be allowed for root ?
Currently ant user can do this.
It's not in: `visudo` , I was expecting it to be one of the sudo commands...

Re: Get command names in pix image viewer
Thanks my friend.
Sad it's getting this way, pix is a nice minimal viewer and works well otherwise.
Looks like I'm moving to one of your recommendations.

Get command names in pix image viewer
Hi, I recently upgraded from LM 21.2 to LM 21.3 XFCE. This also upgraded pix image viewer to 3.2.2 . Now I see all the menus have become icons and all the commands are also icons. It's also changed behavior from the old school menus to windows style title bar. How can I return pix to normality and s...

Re: Keyboard and mouse locked to input window
It's the password/key manager of xfce itself.
chrome or other regular programs don't have the power to lock the mouse/keyboard to their windows. There's something else somewhere.

Keyboard and mouse locked to input window
I've noticed that LM 21.1 XFCE is locking the keyboard and mouse input to specific popup windows. Eg - change your keyring password using: passwords and keys -> default keyring -> change password. When the popup window below appears you cannot do anything else apart for type text into the window. Yo...

Thanks Cosmo. Almost there, but a bit of a difference in my case. Analysis below. You command gave: # systemctl status time-sync.target ○ time-sync.target - System Time Synchronized Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/time-sync.target; static) Active: inactive (dead) Docs: man:systemd.special(7) I t...

[PARTIAL SOLVED] LM 21.1 XFCE not changing to winter time
Hi, A couple days ago NZ changed to winter time. My LM 21.1 xfce didn't change to one hour back. Here's my locale: # printenv | grep -i nz LANGUAGE=en_NZ LC_ADDRESS=en_NZ.UTF-8 LC_NAME=en_NZ.UTF-8 LC_MONETARY=en_NZ.UTF-8 LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8 LC_PAPER=en_NZ.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_NZ.UTF-8 LC_TELEPHON...

xfce dimming non active window evolution mail text
On LM 21.1 xfce , when I have the compose message window to write an email in plain text - the text is fine. But when I activate another window (any program) and the compose message is not the active window - the text dims out and turns this barely readablegrey. This only happens with Plain Text mes...

Re: Confirmation dialog unusable in latest LM XFCE
Thanks for the css tips. I'll make a snapshot first , then play with it - in case I break anything.
This is a task for later next week though, meanwhile I'll need to use the mouse.
I also wonder if this would break upgradeability or conflict with whatever fix they eventually make.

Confirmation dialog unusable in latest LM XFCE
I recently replaced (full reinstall) my LM 19.3 xfce with LM 21.1 xfce . The confirmation dialog boxes are barely noticeable in a default LM xfce install (the cancel button is selected but you barely know that by looking): classic_xfce.png And when I changed the appearance to Mint-X-Red , icons to M...

[SOLVED] Reverse mouse scrolling direction (natural scrolling)
Done on LM 21.1 XFCE . How to get back the sensible scrolling direction on your mouse wheel: I found this combination yields the best results (and either of these two settings on their own don't work - you need them both): 1. vim /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf Edit in the line: Option &...

Using vim editor in evolution mail
Hi, I'm trying to configure evolution mail to use vim as its editor (an external editor can be invoked using ctrl-shift-e). The setting (Edit -> Preferences -> Plugins -> External editor -> Configuration) lets you configure a gui app (such as xed) but I can't figure out how to make it use vim. The t...

[SOLVED] disable transmission client notification sounds LM21.1 XFCE ?
Quick answer - it's not coming from XFCE notification tool but transmission client itself: Edit -> Preferences -> Desktop -> Play a sound I'm using the latest and updated LM 21.1 XFCE. I disabled all sounds in : Menu -> Settings -> Appearance -> Settings -> Event Sounds Menu -> Settings -> Pulseaudi...

LM 21.1 xreader spacebar functionality changed
Hi, LM 21.1 XFCE - I noticed that reading PDF with xreader - the spacebar no longer does a page down but only scrolls a couple of lines. How can I return the scrollbar to sanity and have it jump one screen down again? BTW - shift-backspace jumps forward one screen which is counter intuitive but work...

[SOLVED] vim from flathub not easily accessible from the terminal
Using LM 21.1 xfce. Installing vim from flathub (because it is v9 in flathub and v8.x in the repos) - you cannot simply type in vim from the command line expecting it to run. Doing so will make you run this kind of command: flatpak run org.vim.Vim and to open a file: flatpak run org.vim.Vim <filenam...

[SOLVED] filezilla from flathub not writing properly to /tmp/
I had this issue in older LM from 19.x onwards right up to 21.1 xfce.
If you installed filezilla from flathub - if you try downloading files to /tmp/ you will not see them in other apps or from the terminal.
Solution - install filezilla from the repos and your system will behave as expected.

[PARTIALLY SOLVED] Weird characters on remote box vim
Using LM19.3 XFCE : I ssh to a fedora 36 device and editing a file using vim. When I ssh and immediately edit the file - vim initially displays some weird character (?4m) which disappears once I move the cursor and vim is totally usable. It doesn't reappear until I open vim again. This does not occu...

[SOLVED] Display full logs at boot time
By default LM (and most other distros) hide the boot logs and display some graphic instead. Tested on LM 19.3 XFCE. To get your boot logs back do this: sudo vim /etc/default/grub Then use something similar to these settings. Make sure to remove the "quiet splash" args because they hide the...

[SOLVED] Changing the default browser for evolution 3 mail client XFCE LM20
On LM20 XFCE if you want to change the default browser evolution email client uses - doing it via the GUI (settings -> preferred applications -> internet -> web browser) doesn't work and it will default to firefox. The solution is as follows (Do this as your own user in the command line): Verify the...

Re: [WORKAROUND] File browser used by apps missing folders tree
The problem is I need this dialog for opening files for various programs, and not for general file manager use (for general file manager ranger rules the field and NOTHING COMES CLOSE).
Simply typing in seems the easiest and closest solution.
