Re: BSDCan 2018: The Tragedy of systemd

Don't be presumptuous. You're doing the very same thing. Excuse me? BSDCan 2018 is the name of the event, The Tragedy of systemd is the name of the talk. That is what I've use as topic tittle, I do feel it to be click bait, but those are the names that were used. An awesome and informative talk, en...

Re: BSDCan 2018: The Tragedy of systemd

This topic has been done to death, and every once in a while someone comes along and tries to reignite the flames. If you don't like systemd, use a different distro. End of story. This is what I love about Linux Mint community and the reason why I don't interact much here anymore. You clearly have ...

Re: Trojans

Last weekend I bought the book A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux ( 4th edition) by Mark Sobell. A good book for newbees like me, but the price! In the book the author says you can search for Tojans by checking the files with seuid permission. He gives the following code: $ sudo find / -perm...

Today I found this blog post that covers some advanced topic that you should learn after you know the basics.

Re: Why maintainers matter

Gnome makes an interesting piece of software with some great tools for gnome based development called Gnome Builder. It is under heavy development and sees a good number of bugfixes and new/improved features with each new release. Now I can install it in Mint18 from the repos and get version 3.18. ...

Re: Why maintainers matter

While you can manually download and install snappy packages, the centralized server is closed source and owned and controlled entirely by Canonical. That's perhaps the more worry aspect: it sounds awfully like vendor lock-in. Indeed, hopefully there are other options like Flatapk, AppImage but it i...

Re: Why maintainers matter

Afaik there are no performance issues reported so far, the only thing that is required is that distros start working together on this. Look at the Xapps initiative by Clem, now put those in a snap package and now you have an app that is cross Desktop Environment and also cross Distribution. Whats mi...

Re: Why maintainers matter

But the distros install software to different locations, and have different libraries at different locations. Having software that can run on any distro would (usually) require major changes in all the distros to a unified file system and way of calling things. Not to mention the confusion that dif...

Re: Why maintainers matter

Many people experience instances where they need or want a newer version of an application than is available in the repositories, or one that isn't available at all in the repositories. In the real world, a good solution to this is the use of PPAs and for me, Snaps are looking like a better option ...

Re: Why maintainers matter

Debian will fork it anyway due to the Non Free nature of, say, the lower-left corner of the bookmarks icon I understand that point but still I believe there are enough Distribution out there (not only Debian) that would be interested on a dedicated area of "Free Software Only". One benefit of the u...

Re: Why maintainers matter

That is the kind of thing that app packaging and sandboxing in the sense of snaps is designed to combat, and Steam is moreover the kind of application that many quite decidedly want on Linux; closed source or not. My dream scenario is that all distros agree on not packaging Firefox in their native ...

Re: Why maintainers matter

I believe maintainers should learn to make the system to work for them instead of working for the system. I agree with most of what he wrote, the added value of maintainer is invaluable as an extra security layer. But I do believe that he is missing the bigger picture here. What if... What if... all...

Re: Is Linux safe to use on a desktop computer?

Linux is safe to use as a desktop as long as you keep installing security updates. By default mint doesn't do this. Look at the Update Manager section in the release notes of LM18: https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_cinnamon_whatsnew.php https://www.linuxmint.com/pictures/screenshots/sarah/mintupd...

Re: Is Linux safe to use on a desktop computer?

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avira.345492/page-172#post-2594613 What does this link tell us? At first, that somebody says, that he won't use linux on desktop for various reasons. So what? Does he say for security reasons (that is the topic of this thread)? No, he does not. Does he give an...

Re: Please recommend a cheap graphics card for Dell Poweredge T110 II

No that I know, essentially anything that is compatible with Ubuntu, but as you saw your Matrox card is suppose to be compatible but it isn't :? Your best bet is on NVIDIA, that's supported for sure, but you have to be careful because you are using a server machine not a regular PC. You have to look...

I see the problem, I found this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1316035 I believe your time is better spent on purchasing a 3D accelerated supported video card. It is a complex situation that involves a major change in the X (Display server): http://www.phoroni...

Upgrade instructions will be published next month after the stable release of Linux Mint 18. Se podrá actualizar desde 17.3 ; las instr...
